American Craft Spirits Association Announces 2019 Heartland Whiskey Competition Winners

American Craft Spirits Association Announces 2019 Heartland Whiskey Competition WinnersCHICAGO, July 16, 2019 The American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) today announced the winners of the 2019 Heartland Whiskey Competition, which was open to craft whiskeys from all 50 states that incorporate corn in their mash bill (the mix of grains used to make whiskey). In this second, biannual blind judging event, whiskeys from 13 "heartland" states also competed for Best of Show and Best of State, and all entries competed in their select whiskey sub-categories.

The competition, which was generously sponsored by state corn marketing associations, took place June 4 at CH Distillery in Chicago, IL. ACSA facilitated the judging process with Board President Chris Montana, owner of Du Nord Distillery, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who served as the Judging Director. Judges were selected by ACSA for their knowledge and experience specific to craft spirits.

Best of Show was captured by Middle West Spirits from Columbus, Ohio, for its OYO Sherry-Finished Bourbon, which also earned the top score in the Bourbon category. Middle West Spirits will be presented their award by the Ohio Corn Marketing Program later this month.

"We are deeply appreciative of the state corn marketing associations for their investment and continued commitment to help craft spirits producers promote and grow their products," stated Margie A.S. Lehrman, CEO of ACSA.

"Several of the craft distilleries are also working farms that use the grain they grow to make their spirits so they are deeply committed to their product," stated Don Duvall, Chairman of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board. "On behalf of all the participating corn associations I want to express our great respect and admiration as well as our continued support. While this is a challenging year for farming, we are pleased to see an important customer group grow and prosper."

Laws Whiskey House Celebrates 6-Year Bottled In Bond Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey On July 28

BREW2715_sm.jpg

What: Laws Whiskey House, Denver’s award-winning grain-to-bottle whiskey distillery, will be releasing their 6-year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon. A 6-year bonded bourbon is a first for the storied whiskey maker; previously, Laws has offered a 4-year Bonded Four Grain Bourbon that at the time was Colorado’s first bonded whiskey.

Bottled in Bond requires that the whiskey be a product of a single season, using the grain of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery, and aged at least four years in a federal government-bonded warehouse. This whiskey is then cut and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). These rules are even more stringent than the U.S. standards for “Straight Whiskey.”

To celebrate this momentous occasion, Laws Whiskey House will have a special release party in their tasting room featuring live music from the Denver Vintage Reggae Society, cocktail classes every half hour, and whiskey and chocolate pairings to boot. Limited edition merchandise will be available including free rocks glassware for the first 100 bottles of 6-Year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon sold.

Food will be available for purchase by Rolling Smoke BBQ who will have special offerings to pair with Laws Whiskey.

When: Sunday, July 28 from 1 - 5 p.m.

Where: Laws Whiskey House Tasting Room (1420 S Acoma St, Denver, CO 80223)

For more information about the Laws Whiskey House 6-Year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey event, contact chea@radcraftbeer.com.

MGP Announces Remus Volstead Reserve, Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon to Mark the 100th Anniversary of Prohibition

MGP Announces Remus Volstead Reserve, Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon to Mark the 100th Anniversary of ProhibitionLAWRENCEBURG, Ind., July 8, 2019  MGP will release Remus Volstead Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a one-time rare, reserve Bourbon, in November 2019. The new release coincides with the 100thanniversary of the start of National Prohibition – under the Volstead Act – that enforced the 18th Amendment outlawing the production and distribution of alcoholic spirits in the U.S. First ratified on January 16, 1919 and enacted one year later, the 18th Amendment ended in 1933, earning historic status as the only constitutional amendment to be entirely repealed.

"Prohibition launched an era of social change which created legends such as George Remus, King of the Bootleggers, and a speakeasy culture that persists to this day," says Andrew Mansinne, Vice President of Brands, MGP Ingredients. "Remus Volstead Reserve is made from our finest 14-year aged reserves and has spent the same time in barrel as this country spent under Prohibition. Like this singular historic era, our Volstead Reserve is one-of-a-kind."

Remus Volstead Reserve is bottled-in-bond from 2005 bourbons crafted at MGP's historic distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and bottled at 100-proof. Remus Volstead Reserve has rich aromas of dried candied fruit, caramelized pecans, oak, char and tobacco. Robust and rich oak flavors dominate the forward palate and body of this bourbon.  Balanced cherry and caramel touches compliment the oak in the body, and intensify in the bourbon's finish.  Pleasant notes of leather and spice round out the finish, and oak and barrel char notes linger until the next sip.

