Switchback Spirits Wins Gold at 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Switchback Spirits Wins Gold at 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Burlington, VT
– Essential Vermont Malt Whiskey, part of the Switchback Spirits lineup from Switchback Brewing Co., has been awarded a Gold Medal at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), the most prestigious and influential competition in the global spirits industry.

Now in its 25th year, the 2025 SFWSC drew over 5,000 entries from around the world, making it one of the largest and most competitive editions to date. The results were officially announced, celebrating products that exemplify excellence, quality, and distinction.

Judges praised Essential Vermont Malt Whiskey with the following tasting notes:

“This malt whiskey opens with an aromatic blend of bright citrus, honey, and tropical notes on the nose, giving way to a balanced palate of juicy orange, floral character, a hint of herbaceous funk, oak, and concludes with a sharp, lingering finish that reinforces its bold profile.”

Essential Vermont Malt Whiskey began as a collaborative project between Switchback Spirits and Split Spirits, launched during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. With thousands of gallons of beer originally brewed and packaged for Vermont's busy ski season and St. Patrick’s Day 2020 at risk of going to waste, the teams partnered to distill approximately 1,500 kegs—equivalent to 250,000 cans—of Switchback Ale at Split Spirits. The result is a uniquely Vermont whiskey that has been aging in new American oak barrels for over 3 years.

What started as a creative solution to a crisis grew into Switchback Spirits, an umbrella that now includes Essential Vermont Malt Whiskey and its equally distinct sibling, Essential Vermont Hopped Gin. This vibrant gin evokes notes of fresh flowers, herbs, and citrus. A crisp and bright aroma melds with warm spice and evergreen.

“This project came out of a difficult moment, but became something really meaningful and special,” said Switchback's Director of Marketing, Abbe Carroll. “Winning gold is a huge honor, and it’s a testament to the creativity and quality Vermont can bring to the spirits world. It’s incredible to see our effort recognized on such a major stage.”

Both Essential Vermont Malt Whiskey (46% ABV | 92 Proof) and Essential Vermont Hopped Gin (44% ABV | 88 Proof) are available statewide at 802 Spirits locations, at Split Spirits’ Middlebury Distillery, and at Switchback’s Beer Garden & Smokehouse in Burlington’s South End.

Equip Expo Announces New Small Batch Bourbon, Winning Name by Show Attendee

Equip Expo Announces New Small Batch Bourbon, Winning Name by Show Attendee

Equip Reserve 42: Backyard Blend Wins Award and Will Make Inaugural Debut in October

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 22, 2025- Equip Exposition announces its inaugural small batch bourbon, Equip Reserve 42: Backyard Blend, which will debut at Equip Exposition, being held October 21-24 at the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC). The special blend has already won a prestigious award from the American Distilling Institute.

The bourbon was named by Sam Meagher, owner of Sam I Am Outdoor Services, who has attended the blockbuster trade show annually since 2021 and submitted his idea for the name to a bourbon-naming contest run by Equip earlier this year.

"Take advantage of all it has to offer, not just equipment but the educational standpoint…"

Unveiled exclusively for Equip's 42nd show this October, Backyard Blend marks the start of a new show tradition. Two hundred thirty-two bottles will be made of Equip Reserve 42: Backyard Blend. Attendees will have a chance to sample it at the Louisville Tourism booth Wednesday, October 22 from 3 to 5 pm.

"We're very excited about our new bourbon blend, which is crafted by a Kentucky distiller. It celebrates our host state's legendary bourbon heritage, and it's very fitting that the name for it was submitted by one of our attendees," says Kris Kiser, President & CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), which owns and manages Equip Exposition, the international landscape, outdoor living, and equipment exposition, held each year in Louisville.

Meagher came up with the name Backyard Blend while talking with his wife, Mary McGowan Meagher. "I wanted something 'Equip Expo-y', lawn care related. Something catchy, with alliteration. The feeling that name gives you [is something] a lot of people in this industry could relate to … that sentiment and that moment."

The bourbon is already receiving awards and earned a Silver Medal from the American Distilling Institute's 2025 competition.

Meagher says the show is a can't-miss event for anyone in landscaping because of the knowledge it offers to help him grow his business and the community he's found there.

His advice for others: "Take advantage of all it has to offer, not just equipment but the educational standpoint — the classes you can learn from, the different vendors and your peers in the industry. You [can] find someone your same size, maybe a bit bigger, [talk about] where you want to go, and they'll take you under their wing and help you. It's really awesome, that community," says Meagher.

And he says there's value in bringing a team with you. "Bring your guys. They can gain knowledge of what companies can be," says Meagher. "It's become a tradition, a staple -- our Super Bowl, not just for equipment, but for networking and meeting people."

Last year the trade show drew more than 28,500 people, with landscapers and contractors seeking actionable and practical ideas to grow and expand their businesses.

Jameson Crested Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey

Jameson Crested Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey
46%-ABV 700ml.

About Jameson:

We’ve been proudly making our whiskey the Jameson way since 1780. As you can imagine, producing a premium Irish whiskey that has been enjoyed for over two centuries takes a lot. But don’t worry, we’ve distilled over 200 years of courage, craft and a collective appreciation for taste, into one short account. So here’s the secret behind our signature smoothness – our process and our people.

