About Woodford Reserve:

Woodford Reserve is a premium small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon produced at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. Introduced in 1996 by the Brown-Forman Corporation, it is crafted at one of the oldest distilling sites in the U.S., dating back to 1812.

Production & Flavor Philosophy

The brand focuses on "Five Sources of Flavor": water, grain, fermentation, distillation, and maturation.

  • Triple Distillation: Unlike most bourbons, it is triple-distilled in Scottish copper pot stills, creating a smoother, more refined spirit.
  • Unique Mash Bill: The flagship bourbon uses 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley, balancing sweetness with a spicy finish.
  • Heat-Cycled Aging: Barrels are matured in stone warehouses that are heated and cooled to control the whiskey's interaction with the wood, accelerating flavor development.
  • Limestone Water: The distillery uses iron-free, mineral-rich water from Glenn’s Creek, which flows directly under the property.

Core Product Range

Woodford Reserve offers five permanent "Core Range" expressions:

  • Kentucky Straight Bourbon: The flagship with notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and caramel; bottled at 90.4 proof.
  • Double Oaked: Matured in two separate charred oak barrels for extra richness and sweetness, often described as having a dessert-like profile.
  • Straight Rye Whiskey: Uses a pre-Prohibition style 53% rye mash bill to emphasize spicy and tobacco notes.
  • Straight Malt Whiskey: Made from 51% malted barley, offering a nutty and chocolatey profile for bourbon drinkers.
  • Straight Wheat Whiskey: A soft, fruit-forward whiskey with 52% wheat, featuring notes of honey and apple.

Heritage & Culture

  • National Historic Landmark: The distillery site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2000.
  • Kentucky Derby Sponsorship: Woodford Reserve is the "Official Bourbon" of the Kentucky Derby and releases a limited-edition commemorative bottle annually for the event.
  • Master Distiller: The current Master Distiller is Elizabeth McCall, who took the role in 2023 from longtime distiller Chris Morris.
