The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Questlove Announce Quest for Craft: Season One

Michael Che, Jimmy Jam, Patti Smith and Malcolm Gladwell Join Questlove in Season One of Quest for Craft; Announcement marked with a ground-breaking Scholarship Program from The Balvenie, Questlove, and The University of the Arts in Philadelphia

Quest for Craft: Season One Debuts October 28th on YouTube

NEW YORK, Sept. 30, 2021 - The Balvenie has been perfecting the craft of whisky making for nearly 130 years and, throughout that period, has remained fascinated by the creative processes, often-obsessive human attributes and deep intrinsic values that elevate something from great to exceptional. On October 28, that journey embarks on a new frontier with the arrival of Quest for Craft: Season One: a disquisitive new digital series exploring the convergence of craft and creativity, hosted by bestselling author, cultural icon and scholar of creativity Questlove. Watch the series trailer HERE.

Quest for Craft explores modern creativity between the lines through compelling creators that pour their hearts into what they do. The series, filmed in the iconic Electric Lady Studios, centers around four of the most creative minds, legendary GRAMMY Award winning music producer Jimmy Jam, SNL comedian Michael Che, punk-rock icon Patti Smith, and prolific author Malcolm Gladwell, as Questlove opens conversational passageways to their creative processes, inspirations and aspirations over four compelling episodes.

Quest for Craft is the hallmark collaboration of a multi-year partnership between The Balvenie and Questlove and an extension of The Balvenie's global campaign The Makers Project, in which the brand brings to life not just the skill but the heart of makers around the world via content series, exhibits, auctions, and experiential events. The partnership began in late 2020 and intends to unpack the uniquely human elements that elevate the great to the exceptional.

"I share a synergistic passion with The Balvenie on the importance of inspiration, passion and dedication to creativity and the making process. Our partnership is founded on an exploration into creative minds that invest their time, focus, and soul and into creating something singular and distinctive," said Questlove. "Quest for Craft is about the pursuit of ultimate craftsmanship. In each episode, I dive deep into conversation with creatives who I have admired for their unique perspective, process, and productivity."

In its opening season, Quest for Craft ventures to take the viewer on an expedition of discovery into ultimate craftsmanship by analyzing creativity in the realm of chaos, practice, community and time with the guests:

  • Episode 1, Craft and Chaos with Michael Che - Questlove and Michael Che chat about how to infuse purposeful levels of chaos into their careers, how it can push you to a new level of creativity and how it can be a key factor in honing your craft.
  • Episode 2, Craft and Community with Jimmy Jam - Questlove and Jimmy Jam connect on meeting their core creative partners at a young age, and chat about how instrumental their creative communities have been in helping them become the artists they are today.
  • Episode 3, Craft and Time with Patti Smith - Questlove and Patti Smith delve into the topic of time as Patti reflects upon her time with Electric Lady Studios, from attending the opening party to going on to record many of her albums at the legendary studio.
  • Episode 4, Craft and Practice with Malcolm Gladwell - Questlove and Malcolm Gladwell cover the topic of practice and Malcolm shares the true meaning of his 10,000 hours theory, how it's been misunderstood in the past and how getting better at your craft can involve going beyond your mastery to take on new challenges.

As Quest for Craft unpacks new creative realms through each episode, The Balvenie and Questlove are supporting emerging creative pursuits with an opportunity for an aspiring maker to begin their own quest through a pioneering scholarship program with the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. The scholarship program will give one aspiring creative mind, from anywhere in the United States, the opportunity to undertake the university's 'first-of-its-kind' PhD in Creativity.

"The PhD in Creativity program was created to remove the constraints that many higher education programs have, and allow students to fully embrace new ideas and innovation in ways they may not normally have in other fields," said Dr. Jonathan Fineberg, PhD in Creativity Program Director. "Questlove and The Balvenie share the PhD program's core ethos that reimagines how we think about craft, in its many forms, and we're thrilled to be giving a student an opportunity to explore their own creative journey with this scholarship."

The Balvenie Fellow in the PhD in Creativity will be fully-funded in the three-year program that begins in June of 2022. Apart from the intensive two week summer immersion and a return visit for a long weekend in the winter of the first year, all course work will be completed via remote learning. The winning candidate will be selected by Questlove, in partnership with The Balvenie and the University of the Arts. The scholarship program is open to anyone over the age of 21 from now through November 15th, 2021. Visit https://www.uarts.edu/academics/phd-program for more details.

Quest for Craft and The University of the Arts scholarship program marks an exciting commencement of a long-term mission for The Balvenie and Questlove to expand and showcase the beautiful convergence of craft and creativity. The first four episodes of Quest for Craft will be released throughout the fall, starting on October 28. To be notified about the launch of the series, subscribe to The Balvenie YouTube.