OUR PROCESS

Good things come in threes

Forget lucky number seven, our smoothness comes from our signature triple distillation process. It’s the method that Jameson Irish Whiskey built its reputation on and the legacy that our Head Distiller Kevin O’Gorman upholds to this day.

Inquisitive minds might be reading this wondering if quadruple distillation would be a step better. No, three is our magic number and we’re sticking with it.

INGREDIENTS

Locally Grown

Jameson Irish Whiskey is made by blending rich pot still whiskey made from both malted and unmalted barley, with the finest grain whiskey, both distilled 3 times for smoothness.
And while our barley is all grown locally in Ireland, our water comes from the Dungourney river, which flows right through our distillery. Which is fitting, because the word whiskey derives from the Irish “uisce beatha”, meaning ‘water of life’. Now, while our barley comes from up the road and our water comes from outside the window, maize is a sun-loving crop.

Ireland’s famous climate is anything but tropical, so that’s why we use a farmer in the South of France to provide us with all our non-genetically modified maize.

OUR COOPERS

Oak Aged

While Jameson is Irish through and through, our Head Cooper Ger Buckley turns to our friends in the United States and Spain to provide our casks.

Their previous life ageing bourbon and fortified wine, leaves them seasoned and ready to pass some of their toasted wood, vanilla and sweet sherry personality along to our whiskey.
So what allows Irish Whiskey to call itself Irish Whiskey?

MATURATION

Time in Barrel

So what allows Irish Whiskey to call itself Irish Whiskey?

Well, a pretty stringent law that states that a spirit must spend a minimum of three years maturing on the island of Ireland to be lucky enough to be able to call itself Irish.

Although the length of time we allow for maturation isn’t the same for every cask, 2% of our whiskey is lost to evaporation every year. This is called the Angel’s Share and after more than 230 years, we reckon it’s their round.

PRODUCTION

Grain to glass

At Jameson, we are proud to run a single distillery, which means we have full control over the production process, from grain to glass.

When it comes time for blending, Head Blender Billy Leighton only uses whiskeys that were reared on the grounds of our distillery. As a result, we’re able to produce a wide variety of different whiskeys, without having to knock on any other distillery doors. Many celebrated brands blend whiskey from multiple distilleries, so we’re not suggesting our way is superior, it’s just the way we like to do it.

ST. LOUIS, May 21, 2025  Bardstown, Kentucky-based Rebel Bourbon – the Official Bourbon of Richard Childress Racing (RCR) – teamed up with Childress Vineyards on the release of Rebel 100 Childress Vineyards Cabernet Franc Barrel Finish. This limited-release offering features Rebel's original time-honored wheated recipe, aged four years, finished in Childress Vineyards Cabernet Franc barrels and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). The result is a one-of-a-kind bourbon with unique flavor notes of sweet plums, honey and bright berries. An allocation of 500 cases (6-in) of Rebel 100 Childress Vineyards Cabernet Franc Barrel Finish will be available at North Carolina ABC stores and at Lux Row Distillers beginning this month at a minimum suggested retail price of $39.99 per 750mL bottle.

"We selected the Cabernet Franc barrels from Childress Vineyards because we wanted to craft a smooth, high-proof bourbon with tasting notes of sweet berry, oak, caramel, vanilla and spice," said Lux Row Distillers Master Distiller John Rempe. "Cabernet Franc was the perfect match for our wheated Rebel recipe, and the result is incredible."

Childress Vineyards features over 70 acres of vineyards and 15 varieties of European Vitis vinifera cultivars at two vineyard sites in North Carolina: Richard's Hampton Road Estate in Davidson County and Vineyard Crossing at the winery site. The terroir, with its combination of humid climate, long growing season and gravelly, red clay soil are the key natural features of Childress Vineyards, producing a broad range of over 30 wines to appeal to both the introductory palate and the seasoned taster.

"At Childress Vineyards, we take great pride in both our wines and our partnerships, especially with Rebel Bourbon," said Childress Vineyards Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth Brown. We knew Rebel would be the perfect fit for Childress Vineyards as we continue to innovate and grow, delivering unique experiences that celebrate both our craft and our shared commitment to excellence."

Earlier this year Rebel Bourbon announced the continuation of its sponsorship of Richard Childress Racing and driver Kyle Busch for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. In February, Rebel released Kyle Busch 108 Single Barrel Bourbon, a limited-edition release featuring hand-bottled barrels selected by Busch with the guidance of Rempe.

"From racing to winemaking, Richard and the RCR team embody the true spirit of being a Rebel," said Rebel Bourbon Brand Manager Philip Lux. "We're proud to once again team up with RCR and create a unique bourbon that is sure to make racing fans, wine lovers and bourbon aficionados take notice."

Childress Vineyards plans to mark the launch of Rebel 100 Childress Vineyards Cabernet Franc Barrel Finish with a private celebration.

Crown Royal Vanilla Flavored Whiskey

Crown Royal Vanilla Flavored Whiskey

Crown Royal Vanilla Flavored Whiskey 53%-ABV 750ml.

About Crown Royal:

In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth made history when they became the first reigning monarchs to visit Canada, arriving by boat and traveling the vast North American distance by train.

