Mortlach Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collaborates with Designer Chrissa Amuah to Create a Bespoke Light Fixture

Mortlach Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collaborates with Designer Chrissa Amuah to Create a Bespoke Light Fixture

2.81 Illustrates the Unique Distillation Process of the Intricately Made Spirit

NEW YORK, Dec. 6, 2022 Mortlach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a treasured spirit from Scotland's Speyside region, has partnered with Chrissa Amuah to create a brilliant light fixture for the Mortlach by Design program. Channeling the complex, multi-step distillation process that makes Mortlach unique, Amuah's multifaceted light fixture shares the journey of Mortlach from its origin to the final product. This bespoke piece is another pillar in the Mortlach by Design program, which has engaged some of the world's best designers including Luca Nichetto, Sabine Marcelis, Felicia Ferrone, and Joe Doucet to create bespoke pieces, culminating in the ultimate whisky experience.

The light fixture is aptly named 2.81 after the number of times that Mortlach whisky is distilled - a unique process that has been passed down for generations. In 1897, when Dr. Alexander Cowie formulated this distillation process, he did so knowing that it was a different way of making whisky. 'The Way' is akin to having three distilleries at one still house; in parallel, the 2.81 light fixture is designed with many conceptual, physical and material layers, which when unified stand as a beautifully complex light fixture. 2.81 is formed by a variety of technologies, processes, textures and materials that when united create a constant and intricate lighting fixture, symbolic of each of the stages that create Mortlach whisky.

"Creating 2.81 was a unique challenge as I aimed to balance the deep complexities and high caliber craftsmanship that defines the spirit," explains Chrissa Amuah.

Mortlach by Design celebrates the unique characteristics of Mortlach whisky and brings together some of the world's best designers to create bespoke products for the ultimate whisky experience. For more information or to purchase a bottle of Mortlach, visit mortlach.com.

About Mortlach

The Mortlach distillery was founded in 1823 in Dufftown, Scotland by James Findlater and his two partners, Donald McIntosh and Alexander Gordon. In 1852, the distillery was reopened by John Gordon after a few silent years. In 1853, Gordon took on George Cowie as a partner, a former engineer who spent a career carving the great Scottish railways into the rugged landscape, creating John Gordon & Co. Cowie became the sole proprietor when Gordon died in 1867.

Dr. Alexander Cowie, George's son, oversaw the very first spirit distillation through a completely unique and fiendishly complex process, which he crafted using his scientific acumen. He was not a distiller by trade and had not long returned from a posting in Hong Kong, where he spent five years practicing medicine. After the untimely death of his older brother, he returned to run Dufftown's oldest distillery with his father. George bestowed it all to Alexander when he died, and Alexander doubled the stills his father left him. www.mortlach.com

UNCLE NEAREST PREMIUM WHISKEY CROSSES $100 MILLION SALES MARK

image

Nearest Green Distillery Is Officially the Most Successful Black-Owned Distillery in the World

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 5, 2022- Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the most-awarded Bourbon and American Whiskey of 2019, 2020, and 2021, announced today that its sales exceeded $100 million through October 2022, with an on-track forecast to more than double that total by the end of 2023. Its recently expanded 323-acre distillery has already welcomed more than 100,000 guests with that number increasing significantly every week.

The company was founded by its CEO Fawn Weaver in 2017. She was then joined by Chief Business Officer Katharine Jerkens and, shortly after, Victoria Eady Butler, the great-great-granddaughter of the company's namesake, Nearest Green, and four-time Master Blender of the Year recipient. Last year, Uncle Nearest announced it had become the best-selling Black American-founded, owned, and led spirit brand in U.S. history. With today's announcement, the company has taken on the world's largest. The company's whiskey portfolio of seven offerings, available at its distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee and in all 50 states, territories, and districts nationwide, ranges in suggested retail price from $49.99 to $149.

"To reach this and every other milestone on our horizon, we continue to push nonstop. Every penny this company has earned has gone back into the business, as well as to put Nearest Green's college-age descendants through college and to invest in minority-owned businesses and entrepreneurs through our Black Business Booster program (BBB), the Nearest and Jack Advancement Initiative (NJAI) and Uncle Nearest Ventures," said Weaver. "Every cent we make in the future will continue to do the same. We have an entire generation of women and people of color, who represent 70 percent of our country but still feel marginalized and underrepresented, counting on us. This group continues to look to Uncle Nearest as proof that anything is possible. We will not let them down. With the support of one of the most loyal consumer bases in spirits, we will continue to do the 'impossible' so they know, as long as they operate in excellence and refuse to give up, they can achieve whatever their heart believes."

