Pinhook Bourbon is a Kentucky-based whiskey brand known for its "vintage approach" to blending, inspired by the wine industry. Rather than aiming for a consistent flavor profile year after year, Pinhook crafts unique annual releases that showcase the best qualities of that specific year’s barrels.

The "Pinhooking" Concept

The brand's name and philosophy are rooted in a Kentucky horse racing tradition.

• Definition: "Pinhooking" is the practice of buying young thoroughbreds, overseeing their development, and selling them once they reach racing maturity.
• Whiskey Parallel: Pinhook applies this to whiskey by selecting promising young barrels, nurturing them through the aging process, and blending them at their peak.
• The Labels: Each annual release is dedicated to a promising thoroughbred from Bourbon Lane Stables. The labels feature the horse’s name and statistics, with designs inspired by the bright colors of jockey silks.

   

Distillation & Production

• Early Sourcing: From its founding in 2010 until 2017, Pinhook exclusively sourced its whiskey from MGP in Indiana.
• Castle & Key Distillery: Since 2017, Pinhook has distilled its own proprietary mash bills at the historic Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This site was originally the abandoned Old Taylor Distillery.
• Master Blender: Blends are developed by co-founder and Master Blender Sean Josephs, a certified sommelier who uses his wine background to guide the vintage-driven process.