Upon hearing the historic news, a Canadian spirits entrepreneur set out to craft a whisky suited for the Royal Couple – an exceptionally generous gift fit for royalty. With perfection on his mind, he meticulously trialed more than 600 blends before outfitting the final product in a cut-glass decanter and regal purple bag with gold stitching. The whisky he presented to the King and Queen was an exquisitely smooth blend of roughly fifty whiskies which became known, fittingly, as Crown Royal.

The train carrying the monarchs was stocked with 10 cases of the royal blend and rumors of the unrivaled whisky fit for a King quickly spread. Crown Royal was released in the United States in the 1960s and has since become the top selling Canadian whisky.

To this day, every drop of Crown Royal is crafted to meet the same uncompromising standards, making it, to many discerning palates, the finest whisky of all.

OUR HISTORY

A lifetime of experience goes into every bottle of Crown Royal.

OUR HOME

Nestled along the western shore of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba lies the small village of Gimli.

OUR PROCESS

Fifty of the finest whiskies are meticulously blended to create the signature smoothness of Crown Royal.

Nestled on the edge of Lake Winnipeg, Crown Royal’s distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, is home to 1.5 million barrels of delicious whisky that sit patiently waiting to be shared with the world. One of Manitoba’s natural beauties, the town of Gimli hugs the western shoreline of one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes, with sandy beaches, an active harbor and the largest Icelandic population outside of Iceland.

The World's Most Admired Whiskey Announces 2025 Release of Michter's 10 Year Rye

The World's Most Admired Whiskey Announces 2025 Release of Michter's 10 Year Rye

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 20, 2025 Louisville based distiller Michter's will be releasing its highly acclaimed 10 Year Kentucky Straight Rye this June.

"Rye whiskey has deep roots in American whiskey history," commented Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco. "It fell out of favor for most of the 20th century when much of it was used as a blender in other whiskeys. The work of the bartenders in the on-premise community to show how great a good American rye is in cocktails was instrumental in bringing this exceptional whiskey category back."

Michter's releases whiskey according to the flavor profile of specific barrels rather than automatically upon their reaching a certain age. As a result of this protocol, Michter's whiskeys have often been matured longer than the age statement on the label. The barrels that comprise this release were deemed ready by Michter's Master Distiller Dan McKee and Michter's Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson.

Wilson observed that Michter's ryes are Kentucky style as opposed to many ryes from other U.S. states, "One of Michter's defining characteristics for our rye whiskey is the balance of the beautiful baking spice with fresh citrus and floral underpinned by notes of vanilla, caramel, chocolate and sweet oak. This Kentucky style rye differs from the styles from Indiana and other parts of the U.S., and it reveals a refined elegance and harmony of flavors."

A 92.8 proof (46.4% alcohol by volume) spirit, Michter's 10 Year Rye is a single barrel whiskey, and it has a suggested retail price of $210 in the U.S. McKee stated, "As someone who enjoys rye, I was excited to taste the barrels for this year's release. The flavor profile is exceptional."

In October 2024, Michter's became the first whiskey to be named in two consecutive years The World's Most Admired Whiskey by a vote of an international academy of voters announced by UK based Drinks International. Michter's has a rich and long legacy of offering traditional American whiskeys of uncompromising quality. With each of its limited production offerings aged to its peak maturity, Michter's highly acclaimed portfolio includes bourbon, rye, sour mash whiskey, and American whiskey.

Too Bold to Die: Old Commonwealth Distillery Revives Legendary D.H. Cromwell 15 Year Bourbon

Too Bold to Die: Old Commonwealth Distillery Revives Legendary D.H. Cromwell 15 Year Bourbon

A liquid homage to the incomparably rebellious and bawdy "Dirty Helen" Cromwell, this limited-release small batch expression launches this May.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky., May 15, 2025 -- In 2000, when Louisville liquor retailer Gordon Jackson won a full barrel of 15 year bourbon from Julian Van Winkle III, Jackson immediately knew how he wanted to bottle and sell the exquisite whiskey: under the name "Dirty Helen" Cromwell.

A liquid homage to the incomparably rebellious and bawdy Dirty Helen Cromwell, this 15 year bourbon launches this May.

Helen Cromwell—Jackson rightly believed—is a legend. Born in 1886, Cromwell lived a hedonistic life of reckless abandon: sex worker, madam, speakeasy operator, and finally, from the 1920s through the 1940s, the iron-fisted proprietor of Milwaukee's infamous Sunflower Inn. There, Cromwell only served whiskey—Scotch or bourbon—and a pile of foul-mouth insults to anyone who asked for alternative imbibes, hence the sobriquet "Dirty Helen." Enamored with Cromwell's brazen, unrepentant escapades, Jackson believed Van Winkle's first single barrel bourbon the perfect embodiment to honor the queen of grit.

A scant 72 bottles of D.H. Cromwell—the federal government rejected the originally proposed name of "Dirty Helen Cromwell"—were produced, a wheated 15 year Kentucky bourbon that had an unusual proof of 92.4. An artistic friend of Jackson's designed the askew label, including the letters "VGS" at the bottom, an old wine term that stands for "Very Good S**t," a phrase Jackson found particularly fitting in this application. Priced around $60, Jackson recalls the bottles moving slowly, though all eventually sold. Today, remaining D.H. Cromwell bottles hammer for more than $18,000 each at auction.

Now, 25 years after its initial release, Old Commonwealth is pleased to announce D.H. Cromwell is back.