"The Balvenie is unique in our craft as one of the last distilleries in Scotland committed to old-school yet innovative methods, and it's the human characteristics and intrinsic values that drive our craftspeople every day to create the most exceptional Scotch whisky. It's what drove Malt Master David Stewart to first create the craft of cask finishing, and it's this commitment to tradition that is the true driving force behind the innovation, creativity and consistency of craft that continues to come from our distillery." said Greg Levine, Brand Director, The Balvenie USA. "The union between The Balvenie and Questlove is founded upon this shared passion of the creative process - be that in whisky, music, food, literature or other fields. Alongside Questlove, we intend to use our platform to champion what it means to be committed to the never-ending pursuit of craft."

4 Hands Brewing Co. Announces New Aged Spirit Brand: Withered Oak

Withered Oak is the second brand from the St. Louis-based beverage company following the botanically-driven 1220 Artisan Spirits

Photos by Heidi Drexel Photography

ST. LOUIS, MO (September 30, 2021) - 4 Hands Brewing Co., the St. Louis-based beverage company, announces today a new spirits brand with Withered Oak, a new innovative line of aged spirits. The Withered Oak brand has been thoughtfully crafted and curated by the team at 4 Hands Brewing Company and 1220 Artisan Spirits over the last four years. Withered Oak will launch with two exclusive, single barrel aged spirits: a 5-year straight bourbon whiskey and a 5-year rye whiskey. The brand will also feature a 4-year blended rye whiskey, aged in unique finishing barrels to add depth and flavor, to launch this winter.

A limited allotment of Withered Oak Straight Bourbon and Rye bottles will be available for purchase at 4 Hands Brewing Co. (1220 S. 8th St.) on Friday, October 8th starting at 4 p.m. 1220 Spirits and Withered Oak will take over the first floor of 4 Hands Brewing Co., and STL Barkeep will feature specialty Withered Oak and 1220 cocktails for guests to experience. The Withered Oak Straight Bourbon and Rye bottles will only be available for purchase at 4 Hands Brewing Co. and not available in off-premise retailers. Select on-premise establishments will feature Withered Oak in a series of “Whiskey Wednesday” events (see more below). A 4-year blended rye whiskey will also launch this winter with a larger distribution footprint.

Withered Oak is the outcome of a creative partnership with MGP Ingredients, Inc., a leading producer of premium distilled and branded spirits. 4 Hands Brewing Co. and 1220 Spirits Founder and Owner Kevin Lemp sought out Sam Schmeltzer, one of MGP’s master blenders with nearly a decade of experience documenting, tasting and categorizing the world's best whiskeys, to identify the perfect profiles for Withered Oak. The careful consideration of whiskey barrel selections resulted in not only a unique blended rye, but the single barrel offerings.

Kevin Lemp explains, “Our initial intention with Withered Oak was to identify an interesting selection of barrels for a 4-year blended rye whiskey. While working through the barrel inventory, we identified select barrels that were really special and warranted a single barrel release. It was somewhat of a happy accident, but we’re thrilled with the end product of not only our blended rye, but our bonus 5-year bourbon and 5-year rye whiskey.”

In regards to the partnership with the Withered Oak team, Sam Schmeltzer states, “Kevin came to me with an exciting proposition - free creative reign to select my favorite barrels among our vast selection. He said ‘I want you to do something that hasn’t been done before.’ That freedom allowed us to tap into some barrel selections to offer something totally different. It was a true collaborative process to dial in the flavor profiles.”

Kevin Lemp further states, “We wanted to choose from the finest catalogue of whiskey in the world and build a brand with integrity around it. MGP is the best partner for that,” says Lemp. “I like to trust talented people to express themselves. You can’t be in this business if you don’t value that. With the quality of the liquid in the barrels to start, combined with our team’s time and passion to finesse the finished product, we are thrilled to launch a sophisticated product like Withered Oak in the aged spirits space.”

Staying true to the Withered Oak team’s reverence for high quality craft products, the inaugural 5-year cask strength bourbon and rye whiskeys will be released in very limited quantities. Each bottle has been individually filled and hand-stamped straight from the barrel at 118 proof. Aged for five years and meant to be sipped neat, Withered Oak’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey has notes of cinnamon, heavy caramel, and vanilla, with hints of oak. Withered Oak’s 5-year Rye Whiskey has notes of cinnamon, subtle hints of mint, clove, spice, and butterscotch, with a long mouthfeel finish.

“This is just the beginning,” says Head Distiller Andy Burgio. “Sam helped us identify a blend of rye and light whiskey for our blended rye that he’s never put together for anyone before. It’s a phenomenal product to begin with, but we have plans to put our own creative spin on the base spirit with unique finishing barrels.”

Whiskey lovers can sample the Withered Oak Straight Bourbon and Rye at a special tasting event series, “Whiskey Wednesdays,” at exclusive partner restaurants and cocktail bars across St. Louis. Starting Wednesday, October 13 through December 20, St. Louisans can sample Withered Oak with featured cocktails created by the bar team at Brennan’s (October 13), Juniper and Scottish Arms (October 27), Whiskey Ring (November 10), Platypus (December 1), and more. The first official Whiskey Wednesday kicks off Wednesday, October 13 at Brennan’s in the Central West End, where a special Withered Oak and Brennan’s collaboration cigar will also be available alongside the single barrel whiskeys.

