Lagavulin 200th Anniversary Double Matured 16 Year Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskey

Lagavulin 200th Anniversary Double Matured 16 Year Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskey

Lagavulin 200th Anniversary Double Matured 16 Year Islay Single Malt Scotch
Whiskey 43%-ABV, 750ml bottle.
About Lagavulin:

Lagavulin is a historic Scottish distillery located on the south coast of the Isle of Islay, positioned between its famous neighbors, Laphroaig and Ardbeg. It is widely considered one of the definitive Islay malts, renowned for an intensely smoky, peaty, and rich flavor profile that often serves as a benchmark for the region.

Key Characteristics & Production

  • Flavor Profile: Typical expressions feature a deep, pungent smoke often compared to a seaside bonfire, coal embers, or Lapsang Souchong tea. This is balanced by notes of dried fruit, brine, and a lingering sweetness.
  • The "Slow" Method: Lagavulin is famous for having one of the slowest distillation processes in Scotland. Its pear-shaped stills are filled high to minimize copper contact, preserving the heavy, smoky phenolic compounds that give the whisky its characteristic weight and depth.
  • Water & Peat: The distillery draws water from the Solum Lochs, which flows through peat bogs on its way to the distillery, contributing to the spirit's unique taste.

Core & Notable Expressions

The distillery maintains a premium core range, often leading with older age statements than its peers.

  • Lagavulin 16 Year Old: The flagship expression and a global icon. It is celebrated for its balance of heavy peat smoke and refined oak influence.
  • Lagavulin 8 Year Old: Originally a limited 200th-anniversary release in 2016, its popularity led to it becoming a permanent part of the core range. It is known for being lighter, more vibrant, and fiercely smoky.
  • Distillers Edition: A double-matured version finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, which adds a rich, syrupy sweetness to the smoky base.
  • Offerman Edition: A collaboration with actor Nick Offerman (famous for his character Ron Swanson’s love of the brand), featuring unique finishes like Guinness stout or Caribbean rum casks.

History & Legacy

  • Origins: While officially founded by John Johnston in 1816, records indicate illicit distilling occurred on the site as early as 1742.
  • The "Malt Mill" Legend: In the early 20th century, distillery owner Sir Peter Mackie famously built a replica distillery (Malt Mill) at Lagavulin in an unsuccessful attempt to copy the style of neighboring Laphroaig.
  • Cultural Status: Lagavulin has earned a cult following in pop culture, most notably as the favorite drink of Ron Swanson in the TV series Parks and Recreation.

Pinhook Bourbon Collaboration Series Double Oak Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Pinhook Bourbon Collaboration Series Double Oak Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Pinhook Bourbon Collaboration Series Double Oak Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
52%-ABV, 750ml bottles.
About Pinhook Bourbon:

Pinhook Bourbon is a Kentucky-based whiskey brand known for its "vintage approach" to blending, inspired by the wine industry. Rather than aiming for a consistent flavor profile year after year, Pinhook crafts unique annual releases that showcase the best qualities of that specific year’s barrels.

The "Pinhooking" Concept

The brand's name and philosophy are rooted in a Kentucky horse racing tradition.

  • Definition: "Pinhooking" is the practice of buying young thoroughbreds, overseeing their development, and selling them once they reach racing maturity.
  • Whiskey Parallel: Pinhook applies this to whiskey by selecting promising young barrels, nurturing them through the aging process, and blending them at their peak.
  • The Labels: Each annual release is dedicated to a promising thoroughbred from Bourbon Lane Stables. The labels feature the horse’s name and statistics, with designs inspired by the bright colors of jockey silks.

Distillation & Production

  • Early Sourcing: From its founding in 2010 until 2017, Pinhook exclusively sourced its whiskey from MGP in Indiana.
  • Castle & Key Distillery: Since 2017, Pinhook has distilled its own proprietary mash bills at the historic Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This site was originally the abandoned Old Taylor Distillery.
  • Master Blender: Blends are developed by co-founder and Master Blender Sean Josephs, a certified sommelier who uses his wine background to guide the vintage-driven process.

Key Whiskey Series

Pinhook offers several distinct lines, often categorized by the color of their hand-dipped wax seals.

Series
Description

Flagship Bourbon
An annual "everyday sipper" release, typically aged around 3 years and bottled at ~100 proof.

High Proof
A limited annual release of select barrels blended for higher complexity and bottled at or near cask strength.

