First-Ever Whiskey Distillery in U.S. History to Honor an African-American Announces Grand Opening
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 27, 2019 - Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the super-premium whiskey from Tennessee and the fastest-growing independent American whiskey brand in U.S. history, has announced that Phase One of its highly anticipated Nearest Green Distillery will open on September 14, 2019 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Named after the first known African-American master distiller, and the whiskey brand's namesake, Nearest Green, the new distillery is the first in the United States to commemorate an African-American whiskey maker, exemplifying the important contributions he made to whiskey history.
Travelers visiting the Nearest Green Distillery during its Phase One opening can expect to see the first of what is to be built on the 270-acre property, with buildings and experiences continuing to open over the next few years. Once fully open with all phases built out, the Nearest Green Distillery will not only serve as a place where Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey is distilled, aged and bottled, but will pay homage to Nearest and the many other innovators and innovations from Tennessee. The distillery has turned the former site of the famous Sand Creek Farms, a Tennessee Walking Horse farm and event center, into a full-blown destination for whiskey enthusiasts, Walking Horse lovers and families.
Phase One of the Nearest Green Distillery will include:
- A Tennessee Walking Horse experience where visitors will not only learn the history of the Walking Horse, but where more than 50 championship walking horses, and horses they sire, will continue to reside at the property.
- The Welcome House, complete with a custom-made horseshoe bar where visitors will learn about and sample Uncle Nearest's award-winning whiskeys. It will be the only place in the world with tastings of all four expressions: Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey, Uncle Nearest 1884 Premium Small Batch Whiskey, Uncle Nearest 1820 Premium Single Barrel Whiskey and Nathan Green 1870 Premium Single Barrel Whiskey, an expression previously sold only in the U.K. A second-story Awards Mezzanine was built out to showcase some of the more than 50 awards the brand has already won.
- A Copper Skies Experience where guests can sit in rocking chairs under a covered patio to see the most beautiful sunset in Tennessee. Visitors can sip on Uncle Nearest cocktails from Toppy's, a connecting bar named after the CEO's own horse, while watching the colors of the sunset.
- A Full Retail Store, where visitors can purchase custom apparel, rare bottles of Uncle Nearest, and just about anything else Uncle Nearest makes.
- The Bottling House open to the public, allowing visitors to take part in labeling the whiskey sold in the retail store. All four Uncle Nearest offerings will be bottled here.
- A Hard Hat Tour, offered with every premium tasting. This experience walks visitors through the spaces under construction that will open in 2020, such as the single barrel warehouse and tasting room, as well as the Heritage Hall, an impressive collection of all things invented in Tennessee such as NASCAR, miniature golf, Moon Pies and Mountain Dew, with a special focus on Tennessee Whiskey, Walking Horses and country music.
"When I went to write the invitations for the distillery opening, tears began to stream down my face," said Fawn Weaver, co-founder and CEO of Uncle Nearest. "I'm not a person who cries often, but something about this history just chokes me up. When I wrote the opening line, 'If Nearest Green could have owned his own distillery, would he have?' I could only think of this incredible master distiller that likely never had the chance. And posthumously, we are working to ensure his name is cemented in the hearts and minds of people around the world for generations to come. The Nearest Green Distillery is his legacy and that of his descendants. Being able to bring that to life, quite frankly, still blows my mind."
To build out the Nearest Green Distillery, Weaver has brought together a team of the most reputable designers and builders in the business. The overall design and visitor experience for the Nearest Green Distillery is being overseen by Peggy Noe Stevens & Associates. Peggy Noe Stevens is the first female master bourbon taster, founder of the internationally-acclaimed Bourbon Women, co-founder of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and the woman behind some of the top distillery visitor experiences in the country. Thom Meek of GHP Environmental + Architecture and former Tennessee Walking Horse champion was brought on in 2017 to help bring this distillery vision to life and continues to serve as the architect on the project. Haynes Service Company is building out the corporate offices, Welcome House, single barrel warehouse and tasting rooms, while Lee Adcock Construction has taken lead on building the distillery, bottling house and rick houses.
Before Phase One of the Nearest Green Distillery officially opens to the public, Uncle Nearest and whiskey enthusiasts from around the country are invited for a special preview grand opening event on Thursday, September 5.

HOLLAND, Mich., Aug. 23, 2019 Coppercraft Distillery and the Detroit Lions today announced a multi-year sponsorship agreement that will feature the Holland, Michigan-based distillery's namesake and spirits at six bar locations within Ford Field, brand signage throughout the stadium and designation as an "Official Partner of the Detroit Lions."