From Bourbon Barrels to Boots: Wolverine and Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery Showcase American Craftsmanship With A Second Batch of Limited Edition Boots

From Bourbon Barrels to Boots: Wolverine and Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery Showcase American Craftsmanship With A Second Batch of Limited Edition Boots

The brands come back together with a rugged, timeless design that features a wood heel handcrafted from the bourbon barrels that held this year's release of the Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year bourbon

ROCKFORD, Mich., Sept. 28, 2021 - For a second year Wolverine and Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery have come together to showcase true American craftsmanship with a new limited-edition Wolverine 1000 Mile boot, available today for pre-order. Once again, 100% of the revenue from the sale of these boots will go to the mikeroweWORKS Foundation Work Ethic Scholarship Program to help support the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

Following a successful first collaboration, the Batch 2 Wolverine x Old Rip Van Winkle 1000 Mile boot honors both companies' commitments to creating the finest quality products through American workers. The new boot has a distinct look to distinguish from last year's batch, perfect for collectors looking to celebrate boots and bourbon still created largely the same way they were more than a century ago.

"This collaboration celebrates and supports the hard-working people behind our products," said Devon Vanoostveen, brand representative for Wolverine. "These rugged boots and fine bourbons would not be possible without the skills and dedication of so many blue-collar workers; farmers, coopers, carpenters, distillery workers, truck drivers, and shoemakers, to name a few."

Batch 2 of the Wolverine x Old Rip Van Winkle collaboration draws inspiration from the barrels that house the legendary Old Rip Van Winkle bourbons for 10 to 23 years. Made in the USA, this year's boot features a classic moc toe design and is made with Horween Whiskey Predator leather – a rugged leather meant to stand the test of time that only gets better with age. The heels are handcrafted from the wood of the bourbon barrels that held this year's release of Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year bourbon. The boots are finished with a hand-numbered, textile tongue tag that reflects the individual craftsmanship put into each pair.

"We're thrilled to once again partner with Wolverine, a company that puts as much passion and care into creating their boots as we do our bourbon," said Preston Van Winkle, fourth generation business owner of Old Rip Van Winkle. "Together, we're able to honor our shared commitment to craft while also supporting America's future workforce, inspiring a new generation to take pride in working with their hands."

Batch 2 of the Wolverine x Old Rip Van Winkle limited edition boots are available for pre-order now, ahead of the release date of October 14, 2021. They can be purchased for $400 at wolverine.com/oldrip.

Diageo opens its first carbon neutral whiskey distillery in North America

Diageo opens its first carbon neutral whiskey distillery in North America

One of the largest of its kind in North America, the new distillery in Kentucky will operate using 100% renewable electricity, zero fossil fuels for production and virtual metering technology

The new site reflects Diageo’s ongoing commitment to use 100% renewable energy and become net-zero carbon across direct operations by 2030

LEBANON, KY. – Global beverage leader Diageo has opened its first carbon neutral distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky.  The site will support the local community with 30 full-time jobs while also sourcing 100% non-GMO corn locally. The 72,000 square-foot facility has the capacity to produce up to 10 million proof gallons per year and has begun distilling Bulleit Bourbon using electrode boilers that are powered by 100% renewable electricity throughout the cooking, distillation, and dry house processes. Bulleit is the first and lead brand being produced at the Diageo Lebanon Distillery –and supplements existing production at the nearby Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the distillery is built to ensure that fossil fuels are not used during production.  By partnering with Inter-County Energy and East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC), Diageo is sourcing a mix of wind and solar energy to power the electrode boilers, onsite electric vehicles, internal and external lighting and equipment making the facility one of the largest of its kind in North America. The site has implemented virtual metering technology to advance visibility of water, electricity, and steam usage, collecting key data that is used to drive the company’s resource efficiency and sustainability. These technologies will allow the Diageo Lebanon Distillery to avoid approximately more than 117,000 metric tons[1] of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of taking more than 25,000 cars off the road for a year[2].

“Two years ago, we set a vision and commitment to build our first carbon neutral distillery in North America. Now that the Diageo Lebanon Distillery is operational, I’m incredibly proud of the innovative actions from our teams and partners to fully electrify the facilities and power them with renewable electricity. This is a significant step in our journey to create a low carbon future and be part of the solution to tackle the ongoing climate crisis,” said Perry Jones, President, North America Supply for Diageo.

In addition to the sustainability features of the new facility, Diageo implemented an optimized staffing model consisting of Bourbon Production Experts (BPE’s) responsible for all aspects of distillery, dry house, and operations. By rotating the BPE’s through each operational area to ensure depth of knowledge and flexibility, Diageo aims to accelerate the development of future leaders, ensuring a focus on gender equity and diversity to help shape the industry.

