About Ledaig:

Ledaig (pronounced "Led-chig") is the heavily peated single malt expression produced at the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull. While the distillery is named "Tobermory," it actually began its life as the Ledaig Distillery when it was founded in 1798.

Key Characteristics

  • Production Style: It is distilled from heavily peated malted barley (typically around 35ppm) for roughly half the year, while the unpeated "Tobermory" expression is made during the other half.
  • Flavor Profile: Renowned for a robust, "dirty" medicinal smoke, it often features notes of brine, seaweed, black pepper, and campfire ash, balanced by a subtle underlying sweetness.
  • Purity: Bottles are typically non-chill filtered and contain no added coloring, preserving a rich, oily mouthfeel.

Popular Expressions

  • Ledaig 10 Year Old: The flagship "entry-level" bottle, widely considered one of the best value-for-money peated whiskies available.
  • Ledaig 18 Year Old: A more complex, sherried expression that balances the intense peat with dark fruit and oak spice.
  • Sinclair Series: A range of NAS (No Age Statement) whiskies featuring experimental finishes, such as the Rioja Cask Finish.
  • Limited Releases: Includes unique bottlings like the Triple Wood (Bourbon, Port, and Wine casks) or the cask-strength Hebridean Moon.

Distillery Quick Facts

  • Location: Tobermory, Isle of Mull (the only distillery on the island).
  • Founded: 1798 by John Sinclair.
  • Owner: Burn Stewart Distillers (a subsidiary of Heineken Beverages).
