About Whiskey Thief Distilling:

Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. is a craft distillery in Kentucky known for offering a unique "thieving" experience where visitors taste and fill their own single-barrel bourbon bottles straight from the cask. They operate two locations: a farm distillery in rural Franklin County and a tasting room in the NuLu neighborhood of Louisville.

Visitor Experience

Whiskey Thief specializes in an interactive, hands-on approach to bourbon tourism, making it distinct from many larger distilleries which often require advance reservations.

  • "Thieving" Process: Guests use a traditional distiller's tool called a "whiskey thief" to draw samples or fill their own bottles directly from barrels at barrel strength. This creates a highly personalized and unique product, as no two barrels are exactly alike.
  • Walk-ins Welcome: Both the farm distillery and the NuLu location welcome walk-in visitors, which is a key part of their customer service philosophy.
  • Atmosphere: The experience is designed to be casual and welcoming, with the farm location being pet-friendly and the NuLu location offering a listening lounge with live music and cocktails.

Locations and Products

Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. operates from two main locations:

  • Franklin County Farm Distillery: This is the original, 127-acre working farm where they grow their own corn and distill spirits using a pot still. Visitors can witness the full grain-to-glass process. The address is 283 Crab Orchard Rd, Frankfort, KY 40601.
  • Louisville NuLu Tasting & Listening Room: A more urban outpost at 610 Nanny Goat Strut, Louisville, KY 40202, offering the same barrel thieving experience, along with a full cocktail bar and live music events.

Their products, including bourbons, rye whiskies, and gin, are exclusively sold at these two locations and are not distributed to retail stores.

Distilling Practices

The distillery focuses on single-barrel, uncut, and unfiltered spirits. They produce around 1,000 barrels of whiskey annually and experiment with different mash bills and ages to offer a diverse range of single-barrel options. Beyond their own spirits, they offer commercial services such as contract distilling, bottling, storage, and private barrel selection programs for other brands.
