Talisker Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Billion Oyster Project Announce Second-Year Partnership To Help Restore One Billion Oysters To New York Harbor
The nonprofit and Single Malt Scotch Whisky are ramping up shell collection efforts, including support of a local tax credit bill that incentivizes shell recycling among New York State restaurants
NEW YORK, May 26, 2021 Talisker Single Malt Scotch Whisky – made by the sea on Scotland's Isle of Skye - and New York City nonprofit Billion Oyster Project today announced the extension of their partnership into 2021, marking a second year of collaboration on oyster reef restoration efforts and public education initiatives aimed at restoring one billion oysters - and a 'wild spirit' - to New York Harbor by 2035.
Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8901051-talisker-single-malt-scotch-whisky-billion-oyster-project-partnership-restore-new-york-harbor/
Talisker is the lead sponsor of Billion Oyster Project's Shell Collection Program, a cornerstone of the nonprofit's work and an essential recycling process for the resource. Oyster shells provide the base material for oyster reefs, which offer a home for young oysters to grow and hundreds of species in New York Harbor to thrive. Talisker will support Billion Oyster Project's ongoing shell collection operations, which are expected to collect more than 200,000 pounds of oyster shells from 50 NYC restaurants and divert them from landfills in 2021.
This year, Talisker is also joining Billion Oyster Project in supporting Senate Bill S4741 in New York State. If passed, the bill will award restaurants that donate shells to oyster reef restoration organizations a small tax credit per pound of shell donated. In addition to supporting this crucial environmental initiative, the tax credit will help restaurants who have struggled due to closures and restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill is currently being considered by state legislators, so Talisker and Billion Oyster Project urge you to click here to take a few simple steps to support the bill before the State Senate enters recess on June 10.
The Talisker distillery is battered by wind and waves on the rugged coastline on the Isle of Skye in Scotland where oysters are locally farmed and enjoyed. The waters from the nearby sea create the signature maritime and briny notes of Talisker – making this the perfect Scotch for oyster pairing. As an homage to its home by the sea and deep-rooted love of oysters, Talisker is honored to continue partnering with Billion Oyster Project for a second year to preserve the oceans, an essential resource for both bivalves and its whisky, and provide support for local NYC restaurants.
During the partnership's inaugural year – and amidst the COVID-19 pandemic – Talisker supported Billion Oyster Project in:
- Collecting 120,000 shells from more than 30 operating bars and restaurants in NYC
- *Billion Oyster Project's Shell Collection Program was temporarily suspended from March – August 2020
- Educating over 14,000 members via digital newsletters and social content
- Co-hosting 7 consumer events – including virtual experiences following nationwide social-distancing guidelines
- Introducing a new, co-branded Shell Collection Program truck
"The entire Talisker team is honored to renew and deepen our partnership with Billion Oyster Project for a second year knowing we've made a tangible impact on New York City's oyster reefs," says Jamie Young, Director of Single Malts for Diageo North America. "Every day, our whisky is influenced by the vast ocean that surrounds us on the Isle of Skye, much like the oysters living in New York Harbor. The sea forms an important part of who we are, and we believe it is our goal to encourage people to embrace the exhilaration of the ocean whilst awakening a desire to protect and restore it for future generations in any way they can."
"Thanks to New Yorkers' love for oysters, shells are plentiful, but sorting, collecting, transporting and storing this valuable resource takes significant effort," said Pete Malinowski, Executive Director of Billion Oyster Project. "Continued support from Talisker will enable us to rebuild our shell collection program, restore more oyster reefs, and engage more restaurants and community members in creating a healthier Harbor for all New Yorkers to enjoy. We're grateful for their ongoing commitment to our work."
With the help of volunteers and partners since 2014, Billion Oyster Project has:
- Collected over 1,600,000 pounds of used oyster shells
- Planted more than 47,000,000 oysters in New York City waters
- Engaged more than 10,000 volunteers across various community projects
- Installed 15 oyster reefs across more than 12 acres

ABOUT BILLION OYSTER PROJECT
Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit organization on a mission to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Why oysters? Their reefs have the ability to filter water, provide habitat for many marine species, and help shield NYC shorelines from storm damage. Founded on the belief that restoration without education is temporary and observing that learning outcomes improve when students have the opportunity to work on real restoration projects, collaborating with public schools is fundamental to Billion Oyster Project's work. Billion Oyster Project designs STEM curriculum through the lens of oyster restoration for New York City schools, engages The Urban Assembly New York Harbor students in large-scale restoration projects, collects discarded oyster shells from 75 New York City restaurants, and engages thousands of volunteers. The project has planted 47 million oysters and installed 15 reef sites so far, with 6,000+ students and nearly 10,000 volunteers. Penderyn 10 Year Old Ex-Ruby Port Single Cask (No. 178)
Penderyn, Wales – May 25, 2021: The award-winning Penderyn Distillery, which will open a new flagship distillery on June 1, has announced the release of a new Penderyn Single Cask Single Malt Welsh whisky, exclusively for the American market: Penderyn 10 Year Old Ex-Ruby Port Single Cask (No. 178). The new 231-bottle Single Cask expression is solely available in the U.S. through importer ImpEx Beverages and builds on the legacy of quality and uniqueness that is synonymous with the distillery’s much anticipated Single Cask releases.