“At Bulleit, we believe we have a responsibility to our environment, our communities, and our planet. We are proud to initiate the production of Bulleit Bourbon at the carbon neutral Lebanon Distillery, as we take a significant step forward in the brand’s long-lasting commitment to sustainability,” said Sophie Kelly, SVP Whiskies, Diageo NA.

Bulleit brand’s continued commitment to sustainability

  • Bulleit has a long-standing commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint at the existing distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky, which was honored with the award of Highly Commended for Sustainable Distillery of the Year at Whisky Magazine’s 2020 Icons of Whisky American Awards.

  • In 2021, the brand committed an annual $25,000 grant to support Kentucky State University students in the Master of Agriculture Sciences in Environmental Studies program for the next five years, helping build a pipeline of diverse talent into the spirits industry by supporting the sustainability leaders of tomorrow.

  • Bulleit recently partnered with American Forests to plant one million trees by 2025, providing a variety of environmental benefits including carbon sequestration, air purification, water conservation, and providing vital wildlife habitat.

  • The Bulleit Distilling Co. production is a zero waste to landfill site.

  • The Bulleit Visitor Experience includes a partnership with the non-profit Oceanic Global to ensure its tasting experience and cocktail bar aligns with The Oceanic Standard (TOS), a certification for venues that have adopted sustainable operating practices and are committed to eliminating single-use plastics.

Diageo’s plan to building a low carbon future

  • Combating climate change and its associated impacts is at the heart of Diageo’s ‘Society 2030: Spirit of Progress’ action plan. The company has already halved the carbon emissions associated with its operations since 2008 and is now working to reach net-zero carbon across its direct operations by 2030, harnessing 100% renewable energy. As part of its action plan, Diageo is developing site-by-site roadmaps and is also working to achieve net-zero carbon across the entire supply chain by 2050 or sooner, with an interim milestone to achieve a 50% reduction by 2030.

  • Building on a long track-record of environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress globally, Diageo is now in the top 1000 companies in the world taking action to address climate change in a science-led and systemic way. The company’s goals in this space have been calculated in accordance with the principles of Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and recently validated as meeting the criteria for the 1.5oC pathway.

  • Diageo is part of a pioneering group of organizations that are championing a green recovery and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, through membership of the United Nations Global Compact, We Mean Business Coalition and other key global advocacy organizations. As a signatory to RE100, Diageo aims to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. In addition, Diageo has signed onto the global Race to Zero campaign, a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier. In North America, the company joined the Renewable Thermal Collaborative to share best practices and work together to scale up renewable thermal energy.

Note to editors:

Carbon neutrality of Diageo’s new Lebanon, Kentucky distillery for all Scope 1 and 2 emissions from site operations will be achieved by Diageo in accordance with PAS 2060 for the period commencing with the first grain delivery to completion of distilling operations, certified by Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. View the PAS 2060 Qualifying Explanatory Statement. Through sourcing for renewable electricity and the electrification of operations, the site will only require residual amounts of carbon offsets to be purchased, associated with operational elements such as emergency back-up power.

The House Of Suntory Whisky Proudly Introduces Yamazaki® 55 Years Old™

The House Of Suntory Whisky Proudly Introduces Yamazaki® 55 Years Old™

CHICAGO, Sept. 9, 2021  In the much anticipated first-ever global release of the Yamazaki® 55, the House of Suntory pays tribute to the passage of time and the legacy of the founding family of Japanese whisky. Bottled in 2020, Yamazaki 55 – the House of Suntory's oldest release in its history – celebrates the Japanese "Showa" era of the 1960s that represented a major period of change for the House of Suntory.

Extremely limited quantities of Yamazaki 55, of which 100 bottles were initially released in Japan in 2020, will reach select global markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Mainland China and Taiwan later this month.

To honor its ongoing commitment to give back to society, Beam Suntory, will donate $5,000 USD for every bottle released in this year's 100-bottle collection, totaling $500,000 USD, to The White Oak Initiative, a group committed to the long-term sustainability of America's white oak forests.

Yamazaki 55 is a blend of precious single malts featuring components distilled in 1960 under the supervision of Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii and then aged in Mizunara casks; and in 1964 under Suntory's Second Master Blender Keizo Saji and then aged in White Oak casks. Suntory's Fifth-Generation Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo worked closely with Third-Generation Master Blender Shingo Torii in deploying their signature art of blending to properly reveal the exceptional depth, complexity and wisdom that is Yamazaki 55. The resulting expression features a deep amber color; robust aroma redolent of sandal wood and well-ripened fruit; sweet, slightly bitter and woody palate; and slightly bitter yet sweet and rich finish.

"Throughout the process of blending Yamazaki 55, I used as inspiration the passage of time and 'Wabi-sabi' – the Japanese belief that imperfections can help to ultimately contribute to perfection," said Fukuyo. "While I often view other extra aged whiskies as art, I consider Yamazaki 55 to be more like a Buddhist statue: calm and mysterious, requiring time to truly enjoy the inner beauty."

