New St. Louis Based Whiskey Brand, Defiance, Wins Bronze in San Francisco World Spirits Competition

imageSAINT LOUIS, MO - March 30, 2015 -

How do you create a new, standout whiskey when giants like Jim Beam and Makers Mark still prevail? Take time in production, market it to a new target audience and put a great story behind the brand name. St. Louis' Defiance Whiskey is doing just that, and catching the attention of some of the country's top competitions. The brand was just awarded a bronze medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, recently won a silver medal at the American Craft Spirits Association event in Austin, Texas, and continues to make waves in the bourbon world.

Founder Daniel Fort and his father Garth Fort have developed this 90-proof high rye bourbon that marries the best of old and new. The whiskey is produced with the latest in distillation technology and equipment before being traditionally aged in big Missouri white oak barrels, and then painstakingly finished in small batches. The result is a whiskey that has intriguingly complex rye notes on the front end and a smooth, almost sweet finish that's very approachable.

The name "Defiance" said everything about the Forts' goals. When they started developing the bourbon four years ago, they wanted it to represent a defiant attitude and passion. “We don’t want to be just another Southern-branded, traditional whiskey,” Daniel Fort says. He said they were looking to create a new, broader audience for bourbon...not just the 50-plus male demographic of yesterday, but also millennials, women and beyond.

The name Defiance is also a tribute to Daniel's great aunt, Cornelia, a World War II female pilot. After a day of piloting a World War II fighter plane, Cornelia was known to enjoy nothing more than the company of good friends and whiskey, often a scotch and soda. Cornelia was the embodiment of defiance in her day. Her story includes an encounter with the Japanese air fleet during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and sadly ends with the ultimate sacrifice as she became the first female pilot in American history to die on active duty. “Cornelia truly embodied the spirit of Defiance Whiskey because she trained hard and followed her passion rather than the crowd.” explains Daniel.

Bacardi Acquires ANGEL’S ENVY Bourbon

imageHAMILTON, Bermuda-Family-owned Bacardi Limited, the largest privately held spirits company in the world, has expanded its portfolio of super-premium spirits with the acquisition of Louisville-based Angel’s Share Brands, its subsidiary, Louisville Distilling Co., and its ANGEL’S ENVY™ brand. This deal marks the Company’s entry into the bourbon category of the North American whiskey sector.

“We have a clear strategy aligned to meet consumer needs in premium spirits and are building an even stronger portfolio through innovation and acquisition. The purchase of Angel’s Share Brands and the ANGEL’S ENVY portfolio further reinforces our commitment to growing the super-premium spirits sector,” said Bacardi Limited CEO Mike Dolan.

ANGEL’S ENVY™ Port Finished Bourbon, the flagship brand, is one of the top ten fastest growing super-premium bourbons in the United States. The American straight category as a whole has experienced a resurgence in the past five years with a nearly five percent growth rate while the super-premium American straight segment has grown nearly 10 percent during the same time.

“Bacardi has a long history of successful acquisitions of cutting-edge brands. Bacardi looks for the gems of innovation in the spirits world to complement our premium and super-premium brands, and ANGEL’S ENVY is a natural fit for our portfolio. We are thrilled to add ANGEL’S ENVY, one of the most exciting brands in the North American whiskey category today, to our highly focused portfolio of iconic brands,” said Barry Kabalkin, Vice Chairman of Bacardi Limited.

ANGEL’S ENVY will continue as a standalone operation, meaning the business structure, employee base, production, distribution, commercial and marketing activities will remain unchanged. ANGEL’S ENVY’s new distillery and brand experience center in downtown Louisville is planned for a 2016 opening and will showcase the great tradition of Kentucky bourbon-making.

ANGEL’S ENVY was created by the late Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson, one of the original pioneers of the premium bourbon and whiskey categories in the U.S. and an inaugural member of the Bourbon Hall of Fame. The brand is hand-blended in small batches of 8 to 12 barrels. Each batch, or “expression,” is allowed to develop naturally, creating nuances in the bourbon from year-to-year.

“ANGEL’S ENVY, like Bacardi, was founded as a family-owned business driven by an entrepreneurial spirit. The secrets to crafting ANGEL’S ENVY have been well preserved by three generations of the Henderson family. Bacardi is well recognized for showcasing the unique heritage and origin of our brands, so I’m thrilled that the Henderson family, under the stewardship of Global Brand Ambassador Wes Henderson, will continue to be directly involved with the ANGEL’S ENVY brand,” said Bacardi Limited Chairman Facundo L. Bacardi, a fifth generation Bacardi family member.

The three expressions of ANGEL’S ENVY are currently available in on- and off-premise establishments throughout the United States. The award winning flagship expression of ANGEL’S ENVY™ Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in port wine barrels earned the highest-ever rating for a bourbon from Wine Enthusiast, ANGEL’S ENVY™ Finished Rye was awarded “Four Stars” and “Highly Recommended” by Spirit Journal, and ANGEL’S ENVY™ Cask Strength was named by Spirit Journal as “Best Spirit in the World.”

Terms of the transaction, closed on March 27, were not disclosed.

Jack Daniel's Announces National Launch Of "Tennessee Fire"

imageLYNCHBURG, Tenn., March 3, 2015 The Jack Daniel Distillery is excited to announce the nationwide release of their finely crafted, red-hot cinnamon spirit, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire. Following its wildly successful limited release last year, the highly coveted 'Jack Fire' will be available in all 50 states in March 2015.

Jack Fire brings together the distinctive character of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey with a red-hot cinnamon spice liqueur. The result is a sweet, hot-cinnamon kick that complements the smooth and delicious taste of Jack Daniel's, giving a unique finish full of unmistakable character.

The brand's first flavor variation, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, exploded onto the scene in the spring of 2011 and has since become one of the most popular flavored spirits in the U.S. The brand will now offer existing fans and newly interested consumers another flavor option, continuing to build on their esteemed portfolio.

It all starts with a distinct mingling of Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey and Jack Daniel's very own cinnamon liqueur. The result: a classic spirit that delivers a smooth, delicious finish and upholds the quality taste that Jack Daniel's friends have come to expect. Jack Fire was first offered in April 2014 in three select markets Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Due to positive consumer response, the spirit was released in five more markets – Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina and Texas.

"Mr. Jack himself was a true innovator and always followed his own path," said Phil Epps, Vice President, Group Brand Director of Jack Daniel's. "We believe we have developed a product that Jack himself would be proud of and worthy of the name 'Jack Daniel's.' We hope that our many friends around the country will enjoy this new offering."

Jack Daniel's Tennessee Fire will hit shelves beginning March 3, 2015 and will be available at 70 proof. The product will be priced in line with Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey.

Follow @JackFire or visit www.JackFire.com for more information and use the hashtag #JackFire to join the conversation.
