In the brand's first major marketing push since joining DIAGEO in 2022, the award-winning Texas distillery highlights its unique whisky-making approach in new campaign

WACO, Texas, April 15, 2024  Today Balcones Distilling unveils its new campaign, titled "Whisky from a New Perspective", inspired by the distillery team's artistic and fresh approach to whisky-making.

Based in Waco, Texas, the Balcones distillery is forged on a fault line where two opposing land masses meet, fueling an energy and creative heat that drives a continuous journey of experimentation and innovation for Balcones.

While their previous Mirador releases showcase Golden Promise Malted Barley matured in refill casks, Mirador Eclipse delves deeper into the realm of flavor experimentation, inspired by how eclipses do more than just obscure and darken – they throw familiar things into a new and changed light, allowing new facets and emphases to the experience of the moment. By introducing two strains of yeast - a red wine and a rosé yeast - alongside the house malt whisky yeast, Balcones' artisans have unlocked a symphony of soft, blush red berry, and fruits-of-the-forest notes rarely seen in single malts.

"Cataleja Texas Single Malt is one of the most complex and unique whiskies we've made. Made with 100% Golden Promise Malted Barley, this single malt began its maturation journey in barrels previously used to age Kentucky bourbon, and after three years of the Texas climate's concentrating effects, was transferred into decommissioned Sherry Solera casks that were meticulously hand-selected from various Spanish bodegas (wine cellars): Moscatel, Amontillado Dulce, Oloroso and Palo Cortado. Because the first fill showcased the wonderfully high impact of the 80+ year old casks, the whisky was transferred back into neutral barrels and then followed with two additional rounds of refill single malts through the decommissioned casks, as they continued to provide sherry impact alongside the delicate malt character.

Balcones Distilling and Spoetzl Brewery, Collaborate on Limited-Edition Texas Bock Whisky Release

Balcones Distilling announced today its newest special release, Balcones Texas Bock whisky, made in partnership with Spoetzl Brewery, the creator of Shiner Beer. Derived from Shiner traditions and distilled by Balcones, the Texas Bock is a malt whisky made from the exact recipe for Shiner Bock beer, utilizing the brewery’s mash bill and proprietary lager yeast strain to create a remarkable flavor profile.

The Balcones Texas Bock whisky marks the third collaboration between the two prestigious Texas brands, following the Barrel-Aged Bock craft beer released by Shiner in March of this year and the Barrel-Aged Spoetzl Märzen released in 2018. The new limited-edition expression is a straight malt whisky that was aged in first-fill American oak barrels for at least two years and made with a mash bill of over 51 percent malted barley.

"We are always excited about exploring the methods and processes that produce unique and complex flavors, so we were thrilled to collaborate with the Spoetzl Brewery team to create this new whisky," said Jared Himstedt, head distiller at Balcones Distilling. “It is always inspiring to partner with folks who are committed to quality, craftsmanship, and flavor.”

Texas Bock starts with a bright nose full of pear puff pastry, cinnamon icing, walnut praline, and orange peel. On the palate, the whisky is juicy with notes of buckwheat sourdough pancakes, Shirley Temple, maple streusel, strawberry pop rocks, and seasoned oak. It finishes with holiday spices and hints of raspberry cobbler, dried rosemary, and soft suede.
