Kavalan Launches Limited Edition 'Artist Series'
TAIPEI, Nov. 25, 2020 Kavalan, the pioneering force behind Taiwanese whisky, has launched its "Kavalan Artists Series," a new range of expressions that aims to highlight the fine art of whisky.
The first edition introduces four bottles in collaboration with Master Artist Paul Chiang, who draws creative energy from his homeland, and whose work was selected for interpreting classical music and the natural beauty of Taiwan.
The single-cask, cask-strength whiskies -- Puncheon, Virgin Oak, French Wine Cask, and Peated Malt -- are inspired by the four elements, Ocean, Air, Sunlight, and Mother Earth, each of which plays an essential role in the creation of Kavalan whisky. The distillery will release a total of 198 collector sets, which come with four 700ml bottlings. In addition each set includes a uniquely numbered and signed edition of one of two silkscreen prints by Paul Chiang titled, "Pisilian" or "Mountain Range of Taiwan." Meanwhile, a total of 4,000 individual bottles will be released, bottled at 1,000ml for individual purchase.
Peated Malt is Kavalan's second Shave, Toast, and Rechar (STR) whisky and follows on from the WWA 'World's Best Single Malt' winner, the *Solist Vinho Barrique.
Paul Chiang has been internationally acclaimed across Europe, the US, and Taiwan, embodying an uncompromising pursuit of 'the ideal' that attracted the attention of the Kavalan family.
Kavalan CEO Mr YT Lee said each painting was a labour of love.
"Art, like whisky, has the power to stir deep emotion. But this takes decades of hard work and commitment to mastering your craft," Mr Lee said.
"Take 'Puncheon', which depicts the sea, sky, and stars. Paul painted this work after returning to Taiwan after 30 years, settling on the coast in Taitung. You can feel the euphoria of that time and the beauty of rediscovery."
"We want to bring together great art and our rarest whisky to connoisseurs an expression of the finest artistry. We are honoured to be collaborating with Paul on the inaugural edition."
The Whiskies:
PUNCHEON 50-63% ABV
Painting – Pisilian (Morning Stars over the Coast)
The indigenous name, Pisilian, refers to a stretch of Taiwan's eastern coastline, connecting Kavalan's home in Yilan County with Taitung County where Paul Chiang is based. Kavalan's story, or dream, starts in the Ocean under a starry sky. From here, moisture rises and eventually condenses above Snow Mountain, creating Kavalan's legendary water source.
Product Description
Aged in Puncheon casks, and as rare as deep ocean treasure, this whisky is effortlessly smooth in texture with an ocean of complexity, and waves of tantalising flavour.
Nose:
Roasted biscotti bathed in crème de pêches, smooth vanilla, sweet white peach, and maple syrup.
Palate:
Waves of sweet toffee, white-fleshed nectarine, and tropical fruits and hints of rich nuttiness.
VIRGIN OAK 50-63% ABV
Painting – On Wings of Song
Named after a Felix Mendelssohn piano piece, Paul Chiang's circular brushstrokes imagine effervescent air particles and the beating of wings, creating the sensation of air in motion. The Kavalan dream takes flight in Air, and this painting can be seen as an artistic rendition of whisky's maturation process.
Product Description
Virgin oak barrels form the body of this Kavalan symphony in which sweet notes of tropical fruits and honey are generously infused.
Nose:
Smoked plum, purple grape, buttery vanilla, rich beeswax, wafts of crisp floral notes, apricot, and peach.
Palate:
Bursts of spicy oak, sweet honey, autumn pear and chestnuts, ripened guava, and cinnamon spice.
FRENCH WINE CASK 50-63% ABV
Painting – Meditation on Eternity
The golden Sunlight in this piece represent sparks of hope, lighting the path toward the Kavalan dream. The fiery red denotes both the intensity of purpose and the heat of the sun, the same life-giving warmth that uniquely enhances Kavalan's ageing.
Product Description
Matured in red wine barrels from the finest wineries in Bordeaux, France, this opulent whisky has a rich aroma with full-bodied texture. Soft tannins and a warming mouthfeel help bring out the rich complexity of flavours.
Nose:
Vibrant berry and blackcurrant, sweet pepper, apple, caramel, and ripened fruit.
Palate:
Tropical fruit, wild berries, dried fruits, soft tannins, and subtle spice.