Available as of November 2019, Remus Volstead Reserve Straight Bourbon Whiskey retails for a suggested $199.99 per 750-ml bottle. The packaging is designed for collectors with a high-end glass bottle and commemorative box. This limited, 2005-aged reserve Bourbon will never be repeated. No more than 500 9-liter cases will be available for markets where George Remus Bourbon is currently sold. For more information, please contact Helen Gregory, helen@gregoryvine.com, or Amanda Davis, amanda@gregoryvine.com

Introducing the Limited Edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal

Introducing the Limited Edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury RoyalLONDON, July 8, 2019 - "Shining a light on this hidden treasure of the whisky world is something we've wanted to do for some time. This indulgent new limited edition provides us with a wonderful opportunity to explore the remarkable layers of rich fruit found in every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label," said Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge.

Today, Johnnie Walker announces the release of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal, the third in the series of special releases crafted using irreplaceable "ghost" whiskies from a small number of iconic distilleries that closed many years ago. Jim has long been passionate about exploring the unique flavours found in these exceptionally rare whiskies from the Johnnie Walker Blue Label reserves.

At the heart of this whisky lies the Highland single malt Glenury Royal, from the distillery of the same name that shut its doors in 1985. Its colourful history is as exceptional as its uniquely rich and fruity whiskies.

Founded in 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay - a Member of the British Parliament and the first man to walk one thousand miles in one thousand hours - the distillery was destroyed by a devastating fire only to rise like a phoenix from the flames to thrive once again. Under Barclay's tenacious leadership, it flourished to become one of only three Scottish distilleries to enjoy a royal title. Today the rare spirit of Captain Barclay lives on in the dwindling stocks of this incredible "ghost" whisky.

Jim added: "We have waited patiently for that moment when we turn our thoughts to this exceptionally rare whisky, carefully watching over our maturing casks until the time was right to explore its uniquely indulgent character."

Jim and his team also hand-selected two exceptionally rare whiskies from the "ghost" distilleries of Cambus and Pittyvaich, perfectly balancing their creamy toffee and butterscotch notes with the sumptuous orchard fruits, sweet apple and delicate apricot character of Glenury Royal.

Five other rare whiskies from Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie bring waves of vanilla, heather honey and dried fruits that weave through smooth dark chocolate and nutty layers to create an exploration of this irreplaceable 'ghost' whisky - making this limited edition our most indulgent yet.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal is bottled at an ABV of 43.8% and is available globally from October 2019 with an RRSP of 275 GBP for a 70cl bottle. Each bottle in this special release is individually numbered.

Whiskey In A Can Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Elevate the Whiskey Drinking Experience

LOS ANGELES, July 2, 2019 Whiskey In A Can, the innovative cocktail drinking experience, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring three new flavors to the masses. Without the backing of any major players, Whiskey In A Can, an independent start up, has already made its debut with Highball, a whiskey cocktail infused with lime, ginger, and soda. Whiskey In A Can is continuing to bring their vision to life. Three new flavors hope to be added to the family: New Fashioned (oranges and bitters), Cali Mule (grapefruits and ginger), and Bourbon Lemonade (lemons and lavender).

As a thank you, supporters of the Whiskey In A Can Kickstarter campaign get first access to limited edition merchandise as well as a VIP experience at the launch party in Los Angeles, and even the chance to throw their own Whiskey In A Can party.

"We wanted to take all the guess work out of drinking a whiskey cocktail. We were exhausted of the seltzers in the market and beer bloat, so we created something to be so enjoyable that you'll want more than one anywhere you go," said marketing CEO DJ Lampitt.

The project hopes to raise $25,000 by July 21st to bring their new flavors to a global market.

