Award-Winning Distillery Buffalo Trace Selects Premium Barrel for Holland America Line

Master blenders Drew Mayville and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee Freddie Johnson curate an exclusive barrel for the fleet

SEATTLE, Feb. 15, 2024  Holland America Line's beverage program is introducing an exclusive single barrel select bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States. This premium offering, curated by Sazerac Master Blender Drew Mayville and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee Freddie Johnson, will be available fleetwide in March while supplies last.

The opportunity to serve this unique bourbon arose when Mayville, an avid Holland America Line cruiser, endorsed the cruise line for the prestigious Sazerac Barrel Select program — an honor limited to only a few participants each year. Sazerac is a family of more than 450 brands from award-winning distilleries around the world. The Sazerac Barrel Select Program allows spirits enthusiasts the unique opportunity to hand-pick a barrel from Sazerac's award-winning collection.

"We strive to share experiences with our guests that they won't find anywhere else," said Michael Stendebach, Holland America Line's vice president of food, beverage and rooms divisions. "Collaborating with Buffalo Trace to craft a signature bourbon has been an incredible journey. Drew and Freddie guided us to select a barrel that will resonate with our guests and is the perfect representation of our two iconic brands."

Holland America Line team members were invited to Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky to join Mayville and Johnson in the private barrel selection room, located in the well-known Warehouse D. At the distillery, the group chose four barrels, and then Mayville and Johnson — both icons in the bourbon and spirits world — guided them through a tasting. The group ultimately chose a barrel that offers the distinct characteristics of Buffalo Trace Bourbon, with more intense notes of oak and spice on the nose with a smooth, lingering finish. Mayville reflected on the experience, stating: "We aimed to select an expressive and distinctive barrel for Holland America Line, confident that their guests would enjoy trying something truly unique to the cruise line."

The standout choice was Barrel #002, filled on Dec. 21, 2015, and aged in Warehouse U on Floor 5, Rick 34. This hand-selected barrel has been bottled and shipped fleetwide and will be available for guests to order in March. Enthusiasts seeking to try this exclusive bourbon will find it in the Ocean Bar on each Holland America ship, where it will be served neat, on the rocks, or as an Old Fashioned.

Buffalo Trace joins Holland America Line's evolving beverage program that includes partnering with award-winning bartender Ivy Mix who created new cocktails that capture the essence of Mexico and Latin America, launching its own De Lijn gin and introducing a traditional, pirate-inspired rum punch crafted by renowned mixologist David Wondrich that is available on Caribbean cruises. Additional destination-inspired beverage partnerships will be announced soon.

WESTLAND DISTILLERY ACHIEVES CERTIFIED B CORP™ STATUS

Leading American Single Malt Whiskey Producer Meets the Required Social & Environmental Targets to Become a Certified B Corporation & Be a Force for Good

SEATTLE, Feb. 13, 2024  Already one of the original leading American Single Malt Whiskey producers, Westland Distillery announces today another proud achievement: earning B Corp™ Certification, which demands adhering to the highest levels of social and environmental performance, public transparency and accountability.

Administered by the nonprofit B Lab, B Corp™ certification puts Westland within a global community of for-profit leaders pledging to use business as a force for good – making decisions based on their positive impact on people and the planet. To become a Certified B Corporation, companies undergo a rigorous review of the impact of their operations and business model on their workers, customers, communities and environment, and must meet a minimum verified score on the B Impact Assessment.

"Achieving B Corp status has been central to Westland's mission since its inception," says Jason Moore, Westland Distillery's Managing Director. "When we speak of being 'thoughtfully made,' we don't just mean our award-winning single malts. We strive to be thoughtful throughout every aspect of our business, which is why the entire Westland team is so immensely proud to achieve this incredible milestone."

Central pillars of the B Corp verification process evaluate such tenets as transparency; the health, wellness and safety of workers; customer satisfaction; environmental impact, and relationships with local suppliers.

"Knowing our farmers and grain breeders directly, plus our work with Washington State University's Bread Lab, are critical to our success with our community and our resulting whiskies," says Master Distiller Tyler Pederson, who oversees the creation of Westland's Flagship American Single Malt Whiskey and the Outpost Range of limited edition single malts – Garryana, which showcases the Pacific Northwest's rare indigenous oak Quercus Garryana; Colere, which showcases local barley varieties source through local farmers, and Solum, which is the first nationally released American whiskey peated with American peat.

