From Shanken:

Aiming to extend its upswing and raise its profile in the U.S.  market, Tullamore Dew has unveiled new packaging that’s now hitting U.S.  store shelves. Tullamore Dew’s new bottle design emphasizes the  heritage of the brand throughout the design by giving founder Daniel E.  Williams’ initials “D.E.W.” more prominence within the product name.  Additionally, “1829”, the year the original Tullamore distillery was  founded, is embossed on the package.

Since acquiring Tullamore Dew in 2010, William Grant & Sons has  made a concerted effort to accelerate the brand’s growth in the U.S. The  new packaging follows last year’s launch of Tullamore Dew’s “Irish  True” ad campaign in the market. “Tullamore Dew is a brand that hasn’t  had a clear point of view or a lot of investment behind it,” William  Grant & Sons North America managing director Simon Hunt recently  told Shanken News Daily. “We’ve increased that investment and started  communicating the concept of ‘Irish True’—which goes to the heart of  what Tullamore Dew is all about.”

While it’s the second-largest Irish whiskey brand worldwide,  Tullamore Dew is dwarfed by both market leader Jameson and second-ranked  Bushmills in the U.S.—the world’s biggest Irish whiskey market. Even  after years of solid growth, Tullamore Dew’s yearly sales are still well  shy of 100,000 cases. Last year, the brand rose by 7% to 76,000 cases

Jura Whiskey Celebrates It’s Roots w/Finding Superstition Sweepstakes

NORTH MIAMI, Fla., Sept. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/jm/ -- From a land steeped in superstitions and lore, Jura Whisky is giving its U.S. fans a way to explore some well-known (and not-so-well-known) superstitions for a chance to win a trip to the mystical Isle of Jura in Scotland with its "Finding Superstition" sweepstakes. Jura, an award-winning single malt whisky, invites fans to explore its website and find the "superstitions" hidden within, and in the process, learn a bit about what makes the Isle of Jura such a special place.

Once you register on the Jura website, you simply scan the interactive island landscape, find the 13 superstitions and click on each to reveal a bit of superstitious wisdom. If luck is on your side and you find all the superstitions, you'll be entered for a chance to win a 5-day, 4-night trip for two from the U.S. to experience the Isle of Jura yourself.

"There is a strong spirit and deep beauty to our small island of Jura, and the people here are some of the warmest and most welcoming on the planet. For those fans with a keen-enough eye to spot all the superstitions on our website, we look forward to the chance to welcome you to the island personally and introduce you to some of the special magic that makes the Isle of Jura a treasure to us all," said Willie Cochrane, distillery manager for Jura whisky.

In addition to entering the sweepstakes on the website, entry forms can be found at participating liquor retail stores, as well as on-premise at bars and restaurants that carry Jura whisky. The sweepstakes runs through November 9, and the grand prize winner will be selected at random following the completion of the sweepstakes. Additionally, weekly prize drawing winners will receive Jura merchandise. All details of the contest can be found at www.jurawhisky.com/superstitionUSA. Entrants must be of legal drinking age and must register on the Jura whisky website before entering the competition.

The Influence of Superstition
Jura, a tiny isle off the dramatic west coast of Scotland, is an island wrapped in superstition. There's the belief that you should never cut peat before May. There are some who say you should always build haystacks in a clockwise direction. This "Finding Superstition" sweepstakes is meant to celebrate the influence of superstition and the role it plays in making Jura whisky what it is.

Even Jura whisky's classic bottlings, known for their distinguished and subtle flavors, are inspired by superstitions and prophecies held close by the people on the Isle of Jura.

  • Each bottle of Jura Superstition, a lightly peated whisky crafted from a selection of the finest aged Jura single malt whiskies, sports an Ankh cross. It is believed that pouring from the bottle with the cross in the center of your palm is a ritual that will bring good health and good fortune.
  • Jura Prophecy is inspired by the prophecy of the one-eyed Campbell, the last of an island family whose fate was foretold by an old wise seer from Jura.
  • Origin 10 is the 10-year-old whisky that started the Jura journey, so each bottle carries the traditional Celtic symbol for birth, beginning and the forces of nature.
  • The whisky of choice for the people of Jura, Diurachs' Own 16 year old, upholds the name of the island's inhabitants, and each bottle is adorned with the symbol of the Diurachs.

The island itself is famed for its small, close-knit community of fewer than 200 people, and treasured for its mystical stone circles, standing stones, ruined castles and Iron Age forts. And the Jura whisky distillery is at the center of the island's heritage. The walls of the Distillery Visitor Centre are adorned with photos of Diurachs (the Gaelic name for the people of Jura) past and present, who have all played their part in contributing to the island's famous spirit.

Glenfiddich - Unveils New Limited Edition Expression: Malt Masters Edition

image

From PRNewsWire:

NEW YORK, Sept. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Glenfiddich, the world's most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, releases Glenfiddich Malt Master's Edition. Only 18,000 bottles of this exceptional limited-edition, created by Malt Master Brian Kinsman, will be available in the United States.

Glenfiddich Malt Master's Edition encapsulates the fifth-generation family-owned distillery's innovative casking techniques. It is the first expression to adopt the double maturation process, delivering a whisky that is complex in taste and flavor imparted from two different woods. Using the highest quality of both Sherry and Refill Bourbon casks throughout the Glenfiddich range, this rare liquid reflects the distillery's historic 125 years of creating the most sought after whiskies in the world.

As Malt Master, Kinsman is in charge of the Glenfiddich's pioneering whisky making process, from cask selection and overseeing the marrying of different ages and characters to managing the unique maturation process within the warehouse in the Dufftown, Scotland. A chemist by training, Kinsman became Glenfiddich Malt Master in December 2009, having first served an eight year apprenticeship under his predecessor David Stewart, who held the post for 35 years and is currently the industry's longest serving Malt Master.

"It is a true honor to be the sixth Malt Master at Glenfiddich during the distillery's milestone 125th Anniversary year," said Malt Master Brian Kinsman. "Glenfiddich established the single malt Scotch whisky category in 1963, when we became the first distillery to successfully export outside Scotland. I am proud to launch the Glenfiddich Malt Master's Edition as a tribute to the pioneering history that goes into each and every bottle of whisky we produce. The aim with all of our limited edition expressions is to showcase the distillery's special quality of the liquid, which this rare innovation captures so beautifully."

Glenfiddich Malt Master's Edition delivers a rich, ruby-red whisky with a complex nose that intermingles damp earth and whisky-soaked wood with deep vanilla and a touch of smoky embers. At first taste, the whisky has a sherbet zing which then slowly takes on a spicy, fruity character of plum and cherry with hints of toasted almond and wedding cake. The finish is silky and smooth.

Glenfiddich Malt Master's Edition has an ABV of 43% and will be available at select retailers starting in September 2012, with a retail price of $79.99.