Penderyn 10 Year Old Ex-Ruby Port Single Cask (No. 178, 60.06% ABV, RRP US$150) was filled into cask in 2011 and bottled in 2021. After spending 2.5 years in a Buffalo Trace Bourbon cask and 7.5 years in a Ruby Port cask, the result is a nose of red fruits with citrus zest, oily hazelnuts, and dark chocolate, together with dates, figs, and plums. The taste is an oily vanilla sweetness alongside woodland berries such as raspberries and wild strawberries, mixed with plum jam with oak tannins and cinnamon spices. The finish is a fruity sweetness leading to an oaky dryness, with some dark chocolate and black coffee bitterness. The limited expression of 231 bottles can be found on store shelves in CA, AK, TX, MA, NY, CO, IL, and mid-Atlantic states.
Aista Phillips, Master Blender

Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Partners with Historic HBCU, Kentucky State University, to Help Propel Diversity within the Spirits Industry and Support the Kentucky Community
Bulleit to award $25,000 in annual scholarships to benefit students in need in the Master of Agriculture Sciences in Environmental Studies Program at Kentucky State University, furthering the brand's commitment to a more sustainable future
SHELBYVILLE, Ky., May 24, 2021 Bulleit Frontier Whiskey is proud to announce a new partnership with Kentucky State University (KSU), to provide financial aid to talented students in need with an annual scholarship of $25,000 to the Master of Agriculture Sciences in Environmental Studies (MES) program. As a brand focused on building community, Bulleit intends with the annual scholarship program to promote diversity in the spirits industry and provide opportunities for future leaders from underrepresented backgrounds in the brand's home state of Kentucky.
Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Partners with Historic HBCU, Kentucky State University, to Help Propel Diversity within the Spirits Industry and Support the Kentucky Community
"We hope to make a lasting impact as we provide resources, funding and support to the next generation of pioneers through our partnership with Kentucky State University, an institution that has been an educational pillar for over a century in the Commonwealth," said Ricky Collett, Global & US Brand Director, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey. "This annual scholarship is a part of our commitment to help build a pipeline of diverse talent into the spirits industry by supporting the sustainability leaders of tomorrow."
The Kentucky State University MES program is designed to cut across traditional academic disciplines and colleges, and to provide sound and effective graduate education and research on important environmental issues with a focus in and around the Kentucky community. Bulleit continues the brand's commitment to a more sustainable future by supporting pioneers like the MES graduate students, who are pushing the frontier of sustainability and the alternative energy job economy in Kentucky forward.
"We appreciate this generous donation from Bulleit and the opportunities it will create to ensure some of our most talented and brightest students are given the chance to become future leaders regardless of their socioeconomic background, status or race," said Dr. M. Christopher Brown II, President, Kentucky State University. "With this partnership we're helping remove a financial barrier that prevents students from getting across the finish line."
The Bulleit scholarship is an addition to the broader $10 million commitment that Diageo North America announced earlier this year to fund permanent endowments at 25 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to develop future leaders and help shape a more equitable society. One million of that donation went to KSU, proudly making it the largest donation in school's history. The Bulleit grant will be distributed within the KSU institution through a fund structure established to provide $25,000 to support students in the MES program annually for the next five years.
With a goal of making a long term and sustainable impact in helping to promote diversity in the beverage alcohol industry, Bulleit aspires to partner with KSU on additional community-driven initiatives beyond the monetary MES scholarship including:
- Working with KSU to actively recruit candidates for current positions and internship opportunities across Bulleit distillery sites, including the new Diageo Lebanon, Kentucky distillery, which is expected to be carbon neutral once operational later this year.
- Educational and enriching immersive experiences hosted by Bulleit for KSU MES graduate students and faculty of legal drinking age throughout the year including in-depth distillery tours, on-site research opportunities, lunch and learns, guest speakers and more.
- Various community activations including alumni events, and a fall campus clean up along M.L.K. Jr. Blvd in Frankfort, Kentucky in partnership with KSU and Keep America Beautiful as part of the larger Diageo Community Improvement Grant Program.
This year Diageo North America joined the Congressional HBCUs Partnership Challenge to advocate for positive policies and share best practices for partnering with the Caucus, other organizations and these higher education institutions.