On Juneteenth 2021, an expanded Nearest Green Distillery opened to the public, a project that has cost approximately $50 million. On Black Friday, the company released its much-anticipated Single Barrel Black Label at the distillery for $79 and sold out of the first set of barrels immediately, requiring an additional bottling before doors opened the following morning.

"I joined the team this year with one mission in mind: to make Nearest Green Distillery one of the top three most visited distilleries in the world," said Brielle Caruso, Chief Marketing Officer for Nearest Green Distillery, who two years ago made history as the first Asian American female CMO in the spirits industry. "I have no doubt we will achieve that milestone even faster than we crossed the $100 million sales mark."

"For the longest time, folks were sitting around waiting for us to fail. First, they underestimated us, then they expected us to fail," said Victoria Eady Butler. "I guess they do that with independent companies owned by women or people of color. Well, more than five years into this level of growth, y'all can stop waiting. We are not a fad or some trendy brand – we are a purpose-driven, mission-oriented company. Uncle Nearest and Nearest Green Distillery aren't just here to stay, but to grow and sustain at a pace never seen before in our industry."

Chemist Spirits Unveils Its First Craft Single Malt Whiskey In Collaboration with Biltmore

Chemist Spirits Unveils Its First Craft Single Malt Whiskey In Collaboration with Biltmore

ASHEVILLE, N.C. , Dec. 5, 2022 - Chemist Spirits, an artisan Prohibition-era distillery located in the heart of downtown Asheville, has released its inaugural Biltmore Single Malt Whiskey, signaling the next tradition in Chemist's longstanding partnership with Biltmore.

Hand crafted with estate-grown Calypso barley aged in new oak barrels and finished in Biltmore Sangiovese barrels for a perfectly balanced flavor profile, Biltmore Single Malt Whiskey captures the timeless elegance of America's finest and most legendary estate.

"Biltmore single malt whiskey is an heirloom-quality whiskey with an artful flavor profile that is smooth yet complex. This hand-crafted whiskey is designed to enjoy neat, on the rocks or in a cocktail," said Debbie Word, founder, owner and distiller at Chemist Spirits. "The collaborative expressions we've released with Biltmore to date, including our best-selling Biltmore Conservatory Rose Gin, demonstrate a strong creative partnership and a shared dedication to exceptional craftsmanship and quality."

The elegant rose-gold tint of Biltmore single malt whiskey provides a visual hint of its heavy red wine barrel influence. It is dominated on the nose by butterscotch and caramelized sugar with notes of maple syrup, pralines, candied pecans, dates, and syrupy stewed plums. The delicate spices beautifully integrate with the soft fruits, dried apricots, honey, and vanilla sugar and a sweet smooth creaminess which is complemented with hints of butterscotch and cherry syrup, with lingering fine-ground pepper and polished oak on the finish.

"Biltmore is thrilled to come together again with Chemist Spirits to introduce Biltmore single malt whiskey, which is created for whiskey connoisseurs and collectors alike," said Heather Jordan, Director of Marketing, Biltmore Wine Company. "The care that Chemist Spirits takes into crafting exceptional products, including the annual release of Biltmore Conservatory Rose Gin and now this limited-edition single malt whiskey, mirrors Biltmore's commitment to excellence. We're excited to give consumers another taste of our award-winning collaboration."

The inaugural Biltmore Single Malt Whiskey release is presented at 47% ABV and offered at $90. A limited number of cases will be available through and online at chemistspirits.com/Biltmore-single-malt.

Wyoming Whiskey Celebrates 10 Years of Whiskey Making

image

The craft distiller celebrates with the release of a 10 Year Anniversary Edition rye bourbon

KIRBY, Wyo., Dec. 1, 2022 Wyoming Whiskey celebrates a decade of whiskey making with the release of a 10 Year Anniversary Edition Straight Bourbon Whiskey. In honor of the anniversary, Wyoming Whiskey founding Master Distiller Steve Nally and Master Blender Nancy Fraley have barrel selected and batched a rich and balanced 10-year-old rye bourbon worthy of the milestone. This masterpiece whiskey reflects 20 of the rarest casks at the Wyoming Whiskey distillery that were filled in November and December of 2011 and is the oldest product ever released by Wyoming Whiskey.

Wyoming Whiskey celebrates a decade of whiskey making with the release of a 10 Year Anniversary Edition rye bourbon

"Over the last ten years, these barrels have quietly evolved into something extraordinary," said Wyoming Whiskey Co-Founder David DeFazio. "10 Year Anniversary Edition is in a class of its own. We are blown away by the quality and complexity of this product. It's memorable."

Ten years ago today, Brad and Kate Mead and David DeFazio launched their flagship Small Batch bourbon. Years before, they started with the lofty goal of creating America's next great bourbon and the promise of extending the bourbon frontier to the Rocky Mountains. Since then, every drop of Wyoming Whiskey carries with it the character of the region and has become the Whiskey of the West.