Yamazaki 55 is presented in a crystal bottle with the word "Yamazaki" carefully engraved in calligraphy using the technique of sandblasting and featuring real gold dust and lacquer on the age marking. The bottle's opening is wrapped in handmade Echizen washi paper and bound with a Kyo-kumihimo plaited cord, a traditional craft from Kyoto. Each bottle is delivered in a bespoke box made from native Japanese Mizunara wood and coated with Suruga lacquer.

Tasting Notes – Yamazaki 55, 46% ABV

Color:  Deep amber distinctive of Mizunara casks.
Nose:   A robust aroma redolent of sandal wood. A sweet, mature bouquet like well-ripened fruit.
Palate: A soft, smooth first sip that blossoms in the mouth with flavor. A mixture of sweet and slightly bitter, followed by a woody note from the Mizunara cask.
Finish: Slightly bitter, a fragrance like scented wood and a hint of smokiness. A sweet, rich, lingering finish.

Yamazaki 55 will be available in extremely limited quantities starting this month at a suggested retail price of $60,000 USD. This limited-edition expression joins Yamazaki's portfolio of award-winning whiskies including Yamazaki® 12, Yamazaki 18® and Yamazaki 25®.

From Yamazaki. Birthplace of Japanese whisky.

The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery, built starting in 1923 by Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii. Yamazaki is not only the soul place of Suntory Whisky. It is the birthplace of Japanese Whisky.

Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, it is said that Torii selected the land of Yamazaki at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, for its high-quality water source and natural environment, both of which are ideal for whisky making. Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, the area around Yamazaki Distillery has been long referred to as "Minaseno" famous for its exquisite natural water, even mentioned in the Man'yoshu, the ancient anthology of Japanese poetry. Home to Sen no Rikyu, Master of "The Way of Tea" and his renowned "Rikyu no Mizu" (water of the imperial villa), the waters of Yamazaki are selected by the Ministry of Environment as one of Japan's one hundred best natural mineral waters.

Yamazaki lies in a misty valley between Mt.Tennozan and Mt. Otokoyama, where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge. Blessed with Japan's rich four seasons, the diversity of this region's temperature and humidity align to create the perfect conditions for the making of whisky.

ABOUT SUNTORY WHISKY

Since 1923, Suntory has been renowned as the pioneer of Japanese whisky for its House of Master Blenders and for their Art of Blending. Shinjiro Torii built Japan's first malt whisky distillery in Yamazaki, and the Suntory legacy continued with Torii's son, Keizo Saji, Suntory's second master blender who continued to establish distilleries including the Hakushu distillery. As the generations of Suntory's master blenders carry on, Suntory Whisky remains committed to heritage and innovation. The House of Suntory Whisky has been named four-time Distiller of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge in London, UK (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014).

The portfolio includes two single malt whiskies:  Yamazaki—Japan's N°1 Single Malt, multi-layered and profound, Hakushu—verdant, fresh, and delicately smoky; and two blends: the noble blend, Hibiki—Japan's most highly awarded blended whisky and Suntory Whisky Toki.

Crown Royal Kicks Off Groundbreaking Whisky Sponsorship of the NFL by Giving Back to the Champions of Game Day w/ DeMarcus Ware + Riley Green

Crown Royal Kicks Off Groundbreaking Whisky Sponsorship of the NFL by Giving Back to the Champions of Game Day w/ DeMarcus Ware + Riley Green

NEW YORK, September 9, 2021 – As football fans everywhere gear up for the start of football season later this evening, Crown Royal, as the first-ever whisky sponsor of the National Football League (NFL), announced plans to turn game day into a giving day through its ‘Kick Off with Crown Royal’ program. Building on Diageo’s league sponsorship deal, the brand will extend its ongoing generosity efforts to all those who show up for us each game day, including those in the hospitality industry and members of the military.

Crown Royal has had a rich legacy in pro football. In 2017 it became the first spirits brand to advertise during a televised NFL game. Most recently, the brand launched its largest-ever responsible drinking campaign, The Crown Royal Water Break, that encourages drinking in moderation on game day. The stage is set for this natural evolution in the partnership between two beloved North American brand icons with a shared goal of recognizing all those who make game day special.

“The NFL has a proven track record in uniting fans through their efforts supporting local communities, which ties perfectly into our mission to give back and inspire generosity,” said Sophie Kelly, SVP of Whiskies, Diageo North America. “While on game day fans proudly celebrate those on the field, we believe the communities who make game day what it is off the field deserve equal recognition. We’re thrilled to be the first official whisky sponsor of the NFL, and to utilize our partnership to support the people and places who make game day great.”

To kick off the start of the NFL regular season, Crown Royal hosted a special Industry Night of Service last night for hospitality and stadium workers at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium. Special guests including former Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware and country music star Riley Green also attended to help announce the brand’s $50,000 donation to longtime Crown Royal partner, the Southern Smoke Foundation, an organization that financially supports individuals in the food and beverage industry in need. The initial donation is part of a Crown Royal year-long commitment, including ‘Kick Off With Crown Royal,’ to donate $1 million dollars via the Crown Royal Generosity Fund, a donor advised fund, to national and local charities.