PEATED MALT 50-63% ABV
Painting – Jinzun / Summer
The final piece in the set is both homecoming and rebirth. The green, yellow, and blue represent Taiwan's East Coast's lushness and the vibrant flavours and scents of Kavalan whisky. This Mother Earth bears the fruits of labour for both Kavalan and Mr Chiang and the seeds for new growth. The Kavalan dream becomes a reality.
Product Description
Using malt smoked with deep-mined peat, Kavalan's signature tropical fruits are infused with the peated smokiness in this one-of-a-kind drop. An earthy depth and complexity is exquisitely layered with fruit and accentuated by Kavalan's unique Shave, Toast, and Rechar (STR) technique on the barrels, for a unique maturation.
Nose:
Layers of honeycomb, smooth toffee, and sweet coconut
Palate:
Buttered toffee and peaty and earthy notes on a bed of red pepper, generous spice, and rich longan.
The Kavalan Artist Series is now on sale across Taiwan. Individual bottles will be priced at an RRP of NTD$12,000 each.
*Please note that Kavalan's award-winning "Solist" Series is sold under the name "Cask Strength" Series inside the US market only for trademark reasons.

Diageo Launches New Ten-year Sustainability Action Plan
By 2030, Diageo's 'SOCIETY 2030: SPIRIT OF PROGRESS' plan will enable the company to:
- Reach 1 billion people with messages of moderation through its brands
- Achieve Net Zero carbon emissions across direct operations
- Increase representation of leaders from ethnically diverse backgrounds to 45%
- Use 30% less water in every drink it makes
LONDON, Nov. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Diageo, maker of Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness, has announced a range of 25 bold and ambitious goals in its 'Society 2030: Spirit of Progress' plan, designed to make a positive impact on the world by 2030, in the 'Decade of Action' to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Building on a long track-record of ESG progress globally, Diageo will focus its action over the next ten years in three core areas, carefully selected to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): promoting positive drinking; championing inclusion and diversity; and pioneering grain-to-glass sustainability.
Ivan Menezes, Chief Executive, Diageo said: "As a global business, we are committed to playing our part to protect the future of our planet and to leading the way for others to follow. I am immensely proud of Diageo's sustainability and responsibility achievements to date, and this new, ambitious action plan will challenge us even further to deliver more over the critical decade to 2030."
Highlights from the 'SOCIETY 2030: SPIRIT OF PROGRESS' plan include:
Promoting positive drinking
- By 2030, Diageo will reach more than one billion people with messages of moderation from its brands;
- Will change the attitudes of five million drivers towards drink driving; and
- Will educate over 10 million people on the dangers of drinking underage through 'SMASHED', Diageo's award-winning alcohol education awareness programme, now operating in every continent.
Championing inclusion and diversity
- Diageo will build on its strong track record of inclusion and diversity by setting an industry-leading ambition to have 45% representation of leaders from ethnically diverse backgrounds by 2030 as well as 50% of all leaders being women; and
- Diageo will also provide skills and training to over 1.7m people to help create an inclusive and thriving hospitality sector.
Ivan Menezes continued: "By setting both gender and ethnicity goals for the business to achieve by 2030, I believe we can truly break down barriers and help shape a more diverse and successful long-term business and society."
Pioneering grain-to-glass sustainability
- Diageo has committed to working towards a low-carbon future, harnessing 100% renewable energy to achieve net zero carbon emissions across direct operations and working with suppliers to reduce indirect carbon emissions by 50%; and
- As the first step in its net zero ambition, Diageo's prestigious Scottish distilleries of Oban and Royal Lochnagar will both become carbon neutral by the end of 2020 and Diageo will aim to achieve net zero in India by 2025; and
- By 2030 Diageo will ensure that every drink it produces will take 30% less water to make than it does today and will achieve a net positive water impact in our key water stressed basins and communities; and
- It will also deliver over 150 community water projects across the world, including providing access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene; and
- Diageo will support over 150,000 smallholder farmers with farming techniques to regenerate the land and build biodiversity; and
- By 2030 ensure that the business is using 100% recycled content in plastic packaging and that 100% of Diageo's packaging will be widely recyclable.
Today also sees the launch of Diageo's Sustainable Solutions, a global platform that will provide non-equity funding to start-up and technology companies in order to help Diageo continue to embed sustainability in its supply chain and brands. Designed to support small companies and entrepreneurs develop and commercialise their innovations, Diageo will share global resources and experience to unlock future potential for both partners.
