Woodford Reserve® Bourbon Releases 2013 Kentucky Derby® Bottle

image
From Woodford Reserve:

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 27, 2013 /jm/ -- Adding to its reputation as the signature bourbon of Thoroughbred racing, Woodford Reserve®, the "Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby®" is honoring the country's favorite horse race with the release of its 2013 Kentucky Derby commemorative bottle. A product of the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, this year's limited-edition bottle features the artwork of Oregon-based painter Eric Bowman .

Bowman's picture on the bottle depicts a crisp, sunny Kentucky Derby day, with blue skies over the historic Twin Spires. A close-up of two horses are shown racing neck and neck down the track in front of the spires, kicking up dirt as they fight towards the finish line. Two jockeys in colorful silks are saddled on the horses, galloping them towards the prize. A silhouette of three horses is shown in the distant background trying to catch up to the leaders.

A neck band, featured in the same sky blue color, displays the artist's signature and seals the top of the commemorative bottle. An attached tag hangs around the bottle bearing information about the product and the artist.

" Eric Bowman 's iconic American style displays the rich detail of his subject with craft and patience," said Laura Petry , Woodford Reserve senior brand manager. "This philosophy made him the perfect selection as the Kentucky Derby 139 bottle artist."

The commemorative liter-size bottle will be available in 46 markets nationwide at a suggested retail price of $43.99.

Woodford Reserve has been the "Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby" for the past 15 years. It also sponsors a Grade I race, The Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, which runs on Kentucky Derby Day, May 4, 2013, and has become one of Thoroughbred racing's premier turf events with a $500,000 purse.

About Artist Eric Bowman:
Eric honed his craft as a commercial artist in Southern California, creating original oil paintings for high profile clients. His work has adorned the covers of numerous books, music CDs, and popular periodicals, while his fine art has garnered many awards in juried competitions, showing in some of the country's most prestigious galleries. He resides with his wife and daughter in Tigard, Oregon.

Atlanta Liquor Store Unveils the Rarest of the Scotch Whiskies--Longrow

image

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 23, 2013

On February 21st, Atlanta liquor store Capital City Package unveiled one of the rarest scotch whiskies available: Longrow. Longrow was created in 1973 at Springbank in Campletown, Scotland as a peated version of the famed Springbank. The distillery had so much success with limited bottling from 1970 to the 1980's that in 1992, it added Longrow to full-time production at Springbank.

“For anyone who knows anything about Springbank, there is no such thing as full-time anything,” says Certified Wine Specialist of Capital City Package, Larry Kantrowitz. “Springbank is very special as it is the only distillery left in Campletown. The whiskies produced at Springbank are some of the finest whiskies produced on the planet. Longrow hasn't been available for over 5 years and I am not sure when it will be available again.”

Capital City Package is currently offering the following: Longrow Peated Campeltown Single Malt for $59.99, Longrow Red 11 Year Old Cabernet Sauvignon Cask for $89.99, Longrow 14 Year Old Burgundy Cask for $119.99, Springbank 10 Year Old for $54.99, and Springbank 18 Year Old for $139.99.

Longrow Peated Campeltown Single Malt is a classic whiskey in its complexity and balance and only 6 bottles are available in the store for $59.99 each. Longrow Red 11 Year Old Cabernet Sauvignon Cask was aged for 7 years in bourbon casks then 4 years in Angove's Long Row Cabernet Sauvignon casks. This drink has light fruit tones on the nose and hints of the classic saltiness of Springbank on the palate. Capital City Package only has 6 bottles available for $89.99 each. Finally, the Longrow 14 Year Old Burgundy Cask is a rarity that can only be found at Capital City Package, each bottle valued at $119.99.

Maker’s Mark Reverses Decision To Lower Alcohol Levels

image
From AdvertisingAge:

Now, in response to the backlash, the Beam Inc.-owned brand is reversing the decision, saying in a statement released Sunday that it will keep Maker's at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof) "just like we've made it since the very beginning."

"We have heard many concerns and questions from our ambassadors and brand fans," Maker's Chief Operating Officer Rob Samuels said. "We're humbled by your overwhelming response and passion for Maker's Mark. While we thought we were doing what's right, this is your brand -- and you told us in large numbers to change our decision. You spoke. We listened. And we're sincerely sorry we let you down."

The reversal comes just a few days after news spread last week of the move to lower alcohol content to 42%. The reformulation was in response to a supply shortage caused by growing demand. The laws of supply and demand dictate that a simple price increase could've solved that problem, but the brand maintained that it didn't want to "price Maker's Mark out of reach."

The Glenrothes Distillery Announces 2013 US Vintage Maker Competition

image

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 12, 2013 /jm/ -- The Glenrothes is delighted to announce today's launch of the 2013 US Vintage Maker Competition. Following the huge success of the 2012 competition, this year's contest will result in two grand prize winners from the USA. Each grand prize winner will receive a trip for him/her and one guest to Speyside, Scotland. The Glenrothes "Vintage Makers" will spend a week mastering single malt production, culminating in the creation of a new Glenrothes Vintage.

From February 12, 2013 until April 12, 2013, entrants can submit an essay of 750 characters or less and an image response to the prompt, "Share a Vintage Moment with The Glenrothes." Winning entries will be selected based on the best representation of how The Glenrothes Distillery defines a Vintage Moment: A perfect combination of time, place, people and/or occasion when everything comes together to create a moment that will stay in the memory forever.

Grand prize winners will travel to The Glenrothes this summer and be hosted by Ronnie Cox , Keeper of the Quaich and The Glenrothes Brand Heritage Director. Upon arriving, they will learn the time-honored art of whisky making and skills that have been passed down from generation to generation. The winners will spend time working at each stage of the process: testing the purity of the water source at the distillery's two springs; milling the malt to achieve the golden proportions of husk, grits and flour; mashing to ensure maximum extraction of sugars in the wort; adding yeast to the washbacks and overseeing fermentation; and slowly and carefully distilling new make spirit in our tall copper pot stills.

The "Vintage Makers" will nose single malt from maturing casks to assess whether the contents are true of all The Glenrothes whiskies and exceptional in quality and maturity; only the top 3% of the distillery's output is bottled as The Glenrothes Speyside Single Malt Whisky. Finally, the "Vintage Makers" will have the opportunity to create a new Vintage of The Glenrothes, to be released when it reaches the peak of maturity. As an added bonus each of the lucky guests will produce their own selection of The Glenrothes – labeled with their own hand-written tasting notes.

When their work is done, our Vintage Makers will enjoy the simple pleasures that Speyside has to offer; a spot of fishing, dining in the local Highland restaurants or perhaps a picnic in the hills surrounding the distillery. The "Vintage Makers" will stay in Rothes House, a private home belonging to the family that owns The Glenrothes.

The Glenrothes is now available throughout the U.S. through Anchor Distilling. For more information on The Glenrothes or the 2013 US Vintage Maker Competition, please visit www.theglenrothes.com.