Creating Old Commonwealth's 2025 D.H. Cromwell 15 Year Bourbon

For the executive team at Old Commonwealth, the exploits of Cromwell (more on those momentarily) and the striking aesthetics of the bottle were key factors in the decision to resurrect this revered brand. "Every Helen story makes you laugh. She was so wonderfully unapologetic and brash," says Zachary Joseph, president of operations for Old Commonwealth. "That's what we think about our Old Commonwealth whiskey: pure and bold. Helen would've been a fan of our whiskey, just as we're immense fans of her incredible life story."

For whiskey befitting Cromwell's name, Joseph and his team sourced 15 year Kentucky straight bourbon from a heritage distiller. After trying more than 100 barrels for half a year, four barrels were deemed worthy. Unlike the original wheater, the 2025 D.H. Cromwell bourbon has a mashbill of 75 percent corn, 13 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley. Where it was made, per Joseph, is less important than what happens to the whiskey after procurement that makes it special and bespoke.

"We're harkening back to earlier iterations of our facility, when all the attention was on blending and finishing elements," Joseph says. "The process for D.H. Cromwell was to re-barrel the bourbon in new, charred oak barrels from Kelvin Cooperage for six months," says Joseph, "giving it that fruity, red candy note we associate with vintage whiskey."

After blending, it was sampled at cask strength, then at 110 proof, and finally at 106 proof; the latter won out. "There's a harmony at 106 that was exemplary," says Joseph. "In several blind tastings, the 106 proof sample won unanimously."

In addition to the final blend tasting superior to the individual single barrels, "we want more people to have access to our products," says Andrew English, co-founder of Old Commonwealth. "We hear our fans asking for higher volumes. We're listening and trying to accommodate."

2025 D.H. Cromwell 15 Year Bourbon // Tasting Notes

Nose: The dark copper liquid kicks off with an earthy, dusty aroma, akin to the first scents you get walking into an old rickhouse, before yielding to sweet vanilla buttercream, candied orange zest, clove, allspice, and a whiff of licorice. Let it sit for a spell to coax out stone fruit notes—deep and rich, cherry Fruit Roll-Up, dark chocolate, and leather on the very end of the nose. It's balanced and the combination of scents give off pure dusty whiskey vibes.

Palate: The light liquid dances around your tongue, first hitting in the back, then moving to the front. Sweet vanilla cream hits first, then sweet and savory meld; fresh baked cherry pie with a buttery graham cracker crust; ginger snap cookie with orange zest icing. It's luscious and juicy, leaving your mouth watering for another sip, no tannins sucking your cheeks together here. Despite not being oily, it coats the mouth perfectly.

Finish: The protracted finish is dark chocolate and cherry candy, and it goes on for days, settling into cherry syrup at the very end.

From Prohibition Rebel to Whiskey Icon: Inside Helen Cromwell's Wild Life

The antics detailed in Cromwell's 1966 autobiography are as incredible as the book's title: "Dirty Helen: A Zany, Wonderful, Unconventional Ex-Madam and Tavern-Keeper Tells of Her Adventures, the Fascinating People She Has Known and The Exploits That Make Her a Living Legend." (Say that three times fast.)

Born Helen Worley in 1886 in Louisville, Kentucky, Cromwell—the surname of one of her six husbands—lived fast, hard, always with a whiskey in hand, and she rarely said no. This approach resulted in eye-popping scenarios:

  • Accompanying an infamous bank robber to the Colorado mountains to hide for a summer while the heat died down from the last heist
  • Getting shot in the leg by an angry wife of a former indiscretion
  • Taking a cab from Milwaukee to Cincinnati wearing nothing but a fur coat
  • Stumbling into sex work after bedding a man who left her $50 in her hat following their romantic interlude
  • Working as an undercover madam for mobster Al Capone to suss out whether his regular madam was skimming cash (she was)
  • Asking Capone to accompany her to a divorce proceeding to scare her abusive, soon-to-be ex into submission (it worked)

During Prohibition, Cromwell ran a popular speakeasy and brothel in Wisconsin, drumming up business by renting a luxury convertible and driving down main street throwing hundreds of dollar bills to a rabid crowd, suggesting they come drink at her establishment. When Prohibition ended, her haunt was legitimate, now called the Sunflower Inn, and it was a melting pot for Milwaukee's hoi polloi and upper crust. Gangsters, pro baseball players, politicians, and regular Joes all mingled together. Her booming business only flourished as her foul-mouthed "Dirty Helen" persona grew. Theatrically cussing out customers was met with thunderous applause.

Cromwell was exceptionally charitable, both to women who worked in her brothel and to strangers. Sob stories from patrons about being unable to afford nearby Marquette university led to Cromwell paying their ways. "I was loaded with dough and I think I put it to good use in the early Thirties," Cromwell wrote. "I've paid many a tuition bill for boys who are now doctors and lawyers."

Great Bourbon, Greater Impact. Every D.H. Cromwell Bottle Gives Back

"Helen may have drank like a rebel, but she gave like a saint. Helen did a lot for the people of her community, so it's important for us to give back too," says English. "We're excited to partner with Refuge for Women, a charity organization that helps empower sexually exploited and trafficked women to live a life of freedom. We're donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each D.H. Cromwell bottle to this wonderful organization. We imagine Helen would've appreciated Refuge for Women's mission and accomplishments."