“Our mission at Southern Smoke is to provide support and assistance for those in the food and beverage community and their suppliers,” says Kathryn Lott, Executive Director of Southern Smoke. “Crown Royal has a long-standing spirit of generosity and commitment to supporting the hospitality industry, and their support will assist not only individuals in Texas, but across the country.”

“The NFL is excited to officially welcome Crown Royal as the first-ever official whisky sponsor of the NFL,” says Tracie Rodburg, Senior Vice President of Sponsorship Management at the NFL. “We’re looking forward to supporting Crown Royal as they work to make this football season the most generous one yet by giving back to local communities, hospitality workers and military heroes all season long.”

The brand’s generosity efforts will extend throughout the NFL season with future Nights of Service benefitting hospitality and stadium workers being planned. These efforts will extend to another group whose generosity continues to go unmatched, military veterans, who Crown Royal has supported for over a decade through The Purple Bag Project.

This past June, Crown Royal parent company Diageo announced it was entering into a multiyear sponsorship with the NFL as its first ever Official Spirits Sponsor. As part of today’s announcement, Crown Royal becomes one of the first brands within the global beverage leader’s portfolio to activate against this partnership.

Crown Royal invites you to raise a glass to all those who help us cheer on our favorite teams throughout the season, and please drink responsibly.

The Glen Grant® Announces the Release of The Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition Aged 60 Years

The Glen Grant® Announces the Release of The Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition Aged 60 Years

ROTHES, Scotland, Sept. 8, 2021 -- The Glen Grant Distillery® has announced an exclusive, limited edition 60 year old single malt scotch whisky in celebration of the storied six-decades long career of The Glen Grant's own Dennis Malcolm, known as one of Scotland's longest serving distillers. To be released in October of this year, the limited offering is bottled from a single ex-Oloroso sherry cask (#5040) that was filled on October 24th 1960 - the oldest, to date, distillery bottling in the brand's 181 year history, with just 360 Decanters of the liquid available worldwide.

An extremely rare and precious liquid, The Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition, is a luxurious spirit, displaying an elegance that can only be achieved with time, and dedication. Harnessing The Glen Grant's long, rich history and expertise of Dennis Malcolm, this expression marks an exciting new chapter for The Glen Grant, showcasing the incredible six decade career of the Master Distiller on the world's stage.

Each marked with a bespoke number, every one of the 360 decanters have been made from hand-blown crystal glass, designed by world renowned Glencairn Studio, and are based on the design of the distillery's unique tall slender pot stills. Nestled in an elegant presentation case crafted from sustainable walnut, the decanter itself requires over 15 hours of expert craftsmanship for each creation, encompassing intricate details which symbolize the unique aromas of The Glen Grant. Each presentation case has the Master Distiller's signature engraved within it and includes a Certificate of Authenticity, signed personally by Dennis Malcolm.

The Glen Grant Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition, Aged 60 Years is bottled at 52.8% ABV and is non-chill filtered to retain optimal flavour and aroma. With a deep chestnut colour, the aroma starts with notes of vibrant Seville orange that give way to an unravelling of rich fruits and nuts; apricot, peaches, raisons, pecan nuts, and a hint of cigar smoke. Rich and fruity in taste with a beautiful balance of dark chocolate layered with treacle toffee, the taste has elements of a liquid fruit cake, finished with long, lingering flavours of figs, dates, liquorice, and a slight hint of smoke.

Born at The Glen Grant distillery in 1946, few in the worldwide spirits industry share the whisky-industry lineage of Dennis Malcolm. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him, he got his start at age 15 as apprentice cooper and later, as a manager supervising the growing company's nine distilleries. In his current role as Master Distiller, Dennis has been an integral part of the brand and part of its history, maintaining the malt's distinctive character, all the while innovating and growing the range of award-winning expressions, including the newly introduced Arboralis and core expressions aged 10, 12, 15, and 18 Years. Reflecting on his diamond anniversary, Malcom remarks, "It's never been a job to me, it's been a way of life. I don't like my actual birthday -that makes me a year older. But I like my milestones with Glen Grant because it's a year longer than I'm here. I can keep doing what I was destined to do. "

Malcolm's careful craftsmanship and attention to detail in crafting The Glen Grant's single malt scotch whiskies has received worldwide acclaim, including recognition for his service by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2016, when he was named as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Dennis was inducted into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame in 2014 and in 2015, he received the first-ever Spirit of Speyside award for his achievements in the industry. Dennis also went on to receive the Whisky Advocate Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and was honored with the International Wine and Spirits Competition's Outstanding Achievement in the Scotch Whisky Industry Award the same year.

