Whyte & Mackay Launches Mackinlay's "The Journey"
Whyte & Mackay today, October 26 2012, launched a new version of its world famous Mackinlay's malt at Whisky Fest in New York
Affectionately known as "Shackleton's whisky", the spirit is a replica of the century old whisky found under Ernest Shackleton's hut on the Antarctic. Following the huge success of its original recreation, the Glasgow based distiller has launched a follow up called Mackinlay's The Journey.
The move was prompted by a request from the Antarctic Heritage Trust (AHT), the charity which found the whisky, to find ways to raise much needed funds for the conservation of the expedition bases on the Antarctic.
The first run of the replica Mackinlay's sold out within a year and that success raised close to £250,000 for the AHT. The funds will be used for conservation and research, and a web based education programme about the great explorer.
The release of the new recreation is expected to raise a further £500,000 for the AHT.
The Trust's executive director Nigel Watson said: "I was delighted when I heard the news that Whyte & Mackay would launch a different product called Mackinlay's The Journey. Not only will it give more people a chance to taste part of history, the donation from future sales will greatly assist our efforts to conserve and maintain Shackleton's Antarctic legacy for the benefit of current and future generations. The Trust is extremely grateful for their major contribution to the cause."
The Macallan, Highland Park Spur Demand With Limited Edition Malts
From Shanken:
Global single malt Scotch whisky exports surged 29% to £744.6 million ($1.2b) last year, with high-end whiskies—especially limited bottlings—becoming an increasingly important driver of premiumization within the category. The Edrington Group’s Macallan and Highland Park labels have been among those aggressively targeting the connoisseur segment in established and emerging markets alike through limited production releases.
“Both brands are growing at double the rate of the premium/super-premium malt category,” says Edrington Group director of malts Ken Grier, who attributes that growth to expanded availability to new outlets, new drinkers and premiumization of the portfolio through specialty whiskies like Macallan’s Masters of Photography series and Highland Park’s Valhalla Collection. The current editions of those limited franchises—Masters of Photography’s Annie Leibovitz installment ($2,750 a bottle) and Highland Park’s Thor ($199)—are both on pace to sell out during the holidays. The ongoing strength of Macallan 18-year-old and above and Highland Park 12-, 18- and 50-year-olds has also helped keep up momentum at the high end, Grier adds. By volume, Macallan, a Speyside malt, rose 9% to 146,000 cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank. Highland Park, from Orkney, was flat at 12,000 cases.
But while ultra-premium bottlings and limited editions capitalize on rising connoisseurship among consumers, the scarce nature of single malts also provides challenges for the industry. With interest in single malts spreading in both established markets like the U.S. and in emerging economies across Asia, effectively managing stocks to ensure adequate supply in the years ahead will be paramount.
There’s an “ongoing shortage of stock for all players in single malt,” says Grier. “None of us could have foreseen its current appeal. It’s up to us to make the best use of quality stocks and price up to a level that reflects the cachet of the category while directing supplies to aspirational points of purchase around the world.”
One solution to help mitigate supply constraints is shedding age statements for some new whiskies, as Macallan has with its 1824 Collection. “We have and will continue to produce some innovative expressions with superb flavor under umbrellas like the 1824 Collection, which unshackles our whisky maker from working purely within age-stated whiskies alone,” he says.

Woodford Reserve Releases Limited Edition 'Four Wood' Bourbon
LOUISVILLE, Ken., Oct. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/jm -- Woodford Reserve announces the latest extension of its acclaimed Master's Collection which will be released in early November. This seventh release, called Four Wood, is part of the limited edition bottlings that push the limit of what Kentucky Whiskey offers by crafting rare and innovative products.
Four Wood is a unique batching of mature Woodford Reserve bourbon which has been aged in American Oak and has been finished in barrels made from Maple Wood, Sherry Wood and Port Wood. In 1999 Woodford Reserve began to experiment with wood finishing. Over the years a great deal of knowledge has been compiled on how fully matured Woodford Reserve interacts with still wine barrels, other spirit type barrels, exotic wood barrels and fortified wine barrels.