Operational in Texas, Nevada, Illinois, and Kentucky, Refuge for Women uses three types of residential healing programs to help women coming out of strip clubs, escorting, the pornography industry and more. Women fresh out of their situation detox and stabilize in emergency housing, before moving to long term housing and healing, then a transitional living phase where they learn job skills and prepare for a life outside of refuge. All portions of the program are free to the residents, funded by donors and grants.

"Having had similar experiences to Helen for ten years and having walked with women in the commercial sex industry for 24 years, I know first-hand that many would have left if they had the hope, support, and tools to live a life of freedom and flourishing," says Deanna Lynn, executive director of Refuge for Women Kentucky. "I'm so thankful to have graduated from Refuge for Women myself in 2012 and to have the privilege to support my sisters ready to escape and start again."

"I want to thank Old Commonwealth, for passing on Helen's legacy of generosity to women like us who are looking to beat the odds, against all odds," says Lynn. "Donations to Refuge for Women Kentucky give women, and their children, much to truly celebrate for generations to come."

COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 13, 2025  Middle West Spirits, one of North America's largest independently-owned distilleries, today announced the acquisition of Old Elk Distillery and its related assets. Known for its award-winning whiskeys, deep customer loyalty and distinctive Slow Cut® proofing process, Old Elk brings nationally recognized craftsmanship to Middle West's expanding branded portfolio.

"This is a meaningful moment for both our teams," said Ryan Lang, Founding Lead Distiller and CEO of Middle West Spirits. "Old Elk has built a respected and beloved brand with staying power, thanks to a distinct blending and innovation philosophy that complements our grain-to-glass production model. Their agility in developing award-winning blends pairs naturally with our technical approach and scale. We're laying the foundation for long-term growth with a shared focus on quality, transparency and customer relationships."

By combining Old Elk's brand momentum with Middle West's robust infrastructure, this acquisition empowers both companies to reach more consumers, drive innovation and raise the bar for craft spirits at scale.

That focus has brought us to this incredible moment," said Luis Gonzalez, CEO of Old Elk. "Our relationships have always been at the heart of what we do and have been pivotal in shaping our journey. We're wholeheartedly grateful to our extraordinary team, loyal customers and to our national distributor partner, Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, for their trust and belief in our vision. I'm extremely appreciative to Greg Metze for his mentorship, craftmanship and dedication to the team and his lasting impact and influence on the spirits industry. We are thankful for our founders Curt and Nancy Richardson for their vision in creating a world-class whiskey. Their legacy has inspired us for many years."

Founded in 2008, Middle West Spirits is deeply rooted in Ohio's grain belt and manages every step of its production—from seed selection through distilling, aging, blending and bottling. The company produces a portfolio of award-winning brands including Middle West Bourbon, Rye, Wheat Whiskey, Bourbon Cream, OYO Vodka, Vim & Petal Gin and Lux & Umbra. Having recently increased its distillation capacity, Middle West Spirits is the largest distillery in Ohio and one of the top 10 grain-to-glass whiskey and spirits producers in the U.S., producing spirits not only for its own brands but also numerous partners in the craft and global spirits industries.

"This acquisition isn't just a milestone, it's a launchpad. We're securing the future of the Old Elk legacy with dedicated production and a true home for our brand, one that fans and partners alike can rally around for years to come," adds Gonzalez. "As we grow, Middle West Spirits is doubling down on what matters most: delivering on demand, pushing innovation and building a best-in-class infrastructure that sets a new standard in the spirits industry. Lancaster Craft Spirits Distillery American Single Malt Whiskey Porter Cask Rare 47.7%-ABV 750ml.
About Lancaster Distilleries:

Artfully Distilled. Creatively Crafted. Anything But Boring.

At the heart of the Lancaster Distilleries origin story stands a collective of friends-turned-business partners that's been hard at work transforming an iconic independent theater into the multifaceted art house / music venue / farm-to-table restaurant / craft distillery that stands today.

As one of five partners at the helm of Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, Nate Boring brought both his craftsman spirit & his love for distilled spirits to the proverbial table as the team got to work establishing the legacy Lancaster theater in its new Downtown Lancaster home. Having designed & even built much of the restaurant's interior – casting glass-reinforced fiberglass to create the tiles that became the face of the bar; constructing the bar from live-edge lumber & a shuffleboard table – Boring's made his mark on virtually every fit & finish in the place.

And then there's the booze...

Since emerging on the craft distilling scene in 2018, Lancaster Distilleries' portfolio of spirits has garnered some high praise & accolades from within the industry (thanks, John Barleycorn & American Distilling Institute!) alongside countless, totally-not-biased compliments from close friends & family members (thanks, mom & dad!), beginning with its lineup of rums & followed closely by a smattering of gins, vodkas & specialty small-batch spirits. By late 2020, LD spirits were added to the shelves of select Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores throughout Lancaster County.

And in 2021, Lancaster Distilleries made history for being the first producer to sell alcohol in the nation’s oldest farmers' market — Lancaster Central Market – where you can also find a rotating hodgepodge of other house-made, libation-enhancing goodies like bitters, syrups, shrubs & mixers.