"With the launch of The Glen Grant® Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition, we celebrate and pay tribute to the career of a true Scottish gentleman and globally recognized Scotch Whisky craftsman. Dennis has not only created some of the most-awarded single malts in the world, but also serves as an unwavering champion for the industry. His unrelenting passion for consistent quality in everything he creates is revered on the world's stage by connoisseurs, collectors and aficionados. Dennis even hand-bottled these decanters!" remarks Bob Kunze-Concewitz, Campari Group CEO. "We are honored to work beside such a legend.  This refined, remarkable liquid is a luxurious homage to a life spent doing what he loves most."

The Glen Grant Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition Aged 60 Years is priced at € 25,000.00 and will be available in select retailers in global markets beginning in October, 2021.

About The Glen Grant
The Glen Grant's story began in 1840, in Rothes, Speyside – Scotland's premier region for Whisky production; by brothers John and James Grant. Still produced in Rothes today, The Glen Grant holds a range of prestigious industry awards and is world renowned for its consistent quality across its aged variants.  The elegant and seductively smooth taste for which The Glen Grant is famous is the result of the innovative tall slender stills and revolutionary purifiers that James 'The Major' Grant, son of founder James Grant, was one of the first to introduce over a century ago. Still used to this day, this lasting legacy continues to distinguish the brand.

Today, Dennis Malcolm, the multi-award winning The Glen Grant Master Distiller, directs and presides over the amber liquid. Born in the grounds of The Glen Grant Distillery in 1946, he has worked for The Glen Grant for over five decades, with an uncommon passion and unrivaled knowledge of the industry. Dennis' unmatched Scotch whisky experience ensures that every expression in The Glen Grant range makes the absolute best of the complex alchemy of spirit, wood and time.

The current range includes; The Glen Grant Major's Reserve, Arboralis, 10 Years Old, 12 Years Old, 15 Years Old, 18 Year Old (select markets), limited edition bottles and a selection of travel retail exclusive offerings, including a 12 Years Old Non-chill Filtered and Cask Haven.  The Glen Grant became part of the Campari Group portfolio in 2006. 'Artistry in oak': Gordon & MacPhail Reveals Much-anticipated Presentation Created by Sir David Adjaye for World's Oldest Single Malt Scotch Whisky

'Artistry in oak': Gordon & MacPhail Reveals Much-anticipated Presentation Created by Sir David Adjaye for World's Oldest Single Malt Scotch Whisky

ELGIN, Scotland, Sept. 2, 2021- Whisky creators Gordon & MacPhail today revealed the unique jewel-like decanter and oak pavilion designed by world-renowned architect and designer Sir David Adjaye OBE to celebrate their release of the oldest single malt Scotch ever bottled - Generations 80-Years-Old from Glenlivet Distillery.

The design is a celebration of the artistry, craft and care that went into the single malt it encases. Its unique form represents Gordon & MacPhail's history of repeatedly pushing the boundaries in terms of long-term whisky maturation, where experimentation, patience, and quality have remained the foundations for progress since 1895.

The creative theme for the ground-breaking release - 'Artistry in Oak' - bears tribute to both the precious and rare liquid, carefully nurtured in an oak cask by four generations of the family that owns Gordon & MacPhail, as well as its stunning presentation. Never before has oak and single malt spirit been combined for eight decades and the historic liquid has been described by renowned whisky writer Charlie MacLean as "truly, one of the finest I've ever encountered."

Ewen Mackintosh, Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail, comments, "It is often quoted that the maturation of whisky over very long periods of time is more art than science. The decanter and oak pavilion that David has created for our historic release is a true reflection of this art; the presentation is itself a work of art. I'm sure George Urquhart and his father John, who had the extraordinary foresight to lay down spirit from the Glenlivet Distillery in a bespoke Gordon & MacPhail cask to be enjoyed after their lifetime, would love the design. It pays tribute to their craft and vision."

"Oak is a primary material, produced from the planet," explains David Adjaye. "I appreciate its preciousness as an integral part of the whisky-making process. I wanted to create a design that pays tribute to the role oak plays in transforming liquid into an elixir with almost magical properties."

The jewel-like decanter contains lenses to provide focus on the richly coloured liquid. A generous volume of crystal balances both heft and delicacy, and provides a beguiling, tactile presence.

"The gentle combination of liquid, weight and form invokes a sense of care, responsibility and slowness. As you pour, a sense of time fades and all that is understood is the preciousness of each drop," adds Adjaye.

Designed to appear as hewn from a single solid block of crystal, the decanter's curving core needed to be individually hand-blown by experienced artisans overseen by Glencairn Crystal Studio, experts in ultra-premium decanters and another family business based in Scotland.

"The ambition was to create a vessel in which Gordon & MacPhail's unique experience and tradition is transmitted and incorporated," remarks Adjaye. "The vertical struts of the outer pavilion are reflective of trees in an oak forest from which the staves of the original cask were hewn.  A pivotal moment in the design narrative is the relationship between the light and shadow as the casing recreates the sunlight as it shines through oak trees within a natural forest setting. The act of opening the pavilion becomes a ceremonial and sensorial process."

While similar, no two decanters are exactly the same, reflecting the complexity of the process and its organic nature.