"Pioneering the use of American peat, working to preserve and replant Quercus Garryana oak trees, and achieving Energy Star certification are just some of the steps we've taken in our comprehensive approach to sustainable practices," says Pederson. Westland invests in technology that ensures optimal environmental impact throughout the production process, such as employing a cooling tower to recycle water for condensers and thereby reduce water waste.

"Westland is an open book when it comes to transparency," says Moore. "We find that sharing as much information about sourcing and production as possible – especially with our whiskey releases – is what sets us apart." This sharing philosophy is central to the Tasting Room visitor experience at Westland in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, where guests receive comprehensive information on every aspect of the Westland story in addition to tasting their award-winning American single malts.

About Westland Distillery
Founded in 2010 and acquired by Remy-Cointreau in 2017, Seattle's Westland Distillery brings a new and uniquely American voice to the world of single malt whiskey by exploring possibilities that have been ignored for generations. Along the way, Westland has been recognized as the country's leading producer of American Single Malt Whiskey and founded the formal establishment of the emerging American Single Malt Whiskey category by starting the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission. While the distillery uses the same basic ingredients and processes used for centuries by traditional Old World single malt producers, it doesn't simply seek to replicate the results of its Scottish predecessors. Instead, Westland works to create whiskies that reflect the distinct qualities of its time, place and culture in the Pacific Northwest. All of Westland's expressions are distilled at the Seattle distillery from 100% malted barley and fermented with a unique Belgian Saison brewer's yeast before maturing in one of a variety of cask types, including new American oak, ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, and Garry Oak, to name a few. Westland achieved Energy Star Certification in 2023 and B Corp Certification in 2024.

Staghorn Names Lisa Wicker Master Distiller of New Garrard County Distilling Co.

Former Widow Jane President and Master Distiller Takes Helm at Largest All-New Independent Distillery in Kentucky

ATLANTA (February 13, 2024) – Atlanta-based premium spirits company Staghorn has named award-winning craft whiskey maker Lisa Wicker as the first Master Distiller of its recently opened Garrard County Distilling Co. in Lancaster, Kentucky. The former Widow Jane Distillery leader will oversee whiskey making at the largest all-new independent distillery in the commonwealth, capable of producing 8.5 million proof gallons or 150,000 barrels of whiskey a year. The distillery began operations in January.

Wicker brings more than 20 years of distilling and winemaking experience to Garrard County Distilling Co. In her new role as Master Distiller, she will manage all aspects of whiskey production, including grain selection, fermentation, distillation, blending, and aging for the company’s owned whiskey brands, including All Nations, as well as contract-distilled whiskey.

Prior to joining Garrard County Distilling Co., Wicker was the President and Master Distiller of Widow Jane Distillery in Brooklyn, NY, where she worked for nearly six years. There, her highly regarded whiskeys earned such accolades as Whisky Magazine’s Best Small Batch Bourbon 2022, Best in Class at the 2019 Whiskies of the World Awards, and a Double Gold Medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. She was also nominated for the Icons of Whiskey Master Distiller/Blender of the Year. Under Wicker, Widow Jane was the largest heirloom corn crop whiskey in the U.S. for several years.

Wicker’s other experience in the spirits industry includes lead distilling roles at Lexington Brewing & Distilling Company, Samson & Surrey, Limestone Branch, and Starlight Distillery. For years, she served as a consulting distiller at George Washington’s Distillery, the revival of our first president’s historic distillery at Mount Vernon, Virginia.

“I am so grateful to the team at Staghorn for this amazing opportunity to lead the whiskey making team at this beautiful new facility,” said Wicker. “Though this is one of the largest distilleries in Kentucky, my focus will remain on creating whiskeys using the hands-on, traditional craft disciplines I have honed over the past several decades.”

“When we were looking for a head distiller at Garrard County Distilling Co., we wanted someone with deep experience in time-honored distilling methods but also someone with an eye for what’s next. This made Lisa our obvious first choice,” said Ray Franklin, Founder of Staghorn.

Until the whiskey currently in production matures, Wicker will focus her attention on Staghorn’s All Nations brand, selecting and blending whiskey from the company’s more than 17,000 sourced-barrel inventory. Garrard County Distilling Co. plans to announce several new brands in 2024.

“High-rye and wheated bourbons are going to be the calling card for Garrard County Distilling Co., but I am also excited to explore rye whiskey, American single malt and some other emerging categories,” continued Wicker. “Key for me will be to have a premium whiskey for everyone, so expect a broad portfolio across multiple price points, from your daily sipper to the bottle you pull out for special occasions.”