Speaking of farmers... If you haven't heard about Lancaster, Pennsylvania's storied agricultural heritage, the punch line is that there's a whole lotta fresh produce to be had here in the county. Which is why our team takes pride in featuring the bounty of our local farmers in each and every bottle of Lancaster Distilleries spirits. Heck, we even craft our own barrels from PA-grown White Oak, the likes of which help our Oaked Rum & Roaring Brook Bourbon fully actualized into the booze we knew they could be.

“AS AN ARTIST AND CRAFTSMAN, I’VE ALWAYS LOVED MAKING NEW & BEAUTIFUL THINGS FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY.

The craft of making spirits is a creative endeavor I take great pride in. I’ve sourced & distilled the best flavors into our spirits and proudly present them to you – anything but boring.”

– Nate Boring, Distiller & Artist

RD1 Spirits Opens Immersive Brand Destination Distillery in Lexington, KY

RD1 Spirits Opens Immersive Brand Destination Distillery in Lexington, KY

A New Focus on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail with Wood Finishing Exploration

LEXINGTON, Ky., May 14, 2025-- RD1 Spirits proudly announces the grand opening of its new brand destination, RD1 Distillery at The Commons, now open to the public just minutes outside downtown Lexington, Ky. One of the newest stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, this research and development distillery is designed to engage bourbon lovers and curious travelers with sensory-driven whiskey experiences and wood-finished science experiments. The $5-million, newly constructed visitors attraction is expected to welcome up to 30,000 guests annually, significantly contributing to Lexington's economic development and tourism.

"Congratulations to RD1 Spirits on today's grand opening," said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. "This is more than just a distillery. It's a prime example of the type of opportunity bourbon tourism can offer communities across the Commonwealth. This is a tremendous addition to Lexington and our state's bourbon industry, which continues to innovate and grow."

Located at The Commons, a dynamic 42-acre mixed-use development that unites life, work and play, RD1 Distillery at the Commons is 10,215 square feet, almost three times the size of its former Tasting Room and Gift Shop.

"We're incredibly proud to open the doors of our beautiful, new home and invite guests into our world of wood-finished bourbon," said Mike Tetterton, CEO of RD1 Spirits. "As we listened to our fans and their captivating interest around how we test unique woods from throughout the world, we reimagined our original distillery plans to ultimately give guests an experience like no other on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail."

A visually striking, 240-barrel rick—visible from inside and outside the building—frames the venue, while the lobby's centerpiece, a handcrafted, 10-foot-tall oak tree, ascends into a glowing circular light fixture, giving artistic nods to Lexington's four-plank horse farm fencing and bourbon's strong connection to nature.

While RD1 continues to produce its award-winning Kentucky Straight Bourbon at Western Kentucky Distilling in Beaver Dam, Ky, the new destination features an R&D distillery for ongoing experimentation. Equipment includes a 50-gallon fermenter, a custom hybrid pot still with column, and an 800-gallon pot still to potentially use in the future for larger test runs. Led by RD1's R&D Master Distiller, Jarrad Gollihue, PhD, the on-site distillery will test upwards of 50 unique wood finishes annually.

RD1 was founded in 2020 to pay tribute to Lexington's entrepreneurial bourbon history and continue to move it forward.

"The rebirth of the bourbon industry in Lexington continues with RD1 Spirits," said Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton. "In 1865, the Ashland Distillery became Central Kentucky's first federally licensed distiller, known as RD #1. Today, RD1 Spirits mixes history with new approaches."

Bourbon Experiences

RD1 Spirits offers à-la-carte tours, tastings, and experiences—which can be bundled for a deeper dive into America's Native Spirit. Before scheduled experiences begin, guests can enjoy a self-guided tour of the RD1 lobby to learn more about Lexington's first federally registered distillery, RD1's own story of innovation, and the brand's national accolades. Interactive displays share hints into RD1's bourbon production and wood finishing, and preview some of the cocktails available upstairs at the bar.

One of the most unique stops on the tour is the "RD1 Forest," an indoor experiential zone where guests walk among the trees while learning about forestry science, wood chemistry, the unique trees in RD1's portfolio, and current finishing experiments.

"Bourbon's ties to wood are undeniable," said Mark Stoops, RD1 investor and advisor, and Lexington community leader. "But, RD1 is taking nature's force to another level with barrel finishing that leaves guests with eyes wide open to what else is out there."

Upstairs, adventurous guests can thieve bourbon straight from the RD1 portfolio or experimental barrels—rotating every few months—giving repeat guests new opportunities each time to taste and/or bottle in a custom packaging to take home. Guests can also reserve a lab appointment in our VIP room with Dr. Gollihue to dissect and proof down their barrel sample and fill it into a mini barrel for additional aging at home.

"RD1 didn't just resurrect a name—they rekindled a passion for innovation, asking, 'What else can Bourbon do?'" said Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers' Association. "This stunning new distillery at The Commons answers that question. It's a place where visitors from near and far will discover the complex artistry of Kentucky Straight Bourbon, enhanced by unique wood finishes that push the boundaries of flavor."

For private groups, the upstairs speakeasy—tucked behind a hidden door showcasing a wall of "first" pioneers—offers a cozy, barrel-backed lounge and large screens perfect for game day, celebrations, or exclusive tastings.

