About South Seas Distillery Crazy Cock:

Crazy Cock is a brand of Indian single malt whisky produced by South Seas Distilleries. Launched in late 2023, it is the distillery's first direct-to-consumer brand after four decades of supplying spirits to other major Indian and international brands.

Crazy Cock expressions

The brand was introduced with two unique expressions:

  • Crazy Cock "RARE": A non-peated, full-bodied whisky matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It features notes of honey, fruit, and spices, with a rich and smooth texture.
  • Crazy Cock "DHUA": The name means "smoke" in Hindi. This is a mildly peated expression that balances smoky undertones with the sweetness from ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask maturation.

Production and legacy

  • Indian roots: The whisky is made from six-row Indian barley grown in the plains of North India.
  • Tropical maturation: The distillery, located in the coastal town of Dahanu, Maharashtra, leverages its warm microclimate to speed up the maturation process. This tropical aging gives the whisky a unique and complex flavor profile with notes of tropical fruits and spices.
  • Expert craftsmanship: The whiskies are produced in small batches using traditional copper pot stills and are matured using a rare and extensive private collection of casks that the distillery has amassed over four decades.
  • Industry recognition: Crazy Cock was awarded "Best in Show" in the Indian Single Malt Whisky category at the 2025 Vinexposium-hosted IWS Awards.

The name "Crazy Cock"

The brand's name is inspired by the founder's "crazy" commitment to crafting fine Indian single malts at a time when the market barely existed in India. The "cock," or rooster, represents a new beginning, symbolizing the distillery's move into the direct-to-consumer market.