Ewan Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer and President, Diageo Supply & Procurement, said: "It is vital that we act now if we want to maintain the wonderful world we all live in. I'm proud that we have already halved our own carbon footprint and that we are going to push ourselves further by becoming carbon neutral by 2030. It feels fitting that we are leading the way with Oban and Royal Lochnagar distilleries, which will both be carbon neutral by the end of the year."

Matthew McConaughey And Wild Turkey® Honor Local Legends Through Annual "With Thanks" Partnership
McConaughey Surprises Everyday Heroes to Thank and Reward Them for Their Service During COVID-19 Pandemic
LAWRENCEBURG, Ky., Nov. 16, 2020 - As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of our country, everyday heroes stepped up in a significant way to support family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. These "Local Legends" have provided unity, comfort, nourishment and relief during these unprecedented health and economic challenges. Today, Matthew McConaughey and Wild Turkey® give thanks and celebrate four selfless individuals from Austin, Chicago, Dallas, and New Orleans who've demonstrated unwavering conviction in serving their communities.
These small but profound heroic acts were recognized, as part of the Bourbon brand's "With Thanks" annual global give back campaign. Wild Turkey Creative Director McConaughey surprised these "Local Legends" with a virtual chat and rewarded them with a personalized token of appreciation to thank them for their efforts. Today, Wild Turkey is releasing all four videos chronicling the surprises on their Instagram page HERE.
McConaughey spoke personally with each "Local Legend" to learn about their work during the pandemic, including: Austin singer/songwriter Nakia Reynoso, who helped pass the Austin Music Disaster Relief Fund to support local musicians; Chicago activist Tanya Lozano who is providing free COVID-19 testing, grocery deliveries and personal protective items to underserved communities in her area; Dallas nonprofit founder Shawana Carter who is providing families in need with emergency diapers, wipes, food and clothing; and New Orleans dad and artist Devin De Wulf who is collaborating with locally-owned restaurants and farmers markets to both hire and feed New Orleans artists and musicians. McConaughey and Wild Turkey worked with the Legend's families, friends, and colleagues to reward each local hero with a personalized token of appreciation and contribution to their charity based on individual needs.
"The pandemic has affected all of us, so it felt more important than ever to recognize the unsung heroes who have consistently and steadfastly supported their neighbors and their communities," said Wild Turkey Creative Director Matthew McConaughey.
"It's often during the most challenging times that you see extraordinary acts of kindness and a commitment to help those in need," said Wild Turkey Master Distiller Eddie Russell. "Wild Turkey was founded on community, and we're grateful to work with Matthew to celebrate and lift up those who go above and beyond for their hometowns. These four Local Legends made an impact when it mattered the most and we're thrilled to honor them."
Last year, McConaughey and Wild Turkey thanked first responders who were critical in the rescue and relief efforts around the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, delivering 800 turkey dinners to firehouses in partnership with nonprofit Operation BBQ Relief. In 2018, they thanked first responders in Houston following Hurricane Harvey, surprising them with turkey dinners. And in 2017, McConaughey visited Wild Turkey's hometown of Lawrenceburg, KY to deliver more than 4,500 frozen turkeys to residents, including 500 turkeys to the local food bank.
McConaughey has been the Creative Director for Wild Turkey since 2016. The relationship began upon the actor's inaugural visit to the iconic Kentucky distillery, where he was introduced to the Russells – the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame® father and son Master Distiller team who have 101 years of Bourbon industry experience collectively. McConaughey had an immediate connection with the Russells when he discovered Wild Turkey's devotion to distilling Bourbon the right, unapologetic way. In 2018, McConaughey unveiled his own Bourbon: Wild Turkey Longbranch®, a rare small-batch Kentucky straight bourbon refined with Texas Mesquite. Most recently, he directed Longbranch's first creative campaign entitled "Wonder What If."
About Wild Turkey Bourbon
The distillery for Wild Turkey Bourbon is located in Kentucky, situated on a deep limestone shelf on the Kentucky River. The shelf acts as a natural filter and provides the distillery with crystal clear water, vital to making such a high-quality product. Wild Turkey features the legendary father and son Master Distilling team of Jimmy and Eddie Russell, who have more than 100 years of collective experience working at the Wild Turkey distillery.