Additional highlights include:

  • Two private tasting rooms that can be combined into one, with seating for up to 36
  • A bourbon bar with seating for 26
  • A wrap-around patio with seating for up to 36, overlooking the future concert venue and greenspace of The Commons
  • A gift shop with limited releases—including RD1's 12-year, Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon, only available for purchase at RD1 Distillery at The Commons—and other unique merchandise

Development and Tourism

RD1 serves as the anchor tenant of The Commons, currently home to Battle Axes, 30 businesses, and a mile of walking trails.

"RD1 embodies the spirit of what we envisioned for The Commons—a destination where history, innovation and community come together," said Daren Turner, CEO of The Commons. "RD1's presence has already resulted in tremendous interest from boutique retail, restaurants, and short-term guest stay accommodations. This is Lexington's hottest development, and Kentucky Bourbon is at the heart of it all."

"We are so excited for the opening of this new bourbon experience by RD1 Spirits," said Commerce Lexington President and CEO, Bob Quick. "Bourbon is not only one of our signature economic industries here in Kentucky and Greater Lexington, but it's also seen a significant impact on tourism across the state through the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, attracting nearly three million people last year."

Welcoming Guests

The distillery's official debut follows a May 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony and VIP event to celebrate this milestone for RD1, Lexington, and the Commonwealth.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of RD1 at The Commons," said Mary Quinn Ramer, President of VisitLEX. "This multifaceted stop along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail will give visitors a reason to come back again and again."

The vision for RD1 Distillery at The Commons was brought to life through the creative talents of Joia Miller Design, Dimensional Innovations (experiential exhibit design), Poke The Bear (video), Brackish Creative (graphic design), and Nimlok (displays). The project was made possible through collaboration with Turner Construction and numerous local sub-contractors, and legal support from McBrayer PLLC out of central Kentucky.

RD1 Distillery at The Commons is now open Monday–Thursday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Friday–Saturday: 11 a.m.– 7 p.m.; and Sunday: 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. The new brand destination is located at 113 Turner Commons Way, Suite 110, Lexington, Ky 40508, off Main Street. Online reservations are recommended, although walk-ins are accepted as scheduling permits. A tour is not required to enjoy the RD1 bourbon bar, which is open during the above distillery hours.

RD1 Distillery at The Commons is also available for partial or full space rentals for private events, including corporate gatherings and weddings, accommodating up to 100 guests. For more information, please contact Events@RD1spirits.com.

Taconic Distillery Founder’s Straight Rye Whiskey

Taconic Distillery Founder’s Straight Rye Whiskey

Taconic Distillery Founder’s Straight Rye Whiskey 45%-ABV 750ml.
About Taconic Distillery:

Taconic Distillery, established in 2014, is a purveyor of fine craft spirits located in the Hudson Valley of New York. We handcraft our award-winning bourbon and rye whiskies in small batches using the finest ingredients, including grains grown in New York and natural spring water from our farm.

Inspired by hunting and fishing, Taconic embraces a passion for the outdoors and that passion is imprinted on all our spirits.

All of our spirits are brilliant for simple sipping. They also make excellent traditional and signature cocktails. We are proud members of the American Distilling Institute, the American Craft Spirits Association and the New York Distillers Guild.

To preserve the complete flavor of our whiskey, we do not chill filter.

Whiskey is distilled at below 160 proof to retain more of the flavor from the grains it was made from. Those flavors are transferred through the distilling process as fatty molecules (flavor oils). Some distillers will sacrifice a certain amount of flavor for clarity at this point, and chill filter their whiskies to remove some of these fatty molecules. They get a clear whiskey, but remove some of the flavor. Taconic does not chill filter, so sometimes our whiskey may show some “cloudiness”.  This does not mean the whiskey is flawed. On the contrary, it is proof we have imparted as much flavor to the whiskey as possible.

Aging occurs in cycles. On hot summer days, the whiskey expands through the char, through the red layer, and into the well-dried but otherwise untreated wood beneath. While in the wood, the whiskey dissolves various delicious compounds. In the cool of the evening, the liquid contracts and brings all of the dissolved wood goodies out with it, where they begin to flavor the body of the whiskey.

The char layer reacts with and either traps or softens any bad congeners that remain in the spirit, taming them and rendering them either innocuous or tasty.

“Dutchess Private Reserve has a lovely coppery color to it, or maybe like a gorgeous amber maple syrup. It starts off with a wonderful baked quality like cookies in the oven, butter, butterscotch, cookie dough, honey, vanilla, and lots of spice. It got a little bit of a bite up front, but goes down incredibly smoothly without a lot of burn. And it’s definitely not as sweet as it smells. In fact, it’s a beautiful, elegant, wonderful bourbon. Fantastic! Move over everyone, the valley now has yet another superior bourbon!”

“Sawdust falls upon the crisp grains to leave no doubt of either the whiskey type or hefty oak influence; towards the background there is an old Christmas pudding soaked in brandy...”

~ Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible

“Serious depth to the tannin: red liquorice and molasses abound...Roasty and a good small grain portfolio, too. Good grief...! It is the nose in liquid form.”

~ Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible

“Well done, people of Taconic Distillery. You sure know how to make a rye whiskey!”