The oak pavilion is constructed from sustainably sourced oaks grown less than five miles from makers, Wardour Workshops, another family-owned company, based in Dorset, South West England.

Co-founder at Wardour, Dom Parish, comments, "Oak has this wondrously enduring quality that lasts forever."

Only 250 70cl decanters have been created. Decanter #1 is being auctioned by Sotheby's in Hong Kong on 7 October 2021 with a framed cask end from the original cask and a lithograph of the original concept drawings signed by David Adjaye. Auction proceeds (minus costs) are being donated to local Scottish charity Trees for Life whose mission is to rewild the Caledonian forest.

"The donation will help the Trees for Life nursery which grows 100,000 rare and native trees, including oaks, from seed each year," continues Ewen Mackintosh. "It's fitting that this whisky will provide a legacy for all that will last for generations."

Public showcases of the decanter and oak pavilion will be exhibited from early September 2021 in Sotheby's London, New York and Hong Kong galleries, in addition to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of Sotheby's 2021 Hong Kong Autumn Sales Series preview exhibition.

America's First Family Of Bourbon Unveils New Distillery That Pushes The Boundaries Of What American Whiskey Can Be

America's First Family Of Bourbon Unveils New Distillery That Pushes The Boundaries Of What American Whiskey Can Be

The Fred B. Noe Distillery, honoring seventh generation Master Distiller Fred Noe, will be the new home to many of the James B. Beam Distilling Co.'s Small Batch Whiskies and future innovations

CLERMONT, Ky., Aug. 31, 2021 - The James B. Beam Distilling Co. (JBBDCo), celebrated and award-winning makers of genuine American whiskey for over 225 years, today proudly unveils the Fred B. Noe Distillery, which is dedicated to Seventh Generation Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe. Celebrating JBBDCo's ethos of Genuine in the Making – its tireless and timeless commitment to honoring, elevating and pioneering what American Whiskey should and could be – the new distillery will be led by Noe's son, Eighth Generation Beam Distiller Freddie Noe. It will produce several of the James B. Beam Distilling Co.'s well-known and award-winning brands, including Freddie's acclaimed Little Book® Whiskey annual series of blends, as well as future innovations.

"Our new distillery is really the heart and soul of the Beam legacy. Years ago after my dad, Booker Noe, created the original small batch bourbons, he looked to me to welcome more whiskey drinkers into our family of brands. Now as I look ahead, it's with great pride that I hand the reins of this special place over to my son Freddie, and I look forward to working side-by-side as he leads the next chapter in whiskey making for the James B. Beam Distilling Co.," Fred Noe said. "At the new distillery Freddie will continue to experiment with new fermentation, distillation and blending techniques to produce category-defining and boundary-pushing whiskey of the highest quality. I can't wait to see what he does with it, and I know that my dad is smiling down on us today."

The Fred B. Noe Distillery joins the Beam family's iconic distillery campus in Clermont, KY that has produced bourbon since 1935, including Jim Beam®, the number one-selling bourbon in the world. Some of the James B. Beam Distilling Co.'s most popular super-premium whiskies, including Booker's® Bourbon, Baker's® Bourbon and Little Book® Whiskey, will find a permanent home at the Fred B. Noe Distillery. The new distillery will also offer a space for continued experimentation and exploration of the future American whiskey category.  The newly launched exclusive membership program, Barreled & Boxed, will allow consumers to experience the distilling company's most exciting releases straight to their doorsteps in select states, where legal.

"This new distillery represents my family's bourbon legacy – both where we've been and where we're headed," said Freddie Noe. "In this new home, I look forward to honoring all of my dad's contributions and continuing to innovate and push the boundaries in American whiskey. Over the last five years, I've been exploring new and interesting blends, ages and flavors on my quest to build upon the legacy my dad and granddad pioneered. I'm eager to show the world what we've been up to, and to offer fans everywhere a taste of the special whiskies we've been cooking up."

The Fred B. Noe Distillery, powered by renewable energy through a high-efficiency electric boiler and the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs), will also offer experiential learning through distillation sessions and seminars with Freddie Noe, hands-on activities in the blending lab, and a tasting bar to sample new and yet-to-be released innovations for select members of the trade. Additionally, a state-of-the-art classroom for the University of Kentucky®'s James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits will be housed at the Fred B. Noe Distillery wherein future leaders in the American Whiskey industry will come together to learn the genuine whiskey making craft firsthand from the James B. Beam Distilling Company's experts.

To bring the Fred B. Noe Distillery to life, James B. Beam Distilling Co. brought together a team of world renowned designers and builders. The external inspiration and visitor experience was provided by LOVE, a spatial design, branding, packaging and advertising agency. Architects from Joseph and Joseph designed the base distillery build, and OJB designed the landscape. Buzick Construction, Inc. took the lead on building both of these areas. Additionally, architects from Bergmeyer designed the consumer footprint, which was built by Shawmut Design and Construction. Project management and owner's representation for the visitor experience was led by Stys Hospitality Initiative.
