About J Mattingly 1845:

J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery is a bourbon distillery based in Frankfort, Kentucky, that specializes in unique blending experiences and innovative finishing techniques.

History and Legacy

  • The 1845 Connection: The year 1845 refers to the date John Graves Mattingly opened his first distillery in Kentucky, Registered Distillery #2, which historians believe may have been the first registered distillery in the state.
  • Innovation: John Graves Mattingly is credited with perfecting the continuous-flow column still, a technology that revolutionized 19th-century bourbon production by allowing for more efficient, high-volume distilling.
  • Modern Founding: The current brand was established in 2010 by Jeff Mattingly (a sixth-generation descendant) as "Bourbon 30" in Georgetown, KY. In 2023, it rebranded to J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery and relocated to its current 23,000-square-foot facility in Frankfort.

Key Products and Techniques

  • Double-Staving™: This is the distillery's signature process, which involves adding extra charred oak staves to the whiskey during maturation. This increases surface area contact, imparting deep flavors and a darker color that makes younger whiskey taste significantly older.
  • Flagship Release: In late 2024, they released their first flagship offering, the Small Batch Classic Bourbon, a 6.5-year-old blend bottled at 119 proof.
  • Custom Blending: A major draw for visitors is the "Build-a-Bottle" experience, where guests can thief (extract) bourbon directly from various barrels to create their own custom blend, choose their label, and hand-dip it in wax.

Distillery Operations & Ownership

  • Recent Sale: In July 2025, founder Jeff Mattingly sold his interest in the distillery to Gold Corn & Co., led by Andrew Varga. Despite the sale, Jeff’s son Cameron Mattingly remains as Vice President of Production to oversee the bourbon-making process.
  • Philanthropy: The distillery is well-known for its military and veteran support, regularly releasing commemorative bottles (e.g., Mogadishu Mile, Navy SEAL Foundation) where a portion of proceeds is donated to organizations like Kentucky Wounded Heroes.
  • Visiting: Located at 20 Reilly Road in Frankfort, just across from Buffalo Trace Distillery, it offers tours and tastings Monday through Saturday. You can book experiences on their official website.