"This year's Master's Collection brings together a unique combination of exotic wood (Maple) and fortified wine (Port and Sherry) in a complex interplay of flavors unsurpassed in our craft," said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris. "The batching ratios of the three finishing barrels were painstakingly chosen so that no one character dominated the final product. Instead, Four Wood is so balanced that the palate effects of each of the four woods plays a discernible role in the final flavor presentation."
With each release, one of the five sources of flavor is changed for the Master's Collection expressions. These five sources – grain, water, fermentation, distillation, and maturation – are unique to bourbon whiskey, and altering just one of them creates a totally new flavor profile.
"By changing the way Woodford Reserve is matured we have created a distinctly unique bourbon for this year's Master's Collection," said Brand Manager Laura Petry. "As far as we know, Woodford Reserve is the first and only Kentucky Whiskey to use four unique barrels in the maturation process."
Four Wood is the seventh in the Woodford Reserve Master's Collection series following Four Grain, Sonoma-Cutrer Finish, Sweet Mash, Seasoned Oak, Maple Wood Finish and Rare Rye Selection offerings. Released periodically at the master distiller's discretion, the Master's Collection whiskeys are extremely limited in quantity and bottled only once, in a proprietary package inspired by the copper pot stills of The Woodford Reserve Distillery.
The inspiration for the Master's Collection is rooted in the rich history and tradition of what is today known as The Woodford Reserve Distillery. In the mid-1800s distillery owner Oscar Pepper and Master Distiller James Crow studied and recommended use of key processes like sour mashing and charred barrel maturation at the historic Woodford County distillery. These practices are still maintained in the bourbon industry, and today the distillery receives more than 130,000 visitors annually.
Four Wood will be sold in 47 U.S. markets, and a limited quantity will be available in Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Sweden, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, Australia and in various Duty Free markets. Each bottle is individually numbered and presented at 94.4 proof. Available in major metro markets, limited cases are available with a suggested retail price of $99.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select
From Shanken:
Brown-Forman is launching an ultra-premium Frank Sinatra-inspired extension to Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey. The Associated Press reports that Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select will launch first in Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport in December, followed by a rollout to global airports as well as high-end retail stores in the U.S. and the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 2013. It will be priced at $150 a 1-liter bottle. The 90-proof whiskey is made from specially designed “Sinatra barrels” hand-selected by master distiller Jeff Arnett that feature grooves to allow more contact between the liquid and the barrel, creating a whiskey darker in color than the classic Jack Daniel’s with oak and spice notes and a vanilla finish. It’s packaged in a gift box that also features a book detailing the relationship between Sinatra and Jack Daniel’s.
Jim Beam & Jack Daniels Adding White Whiskeys
From Shanken:
Propelled by the craft distilling and mixology movements, white whiskies have been increasing in visibility in recent years. Now, whiskey heavyweights Beam Inc. and Brown-Forman are set to enter the segment through their Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s franchises.
Beam’s new entry, Jim Beam Jacob’s Ghost (named for founding distiller Jacob Beam), is a clear whiskey aged one year in charred, white oak barrels. The 40%-abv offering will roll out next February, retailing at $22 a bottle.
Meanwhile, Jack Daniel’s Unaged Rye is slated to begin hitting Tennessee in December, with other selected U.S. markets to follow in January. A combination of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley, the new Jack extension is also 40% abv, but will sell at a hefty premium to Jacob’s Ghost, retailing around $50 a bottle.
The new products from Jim Beam and Jack Daniel’s will join a host of craft-distilled white whiskies already on the market, including California-based Craft Distillers’ Low Gap ($40), which won Whisky Advocate’s Artisan Whiskey of the Year (North America) award. Bigger players in the segment include Heaven Hill—with its Trybox New Make and Rye New Make offerings ($25)—and Sazerac’s Buffalo Trace Distillery with its White Dog Mash No. 1, White Dog Wheated Mash and White Dog Rye Mash ($16 a 375-ml.).
While maintaining a presence in the category, Buffalo Trace thinks white whiskey will remain a niche segment in the U.S. “A little variety is nice, but a decade from now I don’t think you’ll find a hundred different White Dogs available at your local liquor store,” says Kris Comstock, Bourbon brand manager at Buffalo Trace. “As they try white whiskies, consumers are discovering there are good reasons for aging, to give the spirit depth, flavor and sweetness.”