Cattle ranchers and attorneys by trade, the entrepreneurial trio packed their ambition and headed to Kentucky where they went knocking on the door of Bourbon Hall of Famer, Steve Nally. They already had the land, water and grains they needed to produce bourbon, they just needed the leadership and knowledge of a world-renowned distiller to put the pieces together. With little convincing, Nally became Wyoming Whiskey's founding distiller. The rest is history.

"We are proud to honor our roots in this state with an exceptional 10-year-old whiskey created by the fusion of Wyoming water, Wyoming grains and Wyoming weather. We will always distill our whiskey the right way, not the easy way," said Brad Mead, Co-Founder of Wyoming Whiskey.

Wyoming Whiskey 10 Year Anniversary Edition Rye Bourbon (MSRP $199.99)

Mash bill: 68% Corn, 20% Rye, 12% Malted Barley
Specs: Aged 10.5 years, 51.7% ABV, 103.4 proof
Tasting notes:

  • COLOR: After 10 years in the barrel, it has developed a deep copper to mahogany color
  • NOSE: Heady notes of Rye Manhattan cocktails with brandied cherries, medjool dates in thick syrup, cayenne pepper-candied pecans, and baklava drizzled with orange blossom honey
  • PALATE: Candied yams with pecans and toasted marshmallows, black currant liqueur, sweet cornbread muffins with honey butter, and cinnamon toast with blackberry-maple syrup.
  • MOUTHFEEL: Soft, warming alcohol, with caramelized wood sugars and a tingle of rye spice enveloping the mouth cavity.
  • FINISH: Lingering notes of dark dried fruit mingled with warming brown baking spices.

10 Year Anniversary Edition will be available in-store in select US markets including California, Colorado, Georgia, Maine, New York and Wyoming.

Coors Whiskey Co. brings Five Trail to Canada, Panama

From Molson Coors & Alex Parker:

Five Trail is going international.

The award-winning whiskey from Coors Whiskey Co. is set to enter its first international markets in December, when it launches in Panama and in Canada, at Ontario LCBO stores and select on-premise accounts.

“There is a huge level of interest for American whiskey in international markets right now,” says David Coors, vice president of next generation beverages for Molson Coors. Exports of American whiskey increased 22% in the first seven months of 2021 versus the prior year, according to Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS), a trade group representing spirits interests.

And Canada is among the top importers of American whiskey, holding the No. 6 spot, according to DISCUS. Panama also ranks among the top-20 importers of American whiskey, DISCUS data show.

Distilled with the same Coors barley that makes Coors Light, Five Trail will be sold as a super-premium brand, retailing for CA$79.95. It will sell as an ultra-premium whiskey in Panama.

Launched last year in the U.S., Five Trail has quickly gained a reputation as a quality whiskey. It won double gold at the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition in April, and has taken home other awards from industry competitions like the SIP Awards and ASCOT Awards.

Meanwhile, strong consumer demand has paved the way for its expansion into 11 states, with more on the way.

Canada

Five Trail arrives as the whiskey market in Canada continues to grow, increasing to 49.45 million liters in 2021, up nearly 7% since 2018, according to Statistics Canada. American whiskey, in particular, has become a favorite of Canadian drinkers, says Dan Lundberg, senior director of Molson Coors Beverage Company’s Canadian craft beer division, Six Pints Collective.

“Five Trail is an absolutely delicious whiskey, and there’s a huge interest in whiskey in Canada,” he says. “There’s a real connoisseurship here and interest in new blends from new places and producers. We’re tapping into that consumer desire, and I think Canadians are going to love Five Trail.”

The whiskey is Molson Coors’ first foray into full-strength spirits in Canada since the 1800s, further cementing its transformation into a beverage company, Lundberg says.

“The story behind the brand is incredibly strong. The whiskey itself is fantastic. We have a strong belief it’s going to be a winner in this market,” he says. “Given our success over the last 230 years, I think consumers will be excited to see us introduce something like Five Trail.”

Panama

Five Trail’s expansion into Panama is also Molson Coors’ first advance into full-strength spirits in Latin America, where it imports brands such as Blue Moon, Coors Light and Miller Genuine Draft.

Coors sees parallels with in Five Trail’s southward expansion with that of Blue Moon, which opened its first Panamanian location in 2019. It now has two taprooms in Panama, one in Panama City’s Costa del Este neighborhood and another in Panama City’s historic Casco Viejo area.

“There’s a great affinity for American brands (in Panama),” Coors says. “It’s a strong whiskey market as well. Our beer portfolio has resonated well with consumers there, and we’re hopeful the Five Trail whiskey brand does, as well.”