The famous Wild Turkey brand name first came about back in 1940 when distillery executive Thomas McCarthy took a few warehouse samples on a Wild Turkey hunting trip with a group of friends. The following year, his friends asked him for "some of that Wild Turkey whiskey" and the brand was born.
Wild Turkey is distilled and put into new oak barrels at a much lower ABV than most bourbons. This results in a much richer flavor, as less is cooked out during the production process. Ageing in the highest quality new American oak barrels with the heaviest char available (the Number 4 "alligator" char), imparts a smooth flavor and deep amber color to the whiskey. The barrels are filled at the distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Website: wildturkeybourbon.com.

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey Honored As Wine Enthusiast's 2020 Spirit Brand Of The Year
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 12, 2020 Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the super-premium whiskey from Tennessee, is thrilled to announce today that they have been named Wine Enthusiast's Spirit Brand of the Year for the 2020 Wine Star Awards. The whiskey, which is the most-awarded American whiskey or bourbon of 2019 and 2020, is the first-ever spirit from Tennessee to receive this title.
Uncle Nearest is a company that is more than whiskey, and has continued to break barriers since its inception. Launched in 2017, the brand is the first in the spirit industry's history to commemorate an African-American, the first known African-American master distiller, Nearest Green. The company's founder and CEO Fawn Weaver is the first African-American to lead a major spirit brand, and last year, Victoria Eady Butler - Nearest Green's great-great-granddaughter - was named Uncle Nearest's Master Blender. In this role she became the first African-American female master blender of a major spirit brand.
In terms of breaking barriers, 2020 has been no different for the company, which operates with an all-minority board and executive leadership team. Uncle Nearest made headlines earlier this year when it announced the co-creation of the Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative, a first-of-its-kind effort to further diversity within the American whiskey industry. The not-for-profit initiative consists of three arms: the Nearest Green School of Distilling, the Leadership Acceleration Program (LAP) for apprenticeships, and the Business Incubation Program (BIP), focused on providing expertise and resources to Black entrepreneurs entering the spirits industry.
"In recognizing Uncle Nearest as Spirit Brand of the Year, Wine Enthusiast has reiterated to the world that our work is far more meaningful than simply selling great whiskey," said Weaver. "People are often in awe of the energy displayed by our team members in the field and wonder what is behind such passion. It's because our team knows we aren't just in the whiskey-selling business, although we do that quite well! But rather, we are in the legacy-cementing business. We're not only ensuring the legacy of Nearest Green is known by every future generation, we're also helping others create their own legacies in this business while simultaneously helping to diversify the American whiskey industry so it more closely resembles America."
This year marks the 21st anniversary of Wine Enthusiast's Annual Wine Star Awards, honoring the individuals and companies that make outstanding contributions to the wine and alcohol beverage world. The winners, plus special awards for Lifetime Achievement Award and American Wine Legend, will be announced in the magazine's Best of Year issue. Uncle Nearest was nominated for a spot on the acclaimed list by Wine Enthusiast's comprehensive media staff and full-time contributing divisions, and awarded the top honor by the magazine's Executive Publishing team based on the brand's impact in the spirits category, commercial success, company vision, and trendsetting.
"Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey has proven to be a true industry darling for more reasons than one," stated Chairman and Publisher of Wine Enthusiast, Adam Strum. "Its namesake is dedicated to Nearest Green, a formerly enslaved Black man who distilled whiskey in the 19th century. This incredible American backstory is matched only by the quality of the spirit itself, and Uncle Nearest has now become the fastest-growing independent American whiskey brand in U.S. history. It is for these reasons that we are thrilled to award Uncle Nearest the coveted Wine Star for Spirit of the Year."
Uncle Nearest will officially receive the Spirit Brand of the Year award at a virtual event scheduled for January 2021. Earlier this week, the whiskey was also honored with a coveted spot on O, The Oprah Magazine's Oprah's Favorite Things list for 2020.

Award-winning Director Anthony Wonke's New Feature Documentary on Johnnie Walker Serves up a Measure of Spirit for our Times
LONDON, Nov. 12, 2020 - Today, Discovery launches The Man Who Walked Around the World, award-winning director Anthony Wonke's new feature documentary about Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker.
The independent film, created by Something™ Originals and produced by multi-award-winning production company Partizan, tells a powerful story of positivity and resilience - exploring how, over two centuries, the brand navigated floods, flu pandemics and World Wars, while making a stand on racial and gender inequality along the way.