Michter's to Release US*1 Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey for The First Time
In September 2019, Michter's Distillery will release its US*1 Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey for sale to U.S. and export markets. While Michter's has released US*1 Toasted Barrel Bourbon and US*1 Toasted Barrel Strength Rye in the past, this will mark the first ever release of Michter's US*1 Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey.
When Michter's US*1 Sour Mash was selected by The Whisky Exchange as "Whisky of the Year" for 2019, it marked the first time that any whiskey from the United States had ever achieved this honor. This award winning whiskey is at the heart of Michter's US*1 Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey. To make this special Toasted release, Michter's starts with fully matured barrels of its US*1 Sour Mash Whiskey and transfers the whiskey into specially toasted barrels for additional aging. "We've been very happy with how our Toasted Barrel Bourbon and Toasted Barrel Strength Rye releases have come out, and we discovered that our Sour Mash Whiskey is also wonderful for toasted barrel finishing," commented Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco.
With Master Distiller Dan McKee and Michter's Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson leading the charge, Michter's continues to conduct research into whiskey making. According to Wilson, significant consideration went into the type of toast that was best for finishing the US*1 Sour Mash Whiskey. "The toast profile used to finish our Toasted Barrel Sour Mash differs from both the toast profile used for our Toasted Bourbon and the toast profile used for our Toasted Barrel Strength Rye." She added, "A milder toast was chosen to enhance the toffee character of the US*1 Sour Mash and provide a hint of campfire on the finish. After evaluating different degrees of toasting, we selected a level that would provide the toasty profile people enjoy while complementing the elegance of the sour mash whiskey."
Michter's US*1 Toasted Barrel Sour Mash Whiskey is 86 proof and will sell in the U.S. for a suggested retail price of $60 per 750ml bottle.
Beyond its main distillery in the Shively section of Louisville, Michter's operations extend to two other sites in Kentucky. In Springfield, Michter's is farming estate grown grain on its 145-acre property, while in downtown Louisville, Michter's has its second distillery in the historic Fort Nelson building, which opened to the public in February of this year. Only 330 bottles have been released worldwide as a limited edition - The John Walker, Last Cask.
This exquisite whisky is presented in a hand-blown Baccarat crystal decanter, with a bespoke design by Hand Engraver of Glass to Her Majesty the Queen, Philip Lawson Johnston. Every beautifully hand-drawn image decorating the bottles is unique, with no two engravings the same - making this a truly unique offering.
For over a decade, The John Walker has been crafted with some of the finest and most valuable casks of whisky from the unparalleled Johnnie Walker reserves. These whiskies are hand-selected from just nine distilleries that were in existence during the lifetime of Johnnie Walker founder John Walker (1805 - 1857). The whiskies are then matured with a special triple maturation technique, which includes a final marrying in a bespoke cask made from 100 year old oak staves.
In the expert view of Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge, this special cask, essential to balancing the flavours of The John Walker, will soon no longer bring the balance and depth of character that is so important for this elegant whisky. He has therefore decided to withdraw it from use, meaning only one final cask of The John Walker will ever be released.
Dr Jim Beveridge, recognised this year with the awarding of an OBE for services to the Scotch whisky industry by Her Majesty the Queen, said: "It has been a privilege to work with such rare and valuable whiskies to create the balance and depth found in The John Walker, and this beautiful new presentation is a fittingly elegant swansong for a superb Scotch."
The John Walker is intricately crafted using six exceptional single malt whiskies and three extremely rare grain whiskies that are expertly combined to ensure exceptional depth of flavour.
The process begins with a long, first maturation in individual casks allowing the specific flavours unique to each distillery to develop. A second maturation step then brings the single malts and grains together in two separate vattings, before the final marrying step.
For the first time Jim and his small team of expert whisky makers reveal the remarkable whiskies that are used to craft this elegant Scotch:
"We combine extremely rare grain expressions from Cambus, Port Dundas and Cameronbridge, which creates delicate flavours including notes of honey sweetness, subtle spice and soft fruit character.
"A vatting of exceptional single malt whiskies offers deeper, more robust aromas of dried fruits, with waves of citrus fruits unfolding from the distilleries of Glen Albyn, Cardhu, Mortlach, Clynelish and Dailuaine before culminating in the unmistakably warm and peppery smokiness of Talisker," says Jim.

Today, Eddie celebrates Wild Turkey's legacy as a leading rye whiskey distiller with his latest expression – Master's Keep Cornerstone Rye, the fourth release in the award-winning Master's Keep series. For decades, rye has served as a key pillar of whiskey production on Wild Turkey Hill. Jack Daniel's And The Shoe Surgeon Team Up To Create Newest Jack-Inspired Sneaker
LYNCHBURG, Tenn., July 23, 2019 -- Jack Daniel's and custom sneaker designer Dominic "The Shoe Surgeon" Chambrone continue to shakeup the sneaker and fashion worlds, with the unveiling of seven new Jack Daniel's inspired sneaker prototypes at ComplexCon weekend in Chicago. The announcement comes off of the heels of the massive success from the February 2018 collaboration at NBA All-Star Weekend.
The Shoe Surgeon team traveled to Lynchburg, TN, home of Jack Daniel's, to go behind the scenes and get fully immersed and inspired by the process that makes Jack Daniel's so unique. The seven shoe concepts, which include a mix of various styles of basketball sneakers, were each inspired by an element that makes Jack Daniel's the iconic global brand it is, including: Grain, Cave Springs, The Distillery, Charcoal, The Barrel, Honey and the Jack Daniel's Iconic Bottle.
"Craftsmanship is the ultimate common detonator between what I do and those who make Jack Daniel's," said Chambrone. "We have a mutual respect and care for the process and the end product is highlighted through every last detail."
Consumers will have the opportunity to determine the final Jack Daniel's sneaker design by online voting. A limited number of sneakers will be produced and 10 lucky voters will win a pair. Voting will be open to the general public at the end of August on complex.com.

The Glenlivet 14 Year Old sees The Glenlivet's iconic style of citrus and floral notes and creamy smoothness complemented by the sumptuous influence of select ex-Cognac casks, which include moist raisins, chocolate and licorice, to deliver a deep and intense experience. The new liquid is the latest step in the distillery's quest to inspire and open up to a new generation of whisky drinkers through bold and unconventional flavor combinations and finishing techniques.