Explore the Flavors of Scotland With the Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series

Explore the Flavours of Scotland With the Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin SeriesEDINBURGH, Scotland, July 1, 2019  "I've always been fascinated by the distinct favour profiles that distilleries from each of the four corners of Scotland offer, and what they individually add to our whiskies. The Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series gives us the opportunity to take people on a guided tour of the whisky producing regions, with each edition delving deeper into the four signature notes of Johnnie Walker Black Label – sweet vanilla, orchard fruit, rich fruit and smoke."  -  George Harper, Johnnie Walker whisky specialist

Throughout their near 200 years of history, Johnnie Walker have prided themselves on discovering and celebrating the finest malts from all over Scotland. Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series is born out of that sense of exploration, and a thirst to discover the best flavours that Scotland has to offer.

This new collection of four, 12-year-old blended Scotch whiskies include incredible single malts from some of the world's most famous distilleries, and celebrates each of the distinct flavour profiles of the four corners of Scotland.

Each Scotch in the collection is crafted only using whiskies from a particular region to capture the primary flavour characteristics of that area, giving whisky fans the opportunity to discover and explore the wide array of flavours Scotland offers: the fruity flavours of Speyside, the rich characteristics of the Highlands, the sweet notes of the Lowland region and the smoky finish of Islay whiskies.

Three of these limited editions are blended exclusively from some of our finest single malts, and a further edition expertly brings together quality single malt and grain whiskies to best represent the that region's flavour profile.

The whiskies in the series are:

  • Johnnie Walker Black Label Speyside Origin is a light and fruity whisky with hints of cut green apples and orchard fruit. It is made exclusively from quality single malts from the Speyside region of Scotland, with whisky from the distilleries of Cardhu and Glendullan at its heart
  • Johnnie Walker Black Label Highlands Origin has a rich and dark fruitiness, with red berry and stone fruit notes. It is crafted exclusively from single malts from the Highlands, with whisky from Clynelish and Teaninich at its core
  • Johnnie Walker Black Label Islay Origin has a slight spice and is for people want to explore whiskies with a warming maritime smokiness. It is made exclusively from exceptional Islay single malts, including Lagavulin and Caol Ila
  • Johnnie Walker Black Label Lowlands Origin has a sweet, creamy vanilla character and notes of toffee. It is made exclusively from a variety of single malt and grain whiskies from the Lowlands including Glenkinchie and Cameronbridge

In order to help consumers navigate this complex category, the series packaging doubles as a accompanying guide to the whisky, and the region it comes from. Every limited-edition pack is adorned with a map of Scotland. The region that the whisky within originates from (Speyside, Highlands, Islay, or Lowlands) is highlighted, along with interesting facts and trivia relating to that part of the country.

John Williams, Johnnie Walker Global Brand Director said: "The Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series has been crafted to help people to discover and explore the distinct flavours profiles of the four corners of Scotland. At Johnnie Walker, we have access to an unparalleled range of fantastic single malts and this collection will be of particular interest to anybody who wants a greater understanding of how our small team of expert whisky-makers craft and balance those distinct flavour profiles to make Johnnie Walker Black Label."

The Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Series is available globally from July in selected Travel Retail stores with an RRP of £35 / $46 USD / €40 EUR / $63 AUD / JPY 5000 for a 1L bottle.

The hard work, dedication and patience have finally paid off and we are humbly excited to see our product join the ranks of the many great Kentuckybourbons."

After beginning barreling in March of 2015, the Taylor family has been patiently crafting one barrel at a time making fine rye and bourbon. Corky Taylor, fourth generation and CEO, has been breathing life back into his great-grandfather's legacy that originally started in 1889. Over 10 decades have passed since Peerless Bourbon had been sold and the Peerless four-year-old product was the first Peerless Bourbon available without a prescription since Prohibition.

Standing true to what the first generation once started, the Taylor family has taken no shortcuts in making a quality product surpassed by none. With the exclusive use of sweet mash instead of sour, non-chilled filtration, barreling product at 107 proof and bottling it as a barrel-strength whiskey, Peerless has carefully crafted an independent path that is here to stay.

Peerless Bourbon can be found at select retailers in Kentucky. The distillery is open to the public on Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Thursdays and Fridays until 7 p.m.). Peerless Rye Whiskey is currently available at the distillery for tastings and purchase.

About Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co.

The Peerless family's very first bourbon went into a barrel in 1889. They have since revived the craft in their own state-of-the-art distillery in the Bourbon District, where they use the finest ingredients. The Peerless family believes that patience builds character and fine bourbon and rye can never be rushed. All under one roof, the select Kentucky Peerless grains are milled, cooked, fermented, double-distilled and barreled as bourbon and rye.