Vertical Series
A multi-year experiment following a single group of barrels as they age. Releases occur annually (e.g., 4-year, 5-year, etc.) to show how time affects the flavor.

Artist Series
Limited bottlings featuring commissioned artwork inspired by the whiskey's specific story.

Typical Flavor Profiles

Because each year is a unique vintage, tasting notes vary. However, common themes include:

  • Core Notes: Vanilla, caramel, and baking spices.
  • Recent Vintages: The 2024 Flagship Bourbon features notes of banana bread, butterscotch, and red apple, while the 2025 vintage showcases tropical fruit, honey, and clove.

Legacy: Home to legendary distillers and known for its dedication to heritage and innovation, producing sought-after bourbons.

40%-ABV, 750ml bottles.
About Ghost Ship Whiskey:

Ghost Ship Whiskey is a line of spirits produced by Cleveland Distillery (not to be confused with Cleveland Whiskey), a craft producer based in Lakewood, Ohio. The brand is known for its distinctive nautical-themed labels and its use of non-traditional aging methods.

Product Varieties

The Ghost Ship line primarily consists of two core expressions:

  • Ghost Ship Corn Whiskey: An unaged or lightly aged spirit featuring a 100% corn grain bill. It is 80 proof (40% ABV) and described as having subtle nuances of spice and caramel corn with a hint of candy corn on the palate.
  • Ghost Ship Aged Whiskey: Also bottled at 80 proof, this version undergoes a maturation process to develop a smoother profile compared to the raw corn whiskey.

The "Marvelous Maple" Edition

Based on your recent interest in Cleveland Distillery's Ghost Ship Marvelous Maple Edition, this specific release is a flavored or finished variant:

  • Flavor Profile: It features a complex blend of warm, rich spices meant to evoke "Autumn's favorite dessert".
  • Specifications: Typically found in 750ml bottles at 40% ABV.
  • Characteristics: It aims for a smooth, sweet palate with aromatic notes of anise and spice.

Production Philosophy

The distillery often utilizes Pressure Aging™ technology, which uses varying pressure to force the spirit in and out of the wood's pores, accelerating the extraction of flavors that would typically take years in a traditional barrel. While this innovation allows for unique wood finishes like sugar maple, some enthusiasts note it can result in a "younger" or "unfinished" taste compared to slow-aged spirits.

Michael Couvreur Overaged Malt Whiskey Matured In Sherry Oak Casks

Michael Couvreur Overaged Malt Whiskey Matured In Sherry Oak Casks
43%-ABV, 700ml bottles.
About Michael Couvreur Whiskey:

Michel Couvreur is a renowned Belgian independent bottler based in Burgundy, France, who pioneered "French-aged" whisky by maturing Scottish distillates in high-quality Sherry casks. Known as a "whisky artist," Couvreur focused on blending and aging in deep, humid caves, producing complex, sherried, and often smoky whiskies that blend Scottish tradition with French refinement.

Key Aspects of Michel Couvreur Whisky:

  • The Process: While based in Burgundy, the whiskies (both malt and grain) are sourced from Scotland, then matured in rare Sherry casks (often Pedro Ximénez) in French caves, a process designed to highlight the interaction between wood and spirit.
  • Legacy: After Michel Couvreur's passing in 2013, the business is continued by his family (wife Alexandra and son-in-law Cyril Deschamps) and his long-time apprentice, Jean-Arnaud.
  • Signature Styles:
    • Overaged Malt Whisky: The flagship, high-end blend (12–27 years old) known for its deep nuttiness and dark walnut color.
    • The Unique: A blend of malted and unmalted barley, offering a lighter, smooth entry-level option.
    • Candid Malt Whisky: A peated expression that balances, smoke with sherry sweetness.
  • Flavor Profile: The whiskies are frequently described as having a "vinous" or Armagnac-like quality, with prominent notes of dried fruits, nuts, and saltiness.

Following his passing, the production continues to be guided by a philosophy that prioritizes the quality of the cask to create a truly "handmade" spirit.

Maker’s Mark Gold Label Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Limited Edition Old Style Sour Mash
50.5%-ABV, 700ml bottles.
About Maker’s Mark:

  • Spelling Legacy: It is one of the few American brands to use the Scottish spelling "whisky" without the "e," a tribute to the Samuels family's Scots-Irish heritage.
  • Sustainability: As a certified B Corp, Maker’s Mark emphasizes regenerative agriculture and maintains its own limestone-filtered water source at Star Hill Farm.

Product Lineup
