About Whiskey Thief Distilling:

Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. is a craft distillery in Kentucky known for its unique "grain-to-glass" approach and interactive tasting experiences where guests "thieve" bourbon directly from the barrel.

Locations and Atmosphere

The distillery operates two primary locations, each offering a distinct way to experience their spirits:

  • Franklin County Farm Distillery: Located on a 127-acre working farm near Frankfort, this is where all production takes place. It features a relaxed, rural atmosphere with a cocktail bar, a large outdoor patio, and a fire pit. The farm is both pet-friendly and cigar-friendly (outdoors).
  • Louisville Tasting & Listening Room: Situated in the NuLu neighborhood, this urban location provides a similar "thieving" experience along with live music and a curated cocktail menu.

The "Thieving" Experience

Whiskey Thief is the first Kentucky distillery to offer every visitor the chance to sample uncut and unfiltered whiskey straight from the barrel.

  • Interactive Tastings: Guests use a "whiskey thief"—a traditional copper tool—to extract samples from five different barrels.
  • Bottle Your Own: If you find a favorite, you can hand-fill your own bottle directly from that specific barrel to take home.

Products and Spirits

The distillery produces a variety of small-batch spirits using grain grown on their own farm.

  • Bourbons and Whiskeys: They specialize in single-barrel, barrel-strength Kentucky Bourbons, Wheated Bourbons, and Rye Whiskies.
  • Other Offerings: Their lineup also includes Prototype Gins, moonshines, and seasonal releases like the "Donner & Blitzen" limited edition.
  • Exclusive Availability: Their products are primarily sold only at their physical locations and are generally not distributed to outside liquor stores.

History and Ownership

Originally founded in 2012 as Whiskey Thief Distilling Co., the business was known as Three Boys Farm Distillery for several years before returning to its original name in 2022.

  • Leadership: The distillery was sold in 2021 to Walter Zausch, a former architect for high-end retail brands like Apple and Microsoft, who has focused on expanding the visitor experience.
  • Distilling Team: In 2025, the distillery hired veteran distiller Lisa Roper Wicker as Director of Distilling to oversee product strategy.
