Michter's Distillery to Release 2024 Legacy Series


LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 25, 2024   --- -- Just in time for America's 248th Birthday, Michter's Distillery will be releasing its Legacy Series this July. Comprised of Shenk's Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey and Bomberger's Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon, this special release is vintage-dated with the year of the bottling, in this case 2024.

Each release of Shenk's and each release of Bomberger's has differed from those of previous years. "While there is some continuity from year to year, our production team makes creative adjustments to each edition of these whiskeys," observed Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco.

In 1753, Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk founded Shenk's distillery in Pennsylvania. This distillery was later renamed Bomberger's Distillery in the 1800s before its name changed again to Michter's Distillery in the mid-20th Century. It is this heritage that the Michter's Legacy Series honors.

Michter's Master Distiller Dan McKee said, "In the 2024 Shenk's release, we used rye, malted rye, and for the first time caramel malt, which offers a nice creaminess to complement the whiskey's herbaceous qualities and notes of spice." Some of the barrels used in the production of Shenk's include oak sourced from the Vosges region of France, which is air dried and seasoned for 24 months before being toasted to Michter's exacting specifications.

Like Shenk's, the 2024 release of Bomberger's has some malted rye in its recipe. "This year's release of Shenk's and Bomberger's is a reflection of the passion the team has for making exciting whiskeys with a thoughtful touch of exploration," commented Michter's Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson. "The 2024 edition of Bomberger's continues the use of some Chinquapin (Quercus muehlenbergii) oak to accentuate the dark chocolate and stewed fruit notes in this big whiskey that are then complemented by the spice notes offering a bold, rich, balanced complexity and a long lingering warm finish for your drinking indulgence." This year's Chinquapin oak was air dried and seasoned outdoors for 36 months before toasting and charring.

Shenk's is 91.2 proof (45.6% ABV) and has a U.S. suggested retail price of $110. Bomberger's is 108 proof (54% ABV) and has a U.S. suggested retail price of $120.

1.5 oz Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon
2 oz iced tea
0.75 oz Ooni & Four Roses Bourbon Barrel Aged Honey
0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
3-4 pineapple pieces
Garnish: pineapple

DIRECTIONS: Muddle pineapple in a mixing tin then combine all ingredients (except iced tea) in the mixing tin. Add ice. Shake for fifteen seconds or until the cocktail is properly diluted and well chilled. Add iced tea. Double strain into a glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge.

"This summer while we are closed for re-grassing portions of the golf course, we are excited to bring the magic of Sweetens Cove on the road," says course designer, architect, and co-owner Rob Collins, who opened Sweetens Cove Golf Club in 2014.

Known as one of the toughest tee times to secure in public golf, Sweetens Cove typically sells out of passes for the year not long after they become available. A longstanding tradition at the course is to take a shot of bourbon on the first tee which inspired the ownership team, including celebrities such as Peyton Manning and Andy Roddick, to found Sweetens Cove Spirits Company and launch an award-winning bourbon in 2020.

According to Adamski, Sweetens Cove has welcomed thousands of golfers from around the world and has become a place of pilgrimage, fun and friendship.

"We're going to do a one-day takeover at these courses and run them like we run Sweetens Cove—that means unlimited loops to multiple pins, event swag, food, bourbon and a very memorable experience," says Adamski.

The International Whisky Competition, held annually, is widely recognized as one of the most influential whisky awards globally. A Tale of Two Bourbons

Many folks mistakenly believe that bourbon can only be made in Kentucky, but the truth is, bourbon can be crafted anywhere in the U.S.  What makes an American whiskey a true bourbon is a special set of rules: it has to be made with at least 51% corn, distilled at a certain proof, and aged in new oak barrels.

Kentucky and Tennessee both have storied histories of producing excellent bourbon, with differences in water and climate producing distinct flavors. Kentucky's limestone water and Tennessee's pure spring water are both famous for helping yeast thrive during fermentation. Differences in flavor profile come from the type and provenance of the grains used, the type of yeast used, water quality, the proof at distillation and the particular wood used to make oak barrel. Even the location of the barrel warehouse, the circulation of air between the barrels being stored and where the barrels are within the warehouse (high up or near the bottom) all conspire to give impart flavor differences.
