The Balvenie Releasing 6th Batch In Handcrafted Tun 1401 Series

imageNEW YORK, Oct. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/jm/ -- The Balvenie, the world's most handcrafted Single Malt Scotch Whisky, introduces another exceptional whisky in the celebrated Tun 1401 range, The Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6, available in most states nationwide beginning October 2012. Crafted by the industry's longest-serving Malt Master, David Stewart, the limited-edition Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 is the second batch to be released exclusively in the United States.

Inspired by and produced in one of the oldest warehouses at The Balvenie Distillery, Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 features liquid that has matured in nine different casks. The special vatting is a combination of seven traditional whisky casks and two sherry butts, finished in the legendary Tun 1401 – a traditional oak marrying vessel, in which the finest aged casks from the distillery warehouses are combined. The ages of the rare casks span a number of decades and have been hand-selected by David Stewart and cared for by the distillery's onsite team of coopers.

'The Balvenie is privileged to have some the rarest whisky maturing at our distillery," said David Stewart, Balvenie Malt Master. "The Balvenie is unique among whiskies in that it maintains complete control of all the rare crafts that go into creating our special single malt Scotch whisky. Five rare crafts and a long wait have gone into making the complex Tun 1401 Batch 6, and it is important that this single malt meets the expectations of what has become a sought after release for The Balvenie drinker and whisky enthusiasts in the United States."

The sixth batch in the Tun 1401 series is an unrepeatable marriage of single malt that is fragrant and fruity with barley sugar sweetness and soft vanilla. The liquid is sweet at the start, followed by a luscious explosion of tangy citrus and gentle spices. Notes of honey combined with rich vanilla syrup and hints of oak tannin give a rich finish with a lingering sweetness.

The Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 has an ABV of 49.8% and a recommended retail price of $250.00.

The first batch of Tun 1401 was released in 2011, for sale only at The Balvenie Speyside Distillery while other batches have been available in select markets around the world. The US exclusive release of Tun 1401 Batch 6 follows the award winning Tun 1401 Batch 3, which won the IWSC Trophy and Gold medal in 2011. Judges were impressed with the liquid's intensely aromatic and beautifully balanced flavors, proclaiming it a very interesting whisky.

Jim Beam Growing Kilbeggan Distillery

From Shanken:

Beam Inc. is aiming to capitalize on growing global interest in the Irish whiskey category by touting its Kilbeggan Distillery as a top Irish whiskey tourism destination. Visitor numbers at Kilbeggan are up 40% so far in 2012, against Beam’s earlier projection of a 25% increase for this year. Beam has been investing in what it calls the Kilbeggan Distillery Experience, including restoring the distillery’s ancient waterwheel and plans to revamp its tasting bar and gift shop areas. A new website and digital marketing campaign are also being developed to help drive tourism and interest around Kilbeggan, for which Beam says it has increased marketing spend fivefold since acquiring parent company Cooley Distillery late last year.

Buffalo Trace Releasing Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr Small Batch

Sazerac’s Buffalo Trace Distillery is set to release Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey. The limited availability 100-proof Bourbon whiskey will be released in November at $39.99 per 750-ml. bottle. It’s the sixth under the E. H. The series was launched in early 2011 to honor former distillery owner E. H. Taylor, Jr.

Teeling Whiskey Launches Hybrid Malt

From Shanken:

Jack Teeling, former managing director of Ireland’s Cooley Distillery (which was acquired by Beam in December for $95 million), has unveiled the first whiskey from his new project, Teeling Whiskey Company (TWC). TWC is looking to engage adventurous whiskey consumers with a new line of “Hybrid Malts,” made from marrying malt whiskies from around the world to create “a fusion of styles and flavors.” Edition No. 1 in the Hybrid Malt series is a blend of single malt Irish whiskey from Cooley and a 10-year-old single malt from Scotland’s Bruichladdich, which have been married for eight years in oak.

Only 1,200 (700-ml.) bottles of the non-chill-filtered Edition No. 1 (44.1% abv) were produced, and none of this first batch will make its way to the U.S. However, Teeling tells Shanken News Daily that the company is “looking at potentially marrying Irish and American whiskies for Edition No. 2 and planning on bottling that in the 750-ml. format,” with a price between $50-$60 a bottle. “Over the coming months we’ll release a range of other products that will further expand consumer choice and challenge existing perceptions of Irish whiskey,” he added.

Chivas Brothers Planning New Speyside Distillery

From Shanken:

Pernod Ricard’s Chivas Brothers has announced plans to build a new malt whisky distillery in Scotland’s Speyside region to buttress supply for its blended Scotch brands—which include Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s, Clan Campbell, Passport, Something Special and 100 Pipers—in the coming years. The proposed facility would be located on the banks of the River Spey near Carron, at the site of the silent Imperial Distillery, which has been out of use since 1998 and was acquired by Chivas Brothers as part of Pernod Ricard’s joint purchase (with Beam) of Allied Domecq in 2005. In a statement today, Chivas said, “The intention is to make the external façade blend in with the surrounding riverside scene and follow vernacular codes of the region.”

The proposed move, which is only in the planning stages, is part of Chivas’s recently announced initiative to commit $60 million annually to expanded whisky production over the next several years. Other current projects include the re-opening of the Glen Keith distillery and the expansion of four existing Speyside distilleries: Glenallachie, Glentauchers, Tormore and Longmorn. Those investments will help boost Chivas’s malt whisky distillation capacity by 25% by April of next year, the company says.

Pernod, like Diageo—which has earmarked $1.54 billion for Scotch whisky investments of its own over the next five years—is building to meet future demand, as relatively young Scotch markets like Brazil, Russia, China and India continue to develop at a rapid pace. Chivas Regal now sells more than 2 million cases across Asia, Chivas Bros. international marketing director Eric Benoist tells Shanken News Daily, and is also on the rise in emerging areas like Russia, India and Turkey. Overall Chivas Regal rose 7% to nearly 5 million cases globally in the 12 months through June.

Meanwhile, Ballantine’s rose 4.7% to 6.5 million cases last year. Benoist says the brand has been able to offset tough conditions in mature markets like Spain by “winning over new consumers in emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, Mexico and Poland.” Gains in Brazil, Mexico and Russia were also crucial to the Passport brand’s progress last year, as it leapt 19% to 1.1 million cases globally. Something Special, a key brand in South America’s expanding Scotch sector, saw 15% net sales growth in the year through June, Benoist added.
