Father's Day is Prime Time for Whiskey, Finds Technomic

imageCHICAGO, June 5, 2014 -- With Father's Day around the corner, whiskey could easily top the list as consumers search for the perfect gift for Dad.  Technomic is tracking ongoing growth in whiskey – particularly American and Irish selections – and whiskey continues to significantly outperform not only the spirits industry, but also the wine and beer industries in 2014. The popularity of the spirit as part of Father's Day traditions will undoubtedly add to its upward sales and volume trajectory.

"Consumers are clamoring for whiskey, and Father's Day will likely see some people toasting dear old Dad with whiskey at a dinner out or poolside barbecue, while others will present him with a gift of the quintessential American spirit," says Donna Hood Crecca, Senior Director at Technomic. "Product innovation in whiskey is ongoing, and Father's Day is an excellent opportunity to introduce Dads around the country to a new brand or a new expression of a long-time favorite."

This infographic, based on Technomic research detailed below, provides specific data points on the growth of whiskey – including trends in American, Canadian, Irish and Scotch whiskey – plus some new products and a look at how whiskey is being used in drinks at restaurants around the country.

The 2014 SpiritsTAB Report is part of Technomic's Trends in Adult Beverage (TAB) series, and provides an in-depth look at national volume and sales information for spirits categories, brands and suppliers, as well as actionable outlook and projection data, and consumer insights around spirits purchases on-premise and at retail.

DRINK (Digital Resource INformation Knowledgebase) is Technomic's online resource featuring spirits, wine and beer volume and sales information, category analysis, New Product Tracker and additional tools and insights for adult beverage professionals. DRINK is searchable, exportable and constantly updated.

Laphroaig® Single Malt Scotch Whisky Welcomes All Opinions

image

DEERFIELD, IL - Laphroaig®, the world's #1 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is unveiling its new global advertising and digital campaign featuring candid, real-life opinions of Laphroaig® from some of the brands biggest fans. The idea behind "#OpinionsWelcome" is to inspire whisky drinkers to share their own personal Laphroaig® "tasting notes" by showcasing the often offbeat and unique descriptions that members of Friends of Laphroaig®, the brand's distinguished loyalty group, have provided over the years, as well as first-time Laphroaig drinkers. By commemorating the passion of an enlightened few, Laphroaig® hopes to intrigue those who are unfamiliar with, but interested in trying it for the first time.

With authentic descriptions like, "Smells like medicine. Tastes like soil. My whisky of choice," and "Salt, peat, smoke, iodine and seaweed. My friend the oceanographer said it tasted 'like dead fish' I was hooked," the campaign will be brought to life through print and digital ads, as well as video content.

"Laphroaig® has long been a brand that elicited diverse and strong opinions from those who taste it, and the quotes we've selected to showcase at the launch of the campaign honor our long time friends and represent their affinity for Laphroaig®," said John Campbell, Laphroaig® Master Distiller. "These authentic reactions will entice those unfamiliar with the whisky and inspire them to share their own opinions of Laphroaig®."

At the heart of the campaign is a microsite www.Laphroaig.com/Opinions which will act as the central hub for the public to submit their own opinions of Laphroaig®. In addition to showcasing the content online, some of the newly generated opinions will be selected and used within future advertisements and as brand content in the Laphroaig® social media channels. To further inspire intrigue, a series of viral videos titled,#OpinionsWelcome, will feature various people tasting Laphroaig® and openly sharing their tasting experience with the liquid -- whether positive or negative. The videos will premiere throughout 2014 and can be viewed at www.Laphroaig.com/Opinions and athttp://www.YouTube.com.

Fans are encouraged to join the discussion and share their opinions by using the hashtag #OpinionsWelcome on Facebook and Twitter.