Windows Distillery Does It Again: Wins Gold and Two Silvers at the World's Biggest Spirits Competition

Newcomer continues to upend the whiskey world with top awards at San Francisco World Spirits Competition

SYCAMORE, Ill. , May 12, 2025 - Windows Distillery has done it again—and the spirits world is officially on notice. Following its breakthrough performance at the London Spirits Competition, the brand has now secured top honors at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the largest and most influential blind-tasting event in the world.

Windows Distillery earned:

  • Gold Medal for Batch One Straight Bourbon (Score: 92)
  • Silver Medal for Four Barrel Straight Bourbon
  • Silver Medal for Continental Vodka

In just months since its debut, Windows Distillery—a brand that was unknown a year ago—has catapulted into the ranks of the world's most celebrated spirits, winning major awards at the two most prestigious competitions in the industry.

"These awards aren't just medals," said Chris Mayer, founder of Windows Distillery. "They're a powerful confirmation that our commitment to bending and finishing spirits at the highest level is being recognized by the best in the business. To earn this kind of recognition so early in our journey reinforces what we've believed from day one: that we're crafting spirits worthy of standing out among the greats."

Now in its 25th year, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is known for setting the standard in spirits judging worldwide. With an expert panel of judges—including Master Distillers, spirits journalists, buyers, and educators—the competition evaluates thousands of entries from around the globe in a rigorous blind-tasting format that awards only the best of the best.

"We call ourselves Spirit Benders™ because we don't just distill—we elevate, enhance, and transform," said Mike Weckerly, the original Spirit Bender at Windows Distillery. "These medals tell us we're not just on the right track—we're making waves."

These awards firmly establish Windows Distillery as a formidable presence in the spirits industry, demonstrating that its bold approach to creative blending, innovative finishing, and uncompromising craftsmanship ranks alongside legacy brands.

With awards from both London and San Francisco in its very first year of production, Windows Distillery has captured the attention of the spirits world—and its momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

CHRIS STAPLETON AND BUFFALO TRACE DISTILLERY'S TRAVELLER WHISKEY BECOMES THE FIRST OFFICIAL WHISKEY OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

The multi-year partnership celebrates the shared craftsmanship, perseverance and passion of whiskey and baseball, honoring the timeless spirit of both American traditions

FRANKFORT, Ky., May 8, 2025 - Traveller Blended Whiskey, co-created by Buffalo Trace Distillery's Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley and Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and musician Chris Stapleton, formed a new multi-year agreement making Traveller the Official Whiskey of Major League Baseball (MLB).

The partnership solidifies the Most Awarded Super Premium Whiskey release of 2024 as the first whiskey brand ever designated by MLB as its Official Whiskey, and invites fans ages 21-and-older to savor the camaraderie and connection of the game with a whiskey in hand.

Chris Stapleton's Traveller Whiskey is the first whiskey brand ever designated by MLB as its Official Whiskey.

Sharing his excitement for the partnership, Chris Stapleton stated, "Whenever we're on the road and it happens to line up, we go to baseball games. It's become a bit of a tradition over the years. We love to experience all the different ballparks and enjoy the culture of whatever baseball town we happen to be in. My wife and I even went to Game Six of the World Series once on our anniversary. Needless to say, I'm thrilled Traveller Whiskey is going to be the Official Whiskey of MLB."

"Like a perfect swing or a game-changing slider, developing a great whiskey is an art form that demands passion, time and dedication to master," added Andrew Duncan, Global Brand Director for Traveller Whiskey. "Starting this summer, we're bringing that same spirit to ballparks across the country – where unforgettable moments, world-class whiskey and America's pastime come together. We're excited to introduce MLB fans to baseball's newest tradition, Traveller Whiskey."

The 360-degree marketing partnership will promote the brand across various multimedia touchpoints including game broadcasts, custom social and digital content such as MLB Power Rankings and in stores across the U.S. Traveller will also set up engaging fan activations on-site at 2025 MLB All-Star Week and the MLB Speedway Classic presented by BuildSubmarines.com. Lastly, Traveller plans to give fans 21+ the opportunity to attend these highly anticipated events via custom sweepstakes and giveaways in conjunction with MLB.

"Harlen, Chris and the Buffalo Trace team have created this standout brand in a very competitive, popular space, and we're excited to work with them," said Uzma Rawn Dowler, MLB Chief Marketing Officer & Senior Vice President, Global Corporate Partnerships. "Between record levels of MLB fan engagement, All-Star Week in Atlanta and the Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway, this is a great year for Traveller and MLB to start working together."

A first-of-its-kind collaboration of collective artistry, Traveller is proudly blended and bottled at the World's Most Award-Winning Distillery under Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley's expert supervision. More than 50 blends were tasted before Stapleton and Wheatley agreed that Blend No. 40 would become Traveller.

Bottled at 90 proof, Traveller Whiskey is characterized by notes of oak, sweet maple, tart currant and leather. Complex aromas of vanilla, aged fruit and buttery shortbread are rounded off by caramel and a touch of oak. The flavor profile also showcases a touch of sweetness, followed by spice, toasted nut and oak flavors, closing with a robust finish. Traveller is a completely unique combination of whiskeys hand-selected from The Sazerac Company's award-winning distilleries.

Traveller Whiskey is widely available at retailers, bars and restaurants nationwide at a suggested retail price of $39.99 per 750ml bottle (local taxes and fees will vary).