"This is the story of Johnnie Walker but it's more than just a story about whisky, it's about culture and the universal need to be able to look to the future with hope. That's what makes it so powerful - it's not a history lesson, it's a story for where we are today and what we need to go forward", says Wonke.
The Academy Award-nominated, Emmy and BAFTA-winning director/producer, whose previous documentary subjects include Cristiano Ronaldo, Star Wars and AP McCoy, has spent a large part of his time in lockdown uncovering previously untold stories and perspectives on how Johnnie Walker has constantly overcome adversity with optimism, to cement its place in culture as a global icon.
Among a vast roster of contributors is actor, activist and brand ambassador Sophia Bush: "People don't just want new products that impact their lives; they want brands that impact the world positively. Johnnie Walker has recognised that and continually acted on it through impactful campaigns and programs. They are prepared to tug at the arc of history and help push culture forward and I am deeply proud to have been on this journey with them in support of their gender equality efforts in particular."
Bush is joined by the likes of Wu-Tang Clan's Cappadonna, rock musician Zakk Wylde, 88rising's Sean Miyashiro, advertising legend Sir John Hegarty and many more as we see the brand's cultural impact from Myanmar to Brazil, from India to Iraq.
Discovery VP Content Sourcing and Acquisitions Myriam Lopez-Otazu said: "We're thrilled to be premiering The Man Who Walked Around the World on Discovery platforms and services this November. It's a fascinating story and, given where we are in the world right now, a really timely one."
Diageo Global Scotch Director John Williams added: "Our story is one we're immensely proud of. We stand for something in Johnnie Walker and that something is progress - we're always looking to move forward, to make the next day better than the one before. Over two centuries we've learned that progress needs resilience and optimism, those are the ideals that lie behind our Keep Walking philosophy and I can't imagine a time when that philosophy could be any more relevant."
Something™ Originals Managing Partner Andy Hewitt commented: "Imagining, filming and editing this documentary in the context of a global pandemic, with all of the tensions that this year has brought to the surface, gives this story a profound contemporary relevance that I don't think anybody could have fully appreciated when we first came up with the idea for the documentary. We couldn't be prouder of the finished product."

Jameson® Irish Whiskey Introduces Limited Run of Legendary "Whiskey Trees" for 2020 Holiday Season
World's best-selling Irish whiskey ends the year with nearly nine-foot-tall holiday trees made from its signature green bottles.
NEW YORK, Nov. 11, 2020 What a year it's been. And in 2020, the typical holiday tree just won't cut it. Which is why the world's best-selling Irish whiskey is putting its twist on an annual tradition. Introducing the legendary Jameson Whiskey Tree, standing at nearly nine feet tall and featuring a lighting system that makes the 130 – empty! – Jameson bottles light up brighter than any yule log fire.
The unique, limited-edition trees are inspired by the spirit of John Jameson who went to extraordinary lengths to share his whiskey with the world. And if there were ever a year where the holiday season needs that bold, John Jameson spirit, it's this one. So, what type of holiday tree might Jameson's founding father want us to have 240 years after introducing his smooth Irish whiskey? While we'll never know for sure, we like to think these trees will do the trick to spread extra holiday cheer and bring close friends and family together over a shared love of whiskey and unforgettable experiences.
"Place our Jameson Whiskey Tree in your window and your neighbors will be green with envy, guaranteed," said Angelica Scibilio, Brand Director of Jameson. "We understand the holidays are different this year, and we hope our legendary trees will give a few lucky consumers some extraordinary holiday memories with friends and family."
And while we can all agree this year hasn't been easy, entering for an opportunity to win one of the seven Jameson Whiskey Trees thankfully is. Jameson wants to know who is up for the challenge of replacing their typical holiday tree with the only one that makes sense for 2020. Because what backdrop could be better – or more legendary – for sharing a smooth whiskey and a much-needed laugh with quaranteams, pods and close family and friends? All whiskey lovers must do is share here why their home needs a Jameson Whiskey Tree.
The Jameson Whiskey Trees will be delivered the first week of December – typically the most popular time to purchase a holiday tree – to stay true with annual traditions, and all the bottles on each tree are empty. In addition to the tree, winners will receive a gift card to enjoy this holiday season.
Follow along at @Jameson_US and visit JamesonWhiskey.com for more on how Jameson Irish Whiskey can help you keep the holiday season feeling legendary.
TASTE RESPONSIBLY.