Located 30 minutes south of Lexington, the 210-acre Garrard County Distilling Co. site includes the 50,000+ sq ft distillery, as well as two 20,000 sq ft rickhouses, with plans for a total of 24 aging warehouses by 2030, each holding nearly 25,000 barrels. A visitor center with tasting room and restaurant is scheduled to open by the end of this year. This is the first commercial distillery in the formerly dry county since the 1800s.

Bruichladdich Distillery Reveals New Luxury Redefined Range Featuring First Eighteen- & Thirty-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whiskies

The high age statement whiskies are taken from landmark moments in the distillery's recent history, charting its renaissance since 2001

The single malts feature an industry-first, fully recyclable bespoke outer wrap that align with the distillery's sustainable commitments

NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2024  Today, Bruichladdich Distillery has launched The Bruichladdich Eighteen and The Bruichladdich Thirty as part of the new Luxury Redefined range. It is the first of the brand's permanent high age statement whiskies for the Bruichladdich brand. Conceived, distilled, matured, and bottled only on the Hebridean island of Islay, the aged expressions are the liquid embodiment of the distillery's pioneering past and steadfast commitment to the future.

The Bruichladdich Eighteen
The first 18-year-old single malt in the Bruichladdich portfolio, The Bruichladdich Eighteen is a true coming-of-age bottling. When the distillery was reopened in 2001, the Bruichladdich team set course to reconnect land and dram, championing its raw ingredients, introducing the concept of terroir to the whisky world, and supporting the local community.

In pursuit of flavor and to support the agricultural community on Islay, Bruichladdich began working with one farmer in 2004 to raise a crop of locally grown barley. This pioneering trial has expanded to include 20 farming partners today who grow over 50% of the distillery's barley for total production.

"18 years ago, we distilled spirit from locally grown barley and our passion to diversify and champion our growing program has never wavered," said Head Distiller Adam Hannett. "Every element of The Bruichladdich Eighteen – from the specific harvest and barely varietals used, to the exact casks it has matured in – is fully traceable. At Bruichladdich Distillery, we're committed to making delicious whisky with real provenance that benefits the community – and The Bruichladdich Eighteen is the embodiment of this ethos."

Matured exclusively on Islay in primarily ex-Bourbon casks and bottled at 50% ABV, The Bruichladdich Eighteen is the epitome of the brand's signature, unpeated house style. Full-bodied and beautifully fragrant with notes of honey, butterscotch, and citrus orange open on the nose, and a medley of tropical fruits and toasted mellow oak lingering on the palate.

The Bruichladdich Thirty
The Bruichladdich Thirty is the story of the distillery's resurrection. Bruichladdich almost ended in the late 20th century when the doors to the distillery were forced to close in 1994. Over the next seven years, the two remaining staff safeguarded the casks which continued to mature in the depths of the warehouses, before the distillery was reopened in 2001.

"The Bruichladdich Thirty has been distilled using these legacy – almost lost – casks, capturing a pivotal moment in time for the distillery," explains Adam Hannett. "This 30-year-old single malt not only celebrates the resurrection of our Victorian distillery but pays homage to the men who laid down this spirit three decades ago."

The Bruichladdich Thirty has spent the entirety of its maturation life in handpicked, exceptionally rare ex-Bourbon casks. A limited and refined single malt Scotch whisky, The Bruichladdich Thirty is bottled at 43.2% ABV, bringing the sweetness of toasted oak, honey, and soft vanilla to the fore. Delicate yet complex, a hint of dark chocolate complements the spirit's elegant floral profile while the gentle influence of sea air lingers – a subtle nod to the whisky's all Islay maturation.

Challenging traditional perceptions of modern luxury, the prestige bottlings feature an industry-first bespoke, sustainable outer wrap. Brought to life by James Cropper, a global market leader in advanced materials and paper products, the lightweight outer package is made from fully recyclable paper pulp and perfectly molded to the shape of the Bruichladdich proprietary bottle. The packaging is completely plastic-free and produced using 100% green energy, demonstrating that premium single malt Scotch whisky can be both sustainable and aesthetically beautiful.

Furthermore, aligning with the B Corp distillery's commitment to reduce its packaging and waste, the Luxury Redefined series is housed in the brand's new decanter-style proprietary bottle. The new bottle contains an average of 60% recycled glass content, is lighter in weight, and features an elegant glass closure.

The Bruichladdich Eighteen and Thirty are available at specialty whisky retailers and are priced at $179.99 and $1,999.99 respectively per 750mL bottle.

About Bruichladdich Distillery
Bruichladdich Distillery (pronounced \brook-LAH-dee\) is situated on the Hebridean island of Islay. It distills three unique single malt Scotch whiskies:

  • Bruichladdich, unpeated Islay single malt Scotch whisky
  • Port Charlotte, heavily peated Islay single malt Scotch whisky
  • Octomore, the world's most heavily peated Scotch whisky series

Ever since the distillery's reopening in 2001, Bruichladdich has continued to bolster its Islay-centric approach by keeping as many of its operations on the island as possible. The distillery installed an on-site bottling hall in 2003, first grew Islay barley in 2004 (now making up 52% of annual production in 2023) and have since added additional warehousing to ensure all single malts are conceived, distilled, matured and bottled solely on the island.

In 2020, Bruichladdich became the first whisky and gin distillery in Europe to become B Corp certified – putting people and planet in line with profit.  In 2023 the distillery successfully completed the mandatory B Corp recertification process, scoring 100.7 points.

THE GLENLIVET INTRODUCES THE GLENLIVET RUM AND BOURBON FUSION CASK SELECTION WITH A ONE-OF-A-KIND TASTE EXPERIENCE

With a taste transformed by fusion, The Glenlivet's new category-first innovation breaks boundaries and sets new standards in single malt scotch whisky

NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2024 - The Glenlivet, the iconic Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, today announced the addition of The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection to its portfolio of award-winning single malt Scotch whiskies. A category-first innovation, the new expression offers an elevated, one-of-a-kind taste experience by selectively finishing1 The Glenlivet's iconic single malt Scotch whisky in bespoke casks that are uniquely crafted by fusing dismantled rum and bourbon barrels. The launch of The Glenlivet Fusion Cask Rum comes as the #1 single malt scotch whisky2 brand continues to challenge conventions and set new standards of excellence within the single malt category.

In a first for Scotch, The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection has been expertly finished in bespoke casks crafted from a combination of first-fill rum and bourbon barrels to deliver a distinctive single malt taste experience. These hand-selected barrels have been dismantled and reassembled by expert coopers into one bespoke cask, creating a harmonious fusion of luscious fruit and caramel-toffee notes. This luxurious new depth of flavor elevates The Glenlivet's signature fruity house style. The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection offers aromas of orange, vanilla custard, caramel, coconut and zest of lemon, notes of juicy apricot and peach, fresh apples, toffee-covered bananas and subtle cinnamon spice on the palate, and a sweet and smooth finish with enduring notes of orange.

"This category-first innovation continues our commitment and 200-year legacy of pushing boundaries in whisky," said Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet Cask Expert. "As a team of makers at The Glenlivet, we work closely with our partners at the cooperage to ensure the handmade casks are of the highest quality, and this intricate dismantling and reassembling process to create new bespoke casks ensures a distinctive and expertly-crafted finish."

Balmforth and the team of makers at The Glenlivet were drawn to the idea of a fusion cask finish – taking two separate flavors from outside The Glenlivet's home in Scotland and bringing them together to create a taste experience that is one-of-a-kind for Scotch. With an unconventional process, expertly crafted finish and distinctive technique, The Glenlivet Fusion Cask is a testament to The Glenlivet's spirit of craftmanship and innovation. This spirit, which dates back to 1824 when The Glenlivet founder George Smith became the first distiller to secure a legal whisky distilling license in the parish of Glenlivet, continues to inspire our makers today, paying homage to the brand's legacy whilst forever moving forwards.

"The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask is a welcome addition to our portfolio as we continue our journey to push the single malt category forward," said Johan Radojewski, Vice President Marketing - Scotch, Irish & Prestige Whisk(e)y, Pernod Ricard USA. "Prestige spirits drinkers in the US are seeking unique and elevated taste experiences, and The Glenlivet Fusion Cask proudly delivers on that demand as we pioneer new depths of flavor through our commitment to craftmanship and innovation."

The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection is launching February 2024 in the US, as the iconic single malt Scotch whisky commences its bicentennial celebrations, marking 200 years of redefining traditions and moving the single malt Scotch whisky category forward. This unique whisky is the first in The Glenlivet Fusion Cask Series and joins The Glenlivet's remarkable range of prestigious single malts.
